Morning Jay great video. Here in UK Purigen is cheaper than either Chemi-Pure Elite or Blue. But I use purigen and rinse it out each quarter in aquarium water. Then after a year. Yes year bin it. Not worth potential of loosing prize fish over £s or few $. I do same for my Blue and Ultimate. After six months take out 50% of Chemi pure products, replace. That's my routine for both Chemi pure and Purigen. I could try the bleach, but old school one chemical to keep as far away from any aquarium or fish cleaning equipment is Bleach. Keep on providing us with great videos. Ps your film crew and sound effects department are awesome. 😀😂🐟😂😀 CichlidChip

Jay, you were talking about Purigen (which I use) saying on the label that it's not an absorbent. Look closer and the sentence reads "It is not a mixture of ion exchangers or aDsorbents....," ( I capitalized the D). So it must be an aBsorbent by default since it is micro-porous (like a sponge, which is very aBbsorbent). The activated carbon in chemi-pure IS an aDsorbent as all activated carbon is. (An aDsorbent allows impurities to attach only to their surface which is why high quality carbon talks about `greater surface area``. Carbon can also be regenerated but only in an acid bath or if heated to over 900 deg. F Both are great products that do their job differently and to the same end, almost. Love your enthusiasm Jay.

I use Purigen along with Purit. My saltwater tank is crystal clear with no odor. Both are in bags in my canister filter. I don't waste time time recharging Purigen though. It scares me too much to possibly put bleach in my saltwater tank. It is pretty cheap for what you get. Worth just buying it new imo.

Gotta one up you here, Jay. What's better than both those products is an algae scrubber (Joey's channel shows how to build one). Algae removes phosphates, heavy metals, and other dissolved organic compounds. It will definitely remove nitrates, reduce water change frequency, and if your bacteria can't keep up with ammonia and nitrites for some reason (like a dead fish behind the background pumping out ammonia)it will soak up those too. All for the price of taking up some space and a 6w LED lightbulb. I've had an algae scrubber in my sump for over a year and next to growing pothos, it's the best thing I've done for the tank. Just sharing info. Love your message about PTSD and fish tanks- much respect for the vets!

I really like the video, thanks for posting it and covering the topic. I use purigen in two 40 gallon aquariums that each have one large turtle as the only occupant. The purigen bag is placed into a internal filter and keeps the tank water very clean (compared to before using it). Purigen is cheap enough on Amazon (around $7/bag) you could toss it every 3-5 months, but that is wasteful so i chose to regenerate the stuff according to the standard recommendation with 1:1 standard bleach: tap water and then use prime 2oz/cup water. There are people out there on various forums that have lost corals using regenerated purigen. I am guessing this was due to residual bleach or ammonia-compounds from the prime. They describe a "fishy" smell which is likely nitrogenous bases amines. I rinsed the hell out of six purigen 100 ml bags and can still slightly detect the smell. Sorry for the long story. Jay do you have any experience with this?

How much purigen would i need to order so that, for my Tidal 55, i can have the correct amount in the filter (does it need a bag? does it come with the bag? Cani just buy a Seachem "The Bag"? Is the Seachem "The Bag" way too big for a Tidal 55? Is the Seachem "The Bag" a fine enough mesh to contain the Purigen? Is the Seachem "The Mesh" bag so fine that water wants to just flow around it instead of through it?) ...back to the original question, How much purigen would i need to order so that, for my Tidal 55, i can have the correct amount in the HOB filter, it it's proper bag, so that i can have one set up working, and another second at the ready? For example, let's say the Seachem "The Bag" is the best size/fit for the Tidal 55 and the Purigen in the needed quantity, i would want to have TWO bags, each with enough Purigen for the Tidal 55, ONE to be in use, and one to be regenerating/stored for when the next switch/regen is needed?

Listen from 1 Jay to another ;), Does it matter how much Purigen I add to my Media bag ? Like if I have a 30 Gallon Tank will it cause any harm or disrupt any of the other types of Filter Media or bother my Fish if I use 500 ML's of this in a Media Bag as opposed to just 100 ML's of it ? Or it doesn't matter I can use as much as I want ? Also 1 more question if you happen to know the answer, Does it matter what order I put the different types of Filter Media in my Hang On Back Tidal 110 Power Filter ? Like I have the Seachem Matrix, Matrix Carbon, and Purigen in mine. Should the Carbon be at the bottom of the Filter and the Matrix in middle and Purigen on top or vise versa so water coming in filter hits a certain one first or does that not matter either ? Just want my set up to be perfect and have the cleanest clearest healthiest tank in Town.

If it "controls" nitrate, what happens if you have a planted tank and actually intentionally add nitrate (through PMDD), doesn't that sort of defeat its purpose? I also add phosphate as a plant nutrient, as I understand Chemipure Blue also removes Phosphates?

Also, when I ordered this from amazon, I noticed it was damp inside, is that normal? I put it into the bag and noticed it was brown looking and not white but once it's in my filter it looks white.
I am a noob to this stuff but lately my tank is cloudy and I can't figure out why so I am trying this. I have an aqua clear 70 and just load this on the carbon and place the biomes over it. Is that ok? Thanks for the great review!

