Purigen: How To Recharge Safely!

- Purigen is a great water clarifier and impurity remover, and is made even better by the fact it can be recharged! However, recharging calls for using bleach...which can be pretty scary, especially considering you want to put the Purigen back into your tank! This video takes you through the relatively simple process to ensure you safely recharge your Purigen.

OK so this is the hard way. For anyone interested in an easier way I have two. Mason jars. Larger mason jars. You can bleach and rinse over and over again in the mason jar without losing much purigen, however, if you just take a ladies nylon, the foot part, and cover the mouth of the mason jar and dump all the bleached purigen into it, now you can rinse it right in the nylon without losing any. Then dump back into the mason jar to recharge with prime. By the way it is two tablespoons prime to one cup water to recharge. Not the "whatever" is implied in the comments.
The other way is household hydrogen peroxide. Instead of taking 24 hours it now takes just hours. Pour one cup hydrogen peroxide to three cups water, give a stir and watch the magic. Then just recharge with prime as usual. Cheers!

ZERO Prime is needed. It doesn't "recharge" anything.
Eh, the easy way is to buy new and stop with this nonsense.
It seems cheaper to just buy a new bottle of purigen than use that much prime
Honestly, I've abandoned re-charging. One mistake can ruin your tank. I buy new every time I run out.
Prime is not needed. Just a marketing ploy.
@@TheFishTankGuy EXACTLY plus it's weaker after recharging. it does depend on your bio load and how fast you go through a packet.
mine was blackish and was still working, i had a ton of tannin's from a lot of driftwood, yours still looks new
+tea glass Yeah, you can definitely wait longer than I did... Honestly I don't bother recharging it anymore. I toss it.
Couldn't you just use a sieve or colander and coffee filter when pouring off the liquids, wouldn't that make it that much easier?
+Savario Ferrara yeah for sure, this guy is doing it the way hard way. Nylons from the dollar store work best.
I use mine in a spice bag. the ones you use to put spices into soup for infusing. bought 4 off of Amazon for $3 and they work great
That's a GREAT idea :)
Sorry for commenting on an old video but for the biggest part it's a very good video. 2 observations though.
1. You definitely don't need that much prime to regen it , I'd give it a good rinse and then a soak In a solution with a tiny amount of dechlorinator in it.
2. Those saying it's not as good once re generated . Don't you think seachem would not reccomend a recharge if this were the case . They're a company out to make money at the end of the day and by telling people to recharge it theyd be losing money and future customers with bad reviews if it lost its effectiveness
Agree and agree. I appreciate the kind constructive criticism. I actually don't regen Purigen anymore because even with the Prime, the bleach can sometimes find its way into your tank once you put the Purigen back into your system.
@Dang Le it's 50/50 chance that something will go wrong with recharge. I tried few different methods. Few times worked well, 2 times I poisoned tank (I did save fish, but killed filter and plants). I always test recharged purigen after recharging process is done by soaking it in distilled water for few hours and checking water parameters. Never got chlorine readings, but still something was off 2 times that water test didn't detect.
My Purigen got way darker than that. It turned brown. Every drop of water that runs through my canister runs through it because I have it positioned against the uptake inside the filter. Mine needs to be recharged already and it's only been 3 weeks. There were tannins in the water so I don't know if that played a part in the color or not.
Hmm.. I tried doing what Seachem said when recharging, ended up taking around 4 days.
So now I just soak in 100% bleach for 24 hours, RO + Prime for 24 hours and then just RO for 24 hours.
Seems to work fine.
All you really need to do is be able to not smell the bleach in the Purigen.
Andreas Chryseliou I agree Andreas. You don't need to take the full cycle time to recharge it, but for me personally, I just wanted to make sure it was definitely recharged safely...so I took my time :)
Hi, thanks for the video,i have a question. After adding purigen is there any amonia for the bio filter to work? Is it ok to leave it in the tank, the pet shop gave purigen for the yellow water after adding a dragon skin wood in the tank. A new setup
What brand of bleach do you use? Are all brand of bleach safe to use?
I am pretty sure that you are supposed to use 4 tablespoons of prime to 1 cup of water. I use Purigen for my tanks and that's how I've been doing it. Then you are supposed to use seachem discus buffer or neutral regulator after the prime. The buffer is 2 tablespoons for every cup of water. Soak for 4 hours. This step says for freshwater. I am not sure why you need to do all these steps, but that's what my bottle of Purigen says.
It wasn't really necessary to recharge your Purigen. I wait until mine gets extremely brown (almost black) before I do it, and it works fine up until that point.
