when i was in 8th grade a put together a whole slideshow to convince my mom to buy me a vive it was over 15 pages with the chores id do to pay for it and comparisons to other brands as well as games that i could only play in vr . That Christmas she got me one of the headsets you put your phone inside despite being a little bummed about it me and my younger siblings still had a lot of fun with it. we pinned blankets to the ceiling to make walls for a mini maze in my room and put horror youtube vr videos on while we tried to make our way to the other side of the room while everyone else was trying to whisper, poke ,and spook the person with the headset on. there is no point to this story other than sharing a core memory to this day thats the only vr experience ive had im now grateful i got to share that with my sisters

I love this story so much, and the fact that you bargained with mom for a VR headset like that! 15 pages - you should publish that somewhere! I think VR fans like me would love to read it - see what an 8th grader who really wants VR will do! And the way you worked real-world into VR experiences even with that "phone" VR - that's awesome! THE VOID would have been proud! Keep VR-ing, and hope to run into you in VR someday!

Don't waite for the Quest 3s, its gonna have worse lenses & other downgrades. You can get a Used Quest 3 (thats what I did) I was gonna waite for Quest 4 to upgrade from the quest 2 but the clarity & the price i got the qust 3 for I couldn't wait. Its a worthy upgrade, then the Quest 3s is gonna yank away most of the gains from the Quest 3 putting it closer to a just more powerful Quest 2.

A friend borrowed me his Quest 2, even with a better headstrap i got headache after a while, but it showed me what i loved about VR when i got my first headset, the Vive in 2016.
After i tried his new Quest 3 i decided against buying his old Quest 2.
The main reason is the mixed reality quality, even if some people had different expectations, it gives me the feeling of being not too disconnected and since i still have problems with motion sickness in games with artificial movements / without teleportation etc. mixed reality is giving me access to more options of games i can play for longer comfortably.
Games like Track Craft, Miracle Pool Synth Riders in MR is the stuff i don't want to miss.
Together with the improved performance, resolution and pan cake lenses, i have the feeling the Quest 3 surpassed a threshold from a device i want to use only occasionally to a device i am use more regularly. MR is my personal game changer.

    • @jollyjulian
      @jollyjulian  3 месяца назад

Such a great point about the power (and potential power) of mixed reality for helping with feeling at all sick when playing VR. I do believe that most people can overcome that uncomfortable feeling in VR if they do some things right, and play with it for a little bit each day for a few days, but MR really helps by anchoring you in space, and having the only movement be YOU moving in actual space. That helps more than anything. Great comment - thanks!

As a Quest 3 owner I say you’re missing out if you don’t have one. I’m an OG who has been playing video games since they came out in the 70’s and have been a console guy since I got pong for Xmas. The Q3 is what I hoped for, gone are the thousands of hours playing, in VR an hour well more than enough to satisfy my endorphin rush and make me need a nice nap.

When I got my Q3 last December, I had sold the 2 to a friend and when he came to pick it up he asked if he could try the new one, but I promptly denied because, if he had used the Q3 then he could have given up buying my old one and rather save a bit more for the upgrade.
And I think that the only reason why someone could wait for the Q3S is if they were planning to get the 2 but don't mind waiting for a similar device with updated internals... Like you said, the lenses, the sweet spot is what makes the upgrade worthy for anyone willing to use it more often. I'm moving to a new house and with almost everything boxed I can't play my Quest 3 right now, anyway... I'm first in line to check your new setup arriving soon, cheers.

Hi Julian. New to your channel. I've been using my Guest 2 almost everyday. I really enjoy it, but two of my most used apps (Real VR Fishing / Brink's Traveler) leave me wanting more clarity/sharpness of the landscape imagery. As an example.. When I see recorded video of these apps on RUclips (via my 2K PC Monitor) the landscape looks crystal clear, but when I'm using the Headset it isn't that clear. Have you used either of these apps and if so, does the landscape look significantly better when using the Quest 3 headset?

    • @jollyjulian
      @jollyjulian  9 дней назад

Great question, and first of all, love that you're in your Quest 2 almost every day! That's great! As for those two experiences specifically, I have not used either of those, however, here are a couple of things that could be affecting that. One thing is, often the "recording" of things can look sharper than what we see in the headset. I'm not sure why that is, but it is a thing. Secondly, make sure that your IPD adjustment (how close the lenses are to each other in the headset) is set to the best of the 3 settings for you. Move them together or apart to find the best "clear spot" for your eyes. Also, make sure the headset is positioned on your face perfectly when you put it on. Move it up and down and left and right, and make sure everything is the clearest possible, then tighten your headstrap to keep it in the spot to play. You may already do those things, but those are the best things to try. Also, do you wear glasses at all? If so, getting some LENS INSERTS with your prescription for the Quest 2 will make a HUGE difference. Hope those things help! Thanks for the comment, and keep VR-ing!

