Thanks for the review. I picked up their Chrono for my wife, with the added moon phase complication. The fit and finish for a watch at this price point is beyond amazing.
I agree - it's astounding value!
Thanks for the review. I would fancy a mesh bracelet for that little guy. Movement is a joy to view.
I think a good sail-cloth would go nicely
Excellent movement, had a Seagull 1963- superb value, nice watch. Sold it recently as I found 38mm bit too small after 20+ years of divers.
Good review, Cheers mate 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Steve :)
I’ve waited on this review! Big Thanks! Looks like a solid piece, Ivan!👏🏻👌🏻
Yeah it's pretty good for the price!
Ivan, I suspect their reading is over several positions, and yours is just dial up. Dial up generally shows the movement running faster than it does in normal use. I have that movement is my Seagull 1963, and it's gorgeous. Merkur are certainly one of the better Chinese brands. Good review as usual
Err... nah man, that sheet is a printout from a time-grapher reading. Wish they told us what position.
I know I will get one of these eventually. This company does a Great Job on all their models.
Nice - thanks for sharing :)
YES, I've enjoyed your review. I also enjoy this watch. I was put back a bit at 15mm but I still like this one..when you turned it over it took my breath away. I'm looking into this one.
Thanks Mike - let me know if you do get it. It’s pretty astounding value!
Great looking watch 👍 thanks Ivan good review
Most welcome James :)
I have a watch with ST1901 as well. And I have a TimeGrapher machine, too. I think the lift angle of ST1901 should be 42 degree, which is the same as Venus 175. In this case, the lift angle you found on that paper is 52 degree, so it can be translated into about 270-280 degree / 42 degree, which is very typical for a Seagull movement. Commonly ST19 will settle in +7spd to +12spd accuracy, some lucky guys can have better results. The real power reserve is
Nice details there - thanks for sharing! :)
Ah, I've seen this on AliEx, was wondering about it.
It looks pretty good. Was scared the polish was gonna be a little too much, cheapening the look, but it looks alright actually.
Yeah it's overall not bad looking at all IMO
@@PerthWAtch you also have experience with Sugess? Those look to sit roughly in the same ballpark.
No I haven’t seen those
I think that putting a made-up French name on a thing doesn't make it attractive. Chinese makers need to work out good, authentic Chinese branding that can help get them past the idea that their products are second-rate versions of stuff from Switzerland. Sea-gull is a good example, but given the view of seagulls in many parts of the world, still not a 100% solution.
Maybe I should offer them branding workshops in return for watches.
Oh you'd have to join a long line of people who are offering such services... it does baffle me why they just can't seem to get it right.
Great review! That movement has to be the most beautiful movement in any watch under $500.
I think you’re right there mate!
Really happy with the Alpha Speedmaster homage, (after 2 years) which sports the same or very similar movement. I was lazy about not screwing down the crown, and that eventually invited the gasket to shift out of place. Had to use oil to get to move back. So now I'm not confident about the original 50M WR.
Thanks for sharing the experience
If you're not a fan of the Seagul 63 look but love the movement then this is the watch for you .Great stuff.
Thanks man! :)
Great looking watch. Good value for the money. Thanks for the review.
Most welcome :)
Looks great, sucker for a panda bi compax! Just a shame it’s so thick but understand the movement forces it to be a bit chunkier!
Yeah it is somewhat disproportionately thick for sure
Thank you for your review. I have too many chronogragh watches (2). Still got one of these in my ali basket just got other watch priorities. Cool alternative to 1963 nonetheless.
Haha 2 is one too many??
@@PerthWAtch two is just right for me. For now haha
nice! do you think it might fit properly a 15 cm wrist? lug to lug 47mm is not so short... thanks!
I think you could still possibly get away with it
It's the same movement as sugess, right?
Doesn't this have a second hand control function?
Is it possible to rewind the second hand and stop it by reversing the time adjustment?
Yes I think so
I've had this watch ((Panda, not reverse) for ~6 months.
You really need to be careful with watches that use this mov't.
If they come from the Seagull factory in Tianjin they are actually pretty solid, if they are made 'under licence' elsewhere, not so much.
Merkurs quality is ɢʀᴇᴀᴛ.
This timepiece is great. It's been a really solid little performer for me.
I put it on a good quality Milanese bracelet and it looks and wears really well - even on my ~8" wrist.
A great little column wheel mechanical chrono for $200?
Would recommend. Strongly.
Thanks for sharing your experience - that’s great man! Do you know if there is a way to tell if they’re direct from Seagull Tianjin?
@@PerthWAtch
I normally ask. Not that you can always trust the response...
I know Merkur takes its quality pretty seriously, so I didn't bother to ask this time. However I had a 1963 that never felt right and I was constantly having to re- align the chrono hand... Until it fell off. That's when I started digging in to the manufacturing.