    • @OriginalMindTrick
      @OriginalMindTrick 7 лет назад +1

You can't use too much of this so no problem 'overdosing'. It will just last you longer in the filter. How much you minimally can use depends on how much "stuff" you have in the water you want removed. For example if your tank is full of wood that leech tannins you want a lot of this stuff. If your water already is pretty clear and you use polishing pads you can get away with using little.

I agree, but just get 2 that way while you renew the old stuff, you can use the new stuff and then when the new one needs renewal, you swap in the renewed stuff; No down time. This way you can experiment to see if the renewal process really works. Again, I agree, just buy another pack and toss the old one if it's more cost effective for you. I like to experiment and have renewed this stuff in the past, but just soak in bleach and rinsed very well and reused it.

That's my plan. I've only got a 29g tank atm, so I'm not going through all that. It's only about $12 for the small pack. I would be more inclined to recharge it if I had a few larger tanks to treat. Those larger containers of purigen are pretty spendy.

I don't know what the buffer thing is but most people who put it in the fresh water just do the prime thing for 8 to 24 hours after the bleach
Then they put it back in the fish tank where did this buffer thing come from

I tried testing this product, i did 100% wc on my pico reef so rest assured i would have low nitrates (i use rodi) tested my nitrates and its 5 ppm aftee doing that i over fed my coral with reef roids, wait for 3 days tested my nitrates and i have 20 ppm nitrates i know purigen doesnt remove nitrates, but as it claims it prevent me from having ammonia nitrites and nitrates

Can someone answer some questions for me?
Will using this starve my plants from nitrates?
Will this work in a koi pond filter? For a 2500g pond (Yeah I know id need a lot of it lol)
Does it need fully replacing every 6 months or bleached every 6 months?
Will this help keep brown algae away in my fish tank and green pea soup away in my pond?
Will this make water more safe for neocaridina shrimp?
Pleaseee someone help me lol this is the first time ive heard of this stuff and definitely something im interested in!

Purigen is a must have for any aquarium I had a cichlids tank and now I have a reef tank and it’s doing a great job. I also use bleach and then prime to clean it. I only buy a new one about every two years. Works great

It is a form of mechanical filtration just like carbon. As for people with planted tanks, it's totally fine. It doesn't directly eliminate molecules like the inorganic nitrates that plants use, they are too small, it only removes complex organic molecules (that would otherwise decay into ammonia and nitrites ). It works as a molecular sieve trapping complex molecules which u then remove for the aquarium. When u put it in the bleach these organic molecules are oxidized into smaller molecules and CO2 which are then small enough to wash out of the purigen molecular mesh. It is the exact same principle by which activated carbon works but with a much greater active surface area and a strong inert molecular structure that can withstand the oxidizing effects of bleach.

Given that you started off your comment by incorrectly stating carbon is a mechanical filter, I'm going to ignore the rest of what you said.

Iff it just mechanically catches bigger compounds, how can it prevent them from decaying into ammonia and nitrate? Chemically it doesnt make any sense.

Just my opinion but I would suggest not using it in conjunction with any other dechlorinator other than Prime since I have heard it can have a toxic reaction with certain water conditioners. This needs to be highlighted in the video?

I have two negative comments about Purigen. My first negative is their customer service. When I tried to recharge the Purigen bag and it would not return to the white color and stayed brown. I emailed Purigen and their answer was I was using the wrong bleach. Ok, my bad. I ordered a bottle of Purigen and their mesh bag. Yesterday I removed the bag after using it for a month. I soaked it in the correct bleach mixture and began rinsing under water and their mesh bag separated along a seam and the Purigen granules spilled out in the water. I am done with Purigen.

hey Jay, love your vids. I have well water, I put my first chemi-pure in 8 days ago .. still can't c thru the tank , I'm running out of ideas.. there is nothing on the market to lower pH. or nitrates in well water. I've tried for over a year. nothing in any amount will affect this water... got any ideas other than buying dishwater???

Have you tried Seachem's "Alkaline Buffer" & "Acid Buffer"? Look up these products and see if what they do is right for you. They can be used in a planted aquarium as well. I keep them in my arsenal for emergencies.

Seachem is great stuff but best to buy new I steed of recharge as if u don't do it right it may wipe ur tank bacteria out dead bacteria =dead fish I wouid use if you don't have plants in your tank but if you keep a planted tank I wouid t use it it may soak up the plant ferts it says it don't but you can't be sure on that a lot of people won't use carbon in a planted tank but you can I don't think it soaks up ferts but yet again can't be 100% sure I bet it soaks a small part of some heavy metals but person won't use them now only when taking meds out water column best to just put fine floss in your filter make sure it turns over 5_10times an hour and clean filter each month and do 30/50%water changes each week and your water stays clear only feed a small amount of fish food

In an FX6 it should be in the last tray after you bio because the water goes through the center from top to bottom. Let the bio feast first and the Purigen clean up after. I haven't used Purigen in years but now I am motivated to use it again.

  • @franmorr1966

I would've liked to have seen a before and after nitrate reading to prove its value. Also, I'm concerned that if the product absorbs ammonia how will the good bacteria be able to survive in the filter media if it's eating up ammonia--the ammonia which feeds the good bacteria??

This is the claim of seachem it has been proven many times at helping maintain a clean and balanced tank.
