We tried the Republican philosophy for 40 years. They somehow sold democrats, and America in general, on deregulation. And so we have continued to deregulate business for the past 4 decades which is how we ended up where we are now with a shrinking middle class, stagnant real wages, and a once in a lifetime economic crisis in 2008.
John Stewart us about aa far left as anyone is gonna manage to be publicly and have a television show on a major network. He's a liberal and a comedian and somehow delivers more honest and class conscious media to more people than anyone else on American TV. Kind of a gateway drug to finding a radical pipeline if you would.
🌹 My reaction is almost the same when people tell me I have a lot of anger and rage over the fact that an imaginary God calls for my death because of my sexuality, and millions of my fellow human beings continue to worship that deity. My reaction differs in that it also makes me weep for humanity. Spare me the apologetics, as neither the band-aid Jesus nor your personal opinion negates the truth of unchallengeable doctrine.
Ok, lots to unpack here, 1: nowhere has god ever called for the killing of homosexuals 2: the fact that people around you engage in abrahamic worship does not mean they intend or even want to kill you (obviously) 3: I know you want to preemptively brand this comment "apologetics" because you didn't make this comment in good faith, but if standing up to bigotry is apologetics, I'm an apologist until the day I die I have no clue what you think a "band-aid Jesus" is but your comment gives me a clear sense your only exposure to Christianity is through anti-theist propaganda and you don't actually engage with IRL christians about their beliefs, like, ever. Therefore your opinion on it is no more valid than a republicans view on socialism who only watches fox news. In other words, touch grass.
I'm struggling to think of a dumber response the interviewer could've given after hearing the most brilliant political take from Jon Stewart. After all that Farid Zakari is like: "You tell jokes! I think jokes are funny!"
There're a lot of things we could be doing. Helping to reduce the financial strain on those in poverty would bea tremendous help. Socialized medicine (or even baby versions of that) to make it so that having a child or experiencing a medical emergency wouldn't bankrupt people would bea great help to everyone, and disproportionately non-white folks, since minorities are statistically more likely to be in poverty. Having government step in and re-regulate housing, banking, and implementing measures to make higher education more affordable, accessible, and increase efficacy would greatly improve people's ability to live and succeed. Then, there are more direct approaches. K-12 schools have been increasingly segregated for the last ~30 years, and since school dollars are sourced from the local communities, richer (usually whiter) schools get far more budget than poorer (often black and brown) schools, which can be left in dilapidated states with god-awful teachers and administrators. Sooo, spreading out funding evenly would greatly help minorities. And even more direct: reparations. There are lots of bad ways to go about reparations, but investing in communities (I think) would likely be the best way to go about it. How and why you decide where to send money would be tricky (and is far above my pay grade), but proper investment into a community and an environment can reduce crime, provide more opportunities, and implant more hope. This, paired with active efforts to reduce strains on the working class (all races) could significantly reduce poverty and vastly improve the lives of millions of lives: while doing it in a way that simultaneously lifts all races on equal footing. These are just a few things I've learned about over the years, and, of course, all of these methods are fairly neo-liberal, but if Hasan could have his way we'd transition to socialism, which would likely incorporate many of these ideas (often taken more extreme) and fundamentally put different races and classes on a more equal level. If anyone made it to the bottom of this comment, I encourage you to research further. Neither democrats nor (especially) republicans are intent on actually fixing systemic issues (as they rely on them to keep their narratives running), so it'll take a hell of a lot of regular citizens advocating for change, just with every civil rights movement.
Trump had a manufacturing deficient actually and inflation was worse. Also he was hated by other global leaders. He also screwed us on the trade economy and job growth. He worse by a lot than Biden on the economy
Trump is the only president is US history to have fewer jobs at the end of his term than when he started. You can blame that on covid, but the reality is that the economy crashed under trump.
weird that American political shows, ask a comedian to come on and explain the political problems, live! on TV. entertaining? Let's find out together :)

I think we are snowballing to another 2008 or larger. My houses value has trippled since 2017. That's not sustainable.

Jon Stewart is the best man. Wish he’d just run for president . I’d happily vote for that guy
Zakaria is such a tone-policing little corporatist "pick-me".

these are rich liberals, to poor liberals, they seam more like middle of the road right leaning liberals, apples and pears.