Connor Williams Yep! I agree with you...I could've definitely stood to wait much longer than I did before recharging. I mostly wanted to see how the process would work, which is why I was a little premature in recharging. Thanks for the advice though!
that's what I wanted to know ... :-)
When I see an algae increase I clean my purigen 🤣
Sunlight (UV) 96% chlorine removal within 2 days. I have 3 bags so no problem to leave in sun for a week. I will still do chlorine test though.
Thanks for the advice!
Great video! Thanks for the advice
No problem...I actually do not do this anymore. I toss the Purigen and get new every time. You can recharge, but be VERY diligent about rinsing and using Prime.
Could water conditioner be used after rinsing out the leach, instead of prime?
What type of bag do you use when you place it back into the aquarium?
The original bag you cut open that can't be resealed. What size bag lets water flow through it but not fine sand size Purigen?
Thank you for tipnya Mr 👍
Appreciate it. Very helpful
It’s still in good shape
Honestly I do not recharge Purigen anymore, only because I have an algae scrubber and that seems to really help keep my tank looking good.
How many days does this take? Less than a week right?
buzzyfuzzsaw WAY less than a week. You should basically let it soak in the bleach mix a day, in the Prime mix a day, drain it, and maybe do a partial Prime mix for a few hours. Basically 2-3 days and you should be good to go.
I thought the instructions read one or two capfuls of Prime when rinsing?
Considering the amount of prime you're using to do this, it seems cheaper to just be more purigen.
I thought the same thing hehehe Prime is expensive
Truth on both accounts. To be totally honest, it's much safer, to just buy Purigen rather than re-charging. If you don't rinse it well enough, if you use too much bleach etc, you could get some leaching (which has happened to me) into your rank that can wreak havoc.
but if you buy the pre bagged version it is 10x easier to recharge than doing it like this. also you dont need to use nearly as much prime as what was mentioned in the video, so it would be dumb to buy new purigen every time when you can easily recharge it. and you can recharge it up to 10 times. so cost wise you can buy a bag of purigen for around 12 dollars. so to buy a new one every time would equal 120 dollars for the same thing that you could have for only 12 by recharging. all you have to do is follow the simple recharge instructions and you will not have any bleach left in it afterwards. i see that you mentioned that you ran it under water after soaking it in prime? well thats probably where your leaching came from. water from the tap has bleach in it. you need to take it straight out of the prime soak to your tank
also dont know if it has been mentioned yet, but you can wait til it gets alot darker brown than that before it needs a recharge.
Trevor Holland
Zero Prime is needed. Just a marketing ploy.
what does 1 to 1 mean? 50% water and 50% bleach? Thank you.
Yep! That's exactly what it means! However, word of warning, make sure after you recharge you THOROUGHLY rinse in prime along with regular water. Any leftover bleach can be disastrous!
I don't understand, tons of videos and websites say to skip / forget the buffering step, but it is still on the seachem website? So as of today 5/20/16, are we supposed to buffer or not? lol
great video
Flemming Jaeger Thanks Flemming! I didn't follow my own advice on my last recharge and almost screwed my entire tank. I'll be talking about that in a channel update video soon!
use Seachem Safe to dechlorinate purigen after bleach. PS that purigen was nowhere close to being exhausted. Purigen will turn very very dark brown before its exhausted not simply off white.
Mine was like a nasty rusty color in 1 month, If I have well water would I still need to use prime? I don’t use it when I do water changes
Do you have a freshwater tank? If you don't use Prime currently when doing water changes and haven't had any issues, then I would think you are ok...however, if you are recharging the Purigen, YES! Absolutely you must use a good amount of prime...the bleach will nuke your tank otherwise.
The Fish Tank Guy yes all my tanks are freshwater, never use a water conditioner, only when I see some tarred fins I’ll use api stress coat, I have them soaking now in the bleach and water solution, so will api stress coat work the same as prime?
@@heatherleelovejoy9690 Nope... Stress coat does not have the same ability to remove such a high level of chlorine from the purigen. You have be very careful when recharging purigen, make sure you mix up the prime and purigen really well. Even rinse and do twice to be safe!
The Fish Tank Guy so stress coat won’t work? I can just pick up a small bottle on wednesday
@@heatherleelovejoy9690 Not to neutralize the chlorine in the bleach, no. Play it very safe!
Is it ok to use "Safe" instead of "Prime"?
How many recharges do you get out of that 100mL bottle of Prime?
Zack Brideau A lot. A little bit of Prime goes a long way...honestly, I haven't even gotten through my bottle yet so I don't have an accurate number to give you!
wouldn't rinsing it with just water reintroduce chlorine/chloramine again, thus opposing the goal of regenerating it? In other words, wouldn't it just be better and safer to always rinse with dechlorinated water?
No.
The goal of regenerating it is to purge it of the waste chemicals it's accumulated over time. The tap water is used to rinse away the bleach (chlorine). Yes, the tap water has small amounts of chlorine... but not enough to cause any harm from rinsing.