The reason that Baltic, Lorier, Poljot 24 etc. use them and charge ~$500 + is coz they're the real deal from Tianjin.
I've always assumed that what Merkur use is also a high quality version because having the opportunity to 2 ST1901's in hand at the same time but noticing that they were chalk and chess operationally.
You just need to be really careful, and as I learned, jumping on AliX and grabbing the cheapest 1963 I could find didn't work out well!
I think that I'm going to replace my 1963 with a 40mm version. Think I've found a decent seller. They've sold 900+ units with a 4.8/5 rating. I'll do a bit more research. Happy to keep you in the loop if you want? I'm in Melbourne. If I buy it, could even have it sent to you first?
Thanks for sharing the info and your kind offer. I’m actually having to slow down doing RUclips as much this year as I have a bit too much going on - so I’ll sadly have to pass on this... another time I would certainly take you up on that!
Interesting piece. Regards.
Thanks
Ivan any preference on the Panda vs. Reversed Panda design? If so why? I'm torn ... both look good ... but not sure if there is any benefit or downside to one or the other. Love the look of the Seagull movement ... thickness is a bit off putting as is the bracelet ... thought something Ieather would look better ... maybe a rally strap.
I think it’s purely a matter of preference and taste really... I prefer reverse panda myself
These Chinese watches are really coming up in price. Do you think this trend is warranted? I say, as I wear my $70cdn Starking Auto... Which I love, love, love.
Actually when considering a mechanical column wheel chronograph, you might say this is pushing the price barrier!
Hi quick question. I received this watch a few days ago and while the start/stop button has great tactile click, the reset button has no tactile click and is just springy. Do you remember if your version had the same "non clicky" reset pusher?
Yeah it’s not very clicky. The start stop has to be like that because the energy used to press it is sorted for the reset spring back of the hands.
Decent quality. On Ali you can find many designs based on this seagull. If movement is genuine that's another story. I would go for a panda, minimum 40mm. Lack of sapphire is not a problem. You can find double domed with coating separately and on AliExpress too. Too bad no bracelet available on this one
Yeah, I wish there was a way to confirm the authenticity of the movement
Do they only do the regular panda and not the reverse panda anymore?
Not sure, check the links?
When will watch making engineers take into account case spin ability?
Dunno man... please keep sharing these videos with them! :)
Yep. This one is on my shortlist
Cool - what else?
@@PerthWAtch I just bought watches recently.... The most recent read a Seestrern 62mas homage.... I'll probably wait for a bit.... I might save for a while get a Lorier or Direnzo... He's planning on making more runs of previous designs. He's a good designer, IMO. I have time to sit back and see what drops for a while. I don't have a chronograph and this one appeals to me... Are you still enjoying it?
Oh yes it is still in my collection and will likely remain so given it’s features!
I already have a chronograph with the ST1901 movement, mine was made by the UK company under the name Precista. The UK company is Timefactors,I've not had any problems with the movement..................................
Very nice!! Does it have a swan neck regulator?
I can't tell,it has a solid caseback...............
I bought one recently and really disappointed after receiving it. Didn't receive the grey suede strap but a hard brown strap. But also no display back for some reason and just a merkur solid caseback. I bought the watch because I wanted to see the movement, sigh...
Wish I got the grey strap and display back, that's all I want.
If the product wasn’t as advertised, surely you can return it right?
@@PerthWAtch Now I look at the site it does not mention display caseback on the official site. Nor does it from other sellers. But every video I saw of it on RUclips has a display back and that grey strap. Just really disappointed by them. I messaged them, hope I can get a display caseback and grey strap.
Ah a pity it’s like that… not nice!
@@PerthWAtch yeah very unfortunate, if they were more clear I may not have purchased. No reply yet so going to follow up with their customer service to try to get the display back and strap. I haven't even seen a photo online of it with solid caseback and this brown strap
Good survey Ivan - it's built to a price, but that price is very fair. I'm amazed to discover you have 17cm *diameter* wrists 8:43 - you must work out :-p
Oh yeah, the camera makes me look small ;)
hello,Ivan ,we have new style for review, can we talking about that?
Sure, please send me an email :)
Looks decent. Strap looks like it has a light purple tone, not my fav.
Ooh didn’t notice the purple...
I have the Seagull Crono and have looked at this watch but the 'Pierre Paulin' name stops me.
What's wrong?
@@PerthWAtch Just the name, seems out of place. I would have just gone with 'Merkur'.
Chronographs aren't my thing but nice to see something different
Thanks :)
Panda cute bromance movement there
What?
First like and comment! Woohoo!
Haha yes indeed :)
Would look much better with a different strap
I suppose - what kind you think?
With the same movement and same looking, Sugess got better comment than Merkur in China.
Does it feel the same?
@@PerthWAtch They looks almost the same, but Sgess got both 38mm and 40mm version.
