Hasan, please give me your take; American partisanship seems to be prioritized over the actual policies and legitimate arguments in our discourse, so could we argue that the American dialogue itself has been radicalized?

Let’s just appreciate that when it comes to guns and gun violence we need to look at the problems those people are facing.
This logic is never to be utilized in the case of black and brown communities.

Any chronic pain patient who had or still has prescription medication is tracked more than most criminals. There are two electronic tracking systems we are in. We have to sign contracts and get urine screens/pill counts regularly and also on demand. You can be dismissed from care without violating any rules without recourse leaving millions without treatment of any kind from any doctor. Now even hospitals are refusing to use opioid medication for surgery during and after, let that sink in, refusing to treat the pain of terminally ill patients.

I think Jon is really good at arguing because he doesn't get distracted, and he doesn't feel like he needs to state his own opinions for the record - he keeps the focus on the best, clearest argument he can make, and doesn't allow the guy he's debating to weasel out of the conclusion. There are SO many of these "professional" debater types who let their opponent completely get away with changing the subject or gets wound up having to re-re-re-re-state their own views because they're desperate to not seem insufficiently leftist or too leftist. Focus on the goddamned argument your opponent is making, because you KNOW it's BS and will fall apart.

So in family court the judge refused to honor that covid was a good reason to keep my daughter out of school in 2020 when legally she was only required to be there the last 6 weeks. We had a super high risk grandbaby as well. My half brother's father worked as a bailiff in that courthouse for over 30 years. He was on the sheriff's softball team, and was MUCH loved and respected. he died of covid. The judge knew him well. Didn't say so. The judge couldn't care less. He held it against me anyway. No CPS or anything mind you. Just my ex getting out of jail for the umpteenth time wanting more visitation. Then there was the moment I went into the sheriff's department for being served for that hearing. That sheriff told me yeah. We're not doing masks anymore. Was real excited. Stores were still doing it mind you. All other gov was mainly by zoom. There were still about 700 deaths a day in our state and people were just starting vacation. Schools still had them... I asked if he knew Butch. He was like oh! Yeah! Really great guy!! Said who my half brother was. He said he knew my-half brother too, who also played on the softball team. He said he was so sorry for his loss. He said he felt terrible for Butch's wife as well. Said I didn't know her well. I said you know how he died right? He said yeah. He was somber, and congenial after. It's crazy. Even when they see it, it's somehow a statistic! Waukesha, WiI

@@JamieDoe472 I suppose it can all be chalked up to the "it could never happen to me" mindset, or optimism bias. People see statistics and just never think about themselves being a part of that statistic because they somehow think they're special. It sounds like narcissism, but it's really just human nature. Unfortunately, I was also a victim of this kind of mindset. Even though I tried following all the regulations when it came to COVID, I still got lazy sometimes thinking that "oh I've gotten this far, there's no way I'll get infected." So, I would just let my mask down to breath a little fresh air every now and then, and it wound up with me getting COVID not once, but TWICE. I guess it was unavoidable the second time though since I at least think I took all of the necessary precautions. Then my dad also happened to get it from me. Luckily, neither of us were at risk of serious effects since we're both healthy, active individuals.

Because nobody is ready to have that conversation. It's easier to just blame the individual and their "lack of self-control."
My favorite argument to have with more liberal-minded older folks is about the difference between a dependent and an addict being a permission slip.
We had a bunch of people... remove themselves from the game... after a pain doctor got "made an example of" by Mercy and they just got cut off from their scripts. Some tried to cope, some turned to the streets, and one guy went base-jumping without a chute over a bridge.
I know long-term patients who have been on the same dose for 20 years and never stepped out of line once being messed with on their scripts. Actively hurting their quality of life.
As far as I'm concerned, the government can back itself all the way outside of a Doctor's Office.

    • @corneliahanimann2173
      @corneliahanimann2173 2 месяца назад +21

I'm Swiss, and I recently watched a video that explained that the basis for the american law is actually mimicking our law.
That is, Switzerland is known for being neutral. Military service is mandatory for men, which means they all get an AK-47 at home once they have done military training. This is not only to defend ourselves against other countries, but also to protect the nation if the government turned on us.
We have a very small active army, but the resting army is almost as big as the resting army in Germany, and we are as a country only a fraction of the size Germany is.
The point of this was to effectively give your population the ability to defend yourself against invasion, but you only join the military at age 18, and being able to shoot at an object vs. having training to systemically clean a house are two different things. So I don't think american citizens would probably not do well if the government turned on them because they don't have military training and the military in the US is strong. You also are not under the threat to be invaded whereas Switzerland has 4 surrounding countries.
What I am saying is, that the laws we made make sense for us. I we would now get to a timeline where this law was more correlated with the cause of death and not with educating average citizens about how to react when war breaks out, then we would need to change it. Our laws already change regularly, they have to, especially with a topic as dangerous as guns. Nowhere in our thinking process about why everyone has a weapon laying around in the living room is at all related to an entitlement to guns, guns are regulated, but everyone has them.