A drop of Prime will take care of the problem with tap water. No way would I use this much to recharge but to clean after I'd use a tiny bit.
You don't need to take it out of the bag, nor did you need to recharge yours. That purigen had tons of life left in it before it was dirty enough to need recharging.
CUEBALL424 Yes sir...you are correct. Back when I made this video (fairly early on in my saltwater days) I made it a little more difficult than it needed to be. It doesn't need to be removed from the bag and leaving in the bag provides a good opportunity to get the bag nice and clean too. In terms of when to recharge, it's not a precise science...when I notice my water is requiring a bit more maintenance, and the beads are brownish, I'll give them a dip :)
Yeah, I like getting the bag clean too, plus if you take it out then put it back you will loose some because its such a small media, the stuff gets everywhere.
When they get brown, but that wasn't even close to brown, and since each recharge makes the purigen weaker, you should really only recharge it if its really in need of it.
But if you say your water quality slips and recharging the purigen when its only that dirty helps, then who am I to say no to do it? I usually wait though till it is dark, dark brown.
Make sure when you use the prime, that its not the bottle that has slime coat in it. I subbed and liked vid
Thanks for the advice, I appreciate the sub!
"'No worries'' as we say in Australia. It's an expression meaning "do not worry about that", "that's all right", "she'll be alright" , ''no problem'' , '' forget about it''. Any how, even if you're experienced in the aquarium game, we all can still learn from each other, or learn a better way of doing things. Have a good one..mate, ✌
How much of the prime did you put into the bowl?
+Aaron Le Regardless of what I put in, you only need about 2 tablespoons. Adding more will certainly not hurt though. Be sure to swish the Purigen around in the bowl!
I don't think you need that much prime. You're gonna be using like 1500 gallons worth of meds to clean purigen lol
Haha...totally agree with you. I think I might delete this video off my channel shortly, I don't even recharge Purigen anymore.
Or ANY.
@@TheFishTankGuy time for you to follow through and delete this video, it's full of mistakes
how long can you recharge it for?
interesting.. but wouldn't it just be easier/ cheaper to just buy more purigen? think it's a great idea.. but I'd rather just say fuggitabout it and just buy more purigen.. but to each
I made this video a long time ago...and I'm now on board with you...for two reasons. 1) It's quite a hassle to go through this regen process properly. 2) If you screw up at all you can nuke your whole tank. Not worth it. :)
Larry Lewis Agree with you Larry just buy more purigin.
Agreed
@@TheFishTankGuy Just curious, but if you're not on board with recharging the Purigen anymore, why do you still have this video up? Why not delete a video that you can't highly suggest people try to do?
He must be new to it. It gets a lot weaker every time you do this process. Unless you are using a large amount often it's just not worth the hassle and time. I buy either a liter or 2 liters at a time after shopping around a lot. I eventually always find a good deal. When the product is eventually totally exhausted I do recharge it but like everyone I know, it's just doesn't work as well. So unless I'm out of it I use a fresh batch but to each their own. It goes without saying that this product works great as I wouldn't be using it for years now.
When you are draining liquids out, why not try pouring into a coffee filter. I would use filter holder and all.
Awesome advice, I really appreciate it!
Panty hose, knee highs, is what I use for all my media that requires mesh bags. Works great and so cheap.
What bags do I use?
Why did u take it out of media bag?
You do not need to use that much prime. It is a super concentrated formula...2nd strongest in the market I believe. Only need 2 tablespoons of Prime (30 mL) per 8 ounces (1 cup) of water. I think you are telling people to use way too much. I mean it wouldn't hurt anything but it would be wasteful in my opinion.
Andy Rea Andy, thanks for pointing that out. I'll be honest, I was overly cautious when making this video to ensure that it was definitely safe when putting back into the tank. I'll definitely take your advice into consideration when I recharge in the future, and I'll get a pop-up added into the video giving you a shout-out and referencing your advice. Thanks!
No worries. I agree with you. Being cautious with our tanks is never a bad thing! Take care.
Andy Rea
You don't need to use ANY. It's just a marketing ploy.
which bleach do you use ??????
+rampage just use clorox normal unscented beach. Don't use scented or splashless bleach.
only 1 question..after i use bleach, can i use another product like tensiongon to make my purigen safe?
+MrJackshark Anything that removes chlorine, ammonia, etc. You want to make sure you really swish the Purigen around to ensure that the product comes in contact with all the Purigen beads. Make sure to give it a good rinse too :)
no
Hi, in Seachem site is wrote that after prime for sweet waterI have to use discus buffer or acid buffer, is that true?
+rodolfo beltramini I believe that was an older process that they no longer recommend. I believe using those buffers would have an effect of raising PH when putting the Purigen back into the tank.
It's still recommended. But only for low buffered tanks with a low KH.