Offering everything I actually wanted, which was a legit PCVR upgrade. I decided to get it and give it a try. And boy, oh boy, I am glad I did. If you think the Quest 3 looks good. Just wait until you see this HMD. Right away, I noticed how clear everything was. I mean, it feels like I can read text miles away it is so Crystal clear. I wasn't expecting it to be this good. The detail you can see far away makes up for the FOV I lost in my Pimax5KSuper headset, and being able to not have to worry about charging a battery is wonderful. I don't play my VR games standing or moving around a lot. So the wire doesn't bother me. But, it is long enough to still move around. This HMD is made for people who already have a lot invested and want a visual upgrade. Yes, it looks much better than the Quest 3. But, the Quest 3 is still the Better Bang for your Buck.
I have a powerful PC with a 4090, so I figured why not get the best visuals as well. I work hard for my money. Might as well enjoy it.

What I think is that the Quest 3S will be that middle line between a bit more on the enthusiast side with the Quest 3 and the low entry price of the Quest 2 for people who are just trying it out and seeing if they like it. If they do like Vr, I think the Quest 3S will still entertain them and have good enough specs for them to play with some more higher-demanding games and with higher quality when compared to the Quest 2, which at this point the specs and capabilities of are much lesser relative to the new headsets rolling out. All in all, I think the 3S might have kinda bad numbers due to it being pretty close to the release of the Quest 3 and being a lower quality headset when it comes to specs, but that’s just me.

If you're unsure whether you'll like VR, and want to spend about $200 less, and can wait a month or two more, potentially, the Quest 3s, might be good for you. But the visuals from the Quest 3 are going to be better. Hope that helps!

A great question, and here are a few: First, and foremost, a different headstrap, probably one with a swappable battery, so you can play for longer, and not worry about running out. Helps with comfort in a major way! I like the BOBOVR series so far, but hoping to try some others out going forward as well. Always looking for great headstrap options. 2nd, lens inserts if you wear glasses. A MUST for a great experience, so you don't have to mess with a good fit while wearing your glasses. Lastly, a wifi 5 or higher (preferrably wifi6e) router for playing PCVR wirelessly, if you're able to do that. Okay, that's it for now. Other than that, the only others I have a peripherals like a gunstock, streering wheel with pedals, and a HOTAS flight stick for flight sims. Hope that helps!

Yeah, with Meta going "all in" (for now, anyway) in standalone VR, I don't suspect they will do that anytime soon, and since they are subsidizing the Quest headset and losing money on each headset sold, they want people only in their ecosystem at the moment. But that would be a great thing, and someday, I think we will have that. Would obviously have to be cabled, but that would be something.

I'm primarily interested in viewing my 360/VR photos and videos. However, the Quest 3 has been problematic with me, and apparently many others, when it comes to transferring files from a PC to the headset storage. This should be as simple as plugging a USB-C cord into the headset to the PC, but no....Meta seems to feel that you should have to hop multiple hurdles and only use their Link software. I haven't been successful in transferring files, despite hours troubleshooting the problem. So...great for gaming, but lousy for viewing independent 360 content.

I returned my Q3 and went back to my CV1 and Vive, and yes the Q3 has great lens and screen res, but all that is ruined by the awful ancient tech that is lcd, which brings with it that grey haze over everything, grey black levels and washed out colours and missing colours hues, unlike the cv1 and vive which have oled, and once oled is seen it cannot be unseen, oled is quite literally night and day, oled and hmd are way more important to immersion than screen res.........so until i can get a Q3 with oled, then i am happy with my old oled vr hmds.