They just keep talking in circles. Jon does an excellent job, but a good analogy to illustrate the Republican mindset is this. A village is surrounded by a mob of lions. Every now an then, a lone lion or a pair of lions will wander in and attack the village. Their thought isn't to build a better wall around the village or thin out the lions. No, their solution to the problem is for everyone in the village to grow claws and fangs so that they are on equal footing with the lions. This in their head means that everyone is safer because now they can fight back. The problem with their solution is that even though the "villagers" are armed like the lions, the villagers don't have the mindset of a lion, so they can't really fight the lions on the same level. They can't compete with the instincts of a lion. Now a good anecdote proving what I'm saying here is the Airmen that was killed in Florida after he answered the door with a gun in his hand. The cop saw a gun and shot the man even though the man didnt' threaten him with the gun, the gun was legal, and the man never pointed it at him. When the Airmen saw the cop, he wasn't alarmed. He didn't keep his guard up because he knew he hadn't given the cop a reason to shoot him. He wasn't using the instincts of a soldier in combat. He was using the instincts of a civilian, because the law of jungle isn't used inside the village. The laws of the village prevail, or so it should have. The Airmen shouldn't have lowered his guard when he saw the cop, but as Mathew McCongnay's character stated, there is only one law in the jungle. When the lions hungry, the lion eats. That was the law the cop was following.

If this interview wasn’t so scary, real, and sad, it would be the best comedy ever. I know trumpers, very well. Here’s the thing. They all own guns. Long guns and pistols. But they don’t mind gun laws. They get their license. They register their guns. Even if they are carrying, they don’t “open” carry. They believe in safety, guns stored separately from ammo. Only the hand gun they might carry with them is loaded, and even then, not in the chamber. After a morning hunt, it’s the time to unload all ammo, count your ammo and account for it and socialize. All done before you come in the house. The men and women hunt. Not me, I can’t kill a bug, but I eat the animals. BUT, I was taught gun safety, and how to shoot. "Its not the gun, its the persn"
Well, i guess then give that dangerous person the option to move a finger and kill, instead of forcing them to at worst have to look at a knife, and have to engauge viscerally.
The problem with how a gun works is that its detaching you from the act itself in a way that not even a bow and arrow would even tho its a ranged weapon.
The fact that its less groosome, less demanding, and enabless more detachment from the act by it beeing just a flick of a finger, makes it that much more appealing to a person, especially this "person" who is blamed instead of the person and the gun.
Imagine applying this to a nuke.
" well, he blew um up, but not because the nuke was dangerous, but because he was dangerous"
And yeah, we know, the person is dangerous, but why'd ya hand um a nuke then 😂
But lets use their logic on some other issues they are against in order to support them.
So dont regulate social media, because its how the people use it.
    Drugs arent dangerous
Come on, all the ki- i mean, its the people who do them.
And its not like there isnt logic to this. Again, undoubtably, the people make the decisions, but why aid um in making cirtain decisions easier.
Much better regulation, towards an eventual potencial experimental ban to see how it goes, is not really a big problem when regulation is proven to be effective, and even baning in some places.
Sure, the material conditions arent the same everywhare, but they are pretty simular.
And better regulation just makes sence.
As hasan said, its like with a drivers licence, as it is at least as dangerous as a car slaming into you ( altho maybe less or more depending on the circumstance)
    Anyway, have a good day