Nope. Nothing. Just watet.
which bleach do you use ?
To be totally honest...I don't anymore. I just buy new Purigen. One instance of not rinsing enough can introduce bleach into your tank. Bad news.
Do you need carbon with purigen?
Nope, but it's a good combination to have both :)
good vid but im with larry just replace it. its actually mid price compaired to most things we have to buy for a coral tank
Agree 100%...I'm thinking about taking this video down actually because I never recharge anymore.
just pour the Purigen through a fine mesh fish net ya doing too much work...carefilly pour...etc...
Can you recharge phosgaurd?
Nope, Phosguard cannot be recharged. From what I have read, no product similar to Phosguard can be recharged either, despite some claims you may be able to.
I'm following this video and recharging my proven. Seems cheaper on Amazon to buy a new bottle. Great video tho!
+Bruce b Dude... Buy that new bottle. I don't bother with recharging anymore myself.
I was just trying to let people know its not at all necessary.
This is why I don't user purigen, is such a hassle. Rather don't over fee and keep your tank balanced. None of this products are actually needed if you know what you doing
why not just leave the purigen in the "bag' through the recharge process???
Yep, that's definitely an option. However, personally I have stopped recharging Purigen. Unless you do a very thorough job of rinsing it, there's a chance it could leech bleach into your tank. It's happened. LOL
No need to use that much seachem prime.. just 2 caps and 200ml of tank water is fine
Good advice!
This stuff is flawed and can be catastrophic in certain scenarios.....I found where it CANNOT be used. Fluval Stratum and alot of driftwood creates a naturally acidic PH....I ended up with snails in a plant shipment, and realized they need a neutral PH to fully function, so I used a little crushed coral to jack the PH up. Thankfully I had no fish at this time, as I did an experiment with Purigen. In less than 2 hours after putting it in my filter, it took a 6.8 ph and completely crashed it.
Luckily snails seemed to handle that ok. If I had fish, it would had been much worse.
Im not saying that its bad in all scenarios, but the moral of the story is....Dont jump on a bandwagon. Seachem did not put a distinct warning on their packaging about it, which is irresponsible of them. Before using any product, experiment with it separately first.
I just purchased purigen and it's beige colored.
Yep...I don't even re-charge my Purigen anymore to be honest.
i have a bleach that contain 1% amine oxide. so can i use that bleach for recharging my purigen..?
I'd rather just buy a new tub of purigen.
😅
Honestly, I do too. I should probably take this video down actually!
My purigen went dark brown in the first day lol lots of driftwood though
Here is the link to seachems webpage. It tells you how to regenerate your Purigen.
www.seachem.com/purigen.php
Thats nothing, you puilled it out waaay too early. Mine will get dark brown. Thats when its time to regenerate.
No doubt. I was a total n00b when I posted this video...I don't even regen anymore, bleach is too sketchy.
@@TheFishTankGuy The bleach is a bit off putting. Weird to have bleach associated with my aquarium water in anyway. I swapped to a media from these guys that recharges in regular salt water bluelineaquariums.com/ seems to work just as well if not better than purigen.
Next video: how to make cut coacaine 😊
2tbsp of prime per each cup of water....not cover purigen in prime then add water.
Dude...Keep it in the bag.
Pour Prime until in covers the Purigen is bs - you only need at most two capfuls along with some water - this guy must be a Seachem salesman. lol
My used purigen looks brown
I real like this product but I’m not that comfortable using bleach to recharge it only takes one ☝️ mistake and that’s it I would just buy more
ejaylatino If you take your time, chlorine will naturally evaporate. I recharge my Purigen, but I let it sit in bleach for 1 day, then RO water for a week, swapping every day Just let nature takes it’s course.
"Needs recharged?" Needs TO BE recharged.
Don't be that guy.....
Soknik01 The guy who laments the degradation of the English language? Sorry. Can’t help you.
@@6SpeedVert It appeared to me that when he used "recharged" as the passive participle of "needs" he probably intended to use the gerund "recharging" but simply misspoke. As for "the degradation of the English language" I cant help but wonder if you have considered what the very point of language is or if you are just perturbed at the realization that the English language is growing and evolving so fast that you're unable to keep pace? Language is a tool for communication and I have a hard time imagining a scenario where an English speaking individual found "needs recharged" to be the source of confusion on their part. To offer an analogy- In spite of him not holding his hammer with the same grip that you find most comfortable he was still able to drive the nail home perfectly well.
In the event you should find yourself curious as to what linguists and authors have to say on the subject you might enjoy a 20 minute documentary called _English 3.0._ Here's a link to the doc on Vimeo. Enjoy

That's a lot of words to essentially say that I'm right - lol. Ever see the safelight glass commercial that says" If your windshield needs fixed".