I also had a Vive PRO (was my first headset), and when I went to the Index from that, I really did notice the difference in contrast and "true blacks" from not having the OLED screens that were in the Vive Pro. However, for me, I will almost always take better clarity, no "god-rays," better resolutions, and better FOV over the better contrast. It's such a balancing act. I mean, how awesome is it going to be when we get a headset that has ALL OF THAT, and doesn't cost a fortune? Will we ever get there? I bought my Quest 3 last October as soon as it was available to buy as it was finally worth buying a VR headset, I had tried every VR Headset to date and even bought the VFX1 back in the mid 90's.
It took a while to finally get to a point where there was so close to no flyscreening and watching a Movie using the Headset was worthwhile.
The next upgrade should remove the very small amount of pixelation that is still barely visible and being able to clip on prescription lenses makes all the difference for us glasses wearing people :).
We are finally at the stage where VR is worth buying and everyone that has tried my Headset has gone onto buy a Q3 for themselves, I also bought a Q3 for each of my Grand children as it's cheap enough to buy as a Birthday or Xmas present, unlike another Brand that likes to rip people off, that I won't mention ;) damn fruit vendors ;)

A great question for sure! It all comes down to how much you feel you may use VR on a semi-regular basis. If you feel you'll probably use it at least once a week or more, I recommend the quality bump of the Quest 3 - worth the money, in my opinion. Otherwise, at this point, I would probably wait till the Quest 3s comes out for a little less, but the quality of the visuals will not be quite as good. Hope that helps! Thanks for the comment!

Going to see what transpires through til February when the headset has been on the market for 2 full years, but I kinda want one now, as lots of great games are coming like Wanderer, Alien, Metro, Behemoth & more. Quest 3? Yea I don't have a PC & I'm not going backwards to PS3 graphics. Maybe Quest 4 might hold my intrest.

Completely understandable on all counts, especially with you being in the PSVR ecosystem already. That would be great if Sony would release a PSVR2 v2 with pancake lenses, but I feel like they are kind of abandoning the PSVR at the moment. Hoping I'm wrong. Really want them in the game!

@@jollyjulian I think Sony is making cuts to keep the business afloat, not abandoning. Abandonment would be not investing in a PC adapter, or investing in 2 new 1st Party exclusives, or 2nd Party exclusives like Aces of Thunder & likely, Resident Evil 9, & more. It's barely year 2, & Sony dropped 7 1st & 2nd Party exclusives in 2023, so the narrative is off IMO.

It is not about Quest 3 vs Quest 3s, they arent in the same class.... Quest 3s vs Quest 2 is what its all about and to that Quest 3s wins. Quest 3 has proper lenses not the crappy ones the Q3s will come out with...
Quest 3s is not really an upgrade worth getting excited for. Valve been silent for years and Index is super old by now so if they said something about their future headset thats worth getting excited for.

A fantastic question, and from my point of view, having used both headsets, it would definitely be a Quest 3. Better optics, resolution, the option to go without a cable (if you choose), much better lenses - it really is the better options. As much as I loved my Index (and I really used it a lot), the Quest 3 really looks better now. And it's cheaper, and it has very good inside-out tracking. About the only things I feel are better on the Index are, slightly better tracking due to lighthouse tracking (external tracking), slightly better VERTICLE field of view, better sound (that really does rock), and less compression due to the cable. But even with all that, I still use the Quest 3 every day, and haven't touched my Index in nearly a year. Hope that helps! And learning how to connect and such isn't too hard. Lots of great vids out there to help with all that. You should be good to go!

@@jollyjulian, I got Pico 4 new through eBay from a seller in Japan (do NOT buy the Chinese version if you live in the US, and possibly Canada; the Chinese version has several restrictions that make it very hard to use without substantial tinkering, courtesy of the Chinese government). Took the seller several days to send it, as they warned, but once they did send it, it got to me in California shockingly fast.
Got to say, my Pico 4, of the headsets I have, is my favorite to use. Once I found the fit for the facial interface, and bought AMVR's somewhat overpriced "halo" headstrap attachment, I found it extremely comfortable to wear for a longer time, and it's great for games that include a lot of movement, like exercise games and apps.
The Pico is much better balanced than the Quest 3--which I have and quite like, by the way--and it has substantially better binocular overlap, so you see more of whatever you're looking at through both lenses at once.
Really, my only, and biggest, problem with is that the library, though growing, just isn't big enough, and--of course, there are exclusives on the Meta headsets that Pico is very unlikely to ever get. Some people complain that it's not as bright as the Quest 3, nor are the colors as bright, but honestly, I haven't had a problem with that.
If you're using it largely for PCVR, though, I think you simply can't beat the Pico 4... but that's my experience.
I'm waiting with baited breath for the Pico 4S to come out, as, according to The Mysticle, it's been certified in South Korea.