There should really be a “Debate This” gameshow where the contestants are given a topic, 10 minutes to research it, and then they’re assigned which side they need to take…and then debate it. Have a couple of debate experts to form a judges’ panel to award points, and then declare a winner. Maybe the final round would be to debate an expert debater for a grand prize. You know what drives me insane above all other Just absolutely ridiculous arguments The gun lobbies cling to Is how misinterpreted the second amendment is. A well regulated malicia being necessary To the security of a free state The right of the people to their arm shall not be infringed. When that was written in seventeen seventy six we did not have The most powerful military in the world, Every branch under the DOD.... So It made sense for everybody to have firearms. Without Individuals.
Having firearms We never would have been our independence. However The constitution Was specifically designed To be altered and to be A living document. This country was created as the great experiment.... They designed it for a more perfect union , but they understood You're going to learn from your mistakes And as time goes on and lessons are learned You need to alter Outdated laws or With technology you must implement new laws. The second amendment isn't finite and it's specifically states The reasoning for the right to bear arms Is directly related to a well regulated militia being necessary Not for defense of your neighbor but for the free state. So it's specifically states. You have a right to bear arms to protect The nation state's security. There is only one reason to bear arms, and it is to protect the country two hundred years ago. I'm pretty sure Now that the united states has the most powerful military in the world. Not only that We have a national guard, And even the smallest.
Cities have police forces. In the year 2024 Are far more of a threat To the security of a free state than they are guardians of it. I'm not saying every militia Is dangerous finding me i'm just saying For the most part The major militias with the most members Are on the domestic terrorist list the FBI tracks. The amendment Isn't As broad as.
    Others like Free speech.
Free press right to assemble.... Each of those has caviouts In certain speech easy legal but The amendment is written as broadly as possible... The second amendment Is One of the most specific of all the ammendments. It does.
N't say everybody has the right to bear arms and then Allow time and states and the people Crack down on Who shouldn't have weaponry. You only have the right to bear arms As a citizen To protect the freedom of the nation state. Just as A society progress And african americans Count as a whole person not just three fifths And us women can vote, Things that seem so obvious and Our mother with thinking Has a hard time imagining How it was Universally accepted that women Black the mental ability To be informed voters.... For some reason people believe The second amendment is a blanket For every citizen being able to own a weapon to protect themselves.... I'm pretty sure that's Because they had never actually read The second amendment as it was written or Like many people they can understand The difference between the militia being necessary to protect the free state In 1776 Is completely moot in 2024. So if you take out that part of the amendment Stating the people have the right to bear arms to protect the freedom of the nation. You negate the 2nd amendment. The constitution in the law was not meant to be stagnant and it was Intentionally meant to be a Constantly evolving and changing Document with one goal. In the pursuit of a more perfect Union... We're always Finding better ways to Do things with education and technology and trial and error. It's pretty obvious You don't need the gun for self protection If nobody owns guns. After the first In australia The primeThe prime minister Made a decision that It was not At all popular With a huge Portion of the population... A decision he knew Would be the end of his political career But he did what was right And outlawed private gun ownership. The n r a type groups were Up in arms and raising hell but within three months Of Open my shooting The prime minister saying We are out.
Lying all guns To the Log going onto the books and All guns being seized.... Three months. And a few years later Even the guys that Originally refused to hand over their weapons Change their minds because As one man stated I don't need to protect myself With a firearm if nobody else has a firearm. Nobody has to Be worried about Bringing
A knife to a good fight when It's impossible To show up with anything other than a bigger knife. So the argument Having everybody armed is Safer is completely ridiculous to begin with but has been proved But proven The best way to reduce gun violence And if you want proof of that look at Australia. I believe one year in the 2000s When your japan had all of eight Homicides committed with a gun.... The arguments Used by everybody who wants Did you join the NRA?And did you vote ditch about gun regulation Have nothing But Easily Destroyed , arguments , you do not just Annie doodle button pirical evidence To shoot them down as well as A very difficult time Taking the second amendment to a Constitutional lawyer who also Has an advanced degree in english and Can you look at the exact wording and understand That the way it was written It is important but also when it was written And why that made sense for the time and place?
In history and the way society functioned That made sense then There's no longer applicable. People love to pretend they know what they're talking about without understanding They are ignorant about What the amendment says and why It was important in 1776 But it isn't Simply unnecessary.
It is harmful To society in 2024. Should only white men who own land be able to vote, Should african americans not only Not have their freedom, but not even be.
    A whole person .... Still.
Only three-fifths? It wasn't until the nineteen seventies that women could have a credit card In your own name without their husband Or a man Giving them permission? Before that was legal and i'm only forty. It's just the stupidity of the masses and the way they Pander to the lowest common denominator of Ignorant people Using In this representation of statistics And almost A group mentality and Without anybody using logic And pointing out all the major holes And they're terrible arguments but when you don't have any push back From rational people who can speak to Basic common sense and not engage in You're mongering but also not Come off as elitest and preachy. Mamma people using common sense and Showing examples of places like australia in Switzerland ( People with switzerland love guns almost everybody Shoots however They are culturally very different from us And although you may own and carry around your gun you cannot Own ammunitiom Without authorization.) No matter the topic regarding lives, the GOP fails miserably to make a cogent argument for their talking points and policies. For example, when the third leading cause of death in the US was covid, and there was a means to drastically lower covid deaths, the GOP chose the least logical paths. This resulted in higher covid death rates in red counties.

I feel like the loss of life through fentanyl is higher numbers of adults while gun deaths are higher amongst children. Not that I’m saying that adults should die over children but I think we have more responsibility to protect children who can’t protect themselves. I’m all for fighting addiction and the opioid crisis as well and I think we can do both I just think his argument is illogical.
