Just took up slide a couple weeks ago. I appreciate these videos a bunch! I come from an era where you couldn't find this stuff online. Mostly inaccurate tablature was about all you could hope for from from internet back then. Cheers!
I've got arthritis in my hands and I've been playing a lot more slide now. Just can't reach some of the chords anymore. I've been practicing with open d and g tuning and I never thought to incorporate the base strokes when playing scales. Really great idea. thanks
I just ordered a conversion but for my older Framus d74 along with a slide to begin learning slide guitar although I plan to lay it across my lap as in a lap steel. Accidentally found this video and need to look at your previous videos. I have a good impression of your instruction so far! Keep it up!
Coooooooooooool .. finally a OpenD slide tutorial.. Been playing only openD for ages..but never looked at how..just went with it .. and 'found' my own way i guess. but to see your vid , talking about the actual reason and official scales... thats Cool!. Thanks Man!
just learning so knowing which fingers and strings you are playing with and on (maybe a tab?) would be a helpful. Butt I am liking your lessons a BUNCH
I recently tabbed out "Swamp Dog Blues" and this lesson helped alot.. By the way, I'm Buck the guy in the picture. Niki is the artist who happens to enjoy music but can't tell one note from another. Thanks again and please keep up the good work
+Luke Swain I've messed around with dadgad some as a finger style tuning, but not as a slide tuning. There are endless options for open tunings, but open G and D remain my favorite for slide!
You definitely deserve more likes and subs that is for sure. I think maybe slide guitar whether it be dobro or lap steel has made a real resurgence in the last few years and I hope that it continues to do so. Do you agree or is it just because I have got more interested in slide that maybe I am more aware of it? I have just bought a lovely but relatively cheap Dobro style guitar made by Harley Benton and was delivered yesterday so I am all set to go and learn (with your and other RUclipsrs help ) some basic scales to get me started on my way.
Really appreciate your kind words! I've been in the acoustic blues world for a long time so I've always been aware of slide guitar and not sure of where it is in the popular consciousness. So yes, interest = awareness I think! There is a wealth of great instruction on RUclips. I also encourage checking out some of Truefire's offerings. Enjoy your adventures in sliding, it's a lot of fun!
Thanx for the lesson , maybe you should open up with an intro of playing a lick or two just to draw the attention of the viewer .. but other that that keep up the good work
Jurgen Blick that's a great song! I am sure there are many free resources for finding the changes and probably some free video lessons here on RUclips.
hi. I just got my first tri cone resonator and I really appreciate the help im finding here on youtube. I was wondering if your instrument was an alersi, and if yes, what do you think of the build quality.A friend and I are interested in the cutaway version but are a bit wary of an unknown far off entity. If its another brand, what might that be? So far weve only seen the cut on the Chinese version. Thanks
Hi Steven and thanks for the kind words. My instrument is a National Reso-phonic Style 1 Tri-cone that I had customized with a cutaway. I am not familiar with Alersi, but have played many other affordable reso-phonic guitars that delivered good tone at an affordable price. I have also heard of people buying less expensive instruments and swapping out the cones. The Paul Beard rest-phonics distributed by Gold Tone are very good. Good luck!
Hey Scott, my name is Phil and I'm in Scotland. I'm just getting ready to start learning slide guitar blues. At the moment I have an Epiphone Les Paul, sadly can't afford the real deal Gibson. but the Epiphone has humbucker pick ups and sounds ok . my question is; when i tune my guitar to open D, as it is an electric guitar do i follow your lessons the same way as someone playing an acoustic guitar. or should I look for different lessons for the different discipline. Maybe sounds like a silly question, but I'm pretty much a novice so not sure about it. Great videos bye the way, very well explained and easy to follow, thank you.
Hi Phil, everything I teach herew can be applied to the electric guitar. I prefer to learn new tunes and techniques on acoustic as it helps develop good tone and technique. Playing electric is undeniably fun and exciting, but electricity and effects can hide a multitude of sins!
I like the lessons! Could I make a suggestion of loosing the busy sweater and the cluttered background. Weather permitting take it outside or at least in a calmly painted simple room. Thank you!!!
Hi Todd. And thanks for the kind word. I'm sorry that the casual setting is not for you. These were my first attempts at online lessons ad I was focusing on the quality of the content over the production values!
Ohyeah... I lost my slide long long time ago...when i still just played c-tuning... But i found that a good cheap plastic lighter ..works awesome!.... Also add to the show gimmic for viewers ..lol....ya ask someone watching for a lighter?.. its holland and most people have one...lol.. and then flick it on to show its a lighter .. and then go out with some delta blues on the fly... hahha...gets 'm everytime..
Hi Diana, this is a pretty old vid. I have 2 new sites. FWIW, all the slide vids are available here on my RUclips Channel. Here are the new sites: Guided Gutar Lessons - www.guidedguitarlessons.com Scott Perry, Vintage Blues Guitarist - scottperrymusician.mykajabi.com Thanks for watching!
How do i know when and where to incorporate the slide from the scales? And can i mix the major and minor pentatonic? Like from 2-4 fret on string 1 and then 3-5? All confused help. I want to play nice and cant figure out when and where to use the slide. I dont how to explain this

Nice clip Scott. Easy to understand and informative. Looking forward to more of your content.

I just ordered a conversion but for my older Framus d74 along with a slide to begin learning slide guitar although I plan to lay it across my lap as in a lap steel. I at a comfortable position in life as a guitar player but just came across your video and wish I had this lesson when I was starting out :)
I appreciate these kind words, Rishubh. Thank you!
Can you tell me the make of your guitar? Being in Australia we get hit hard with import duty etc.
National Reso-Phonic Style 1 Tri-cone with a custom cutaway.
The minor pentatonic scales sounded like a sitar! Nice job man!
+Luke Swain thanks for the comment. Yes, indeed, the pentatonic sound is common to almost of cultures music. Wild, huh?!!
You should try tuning your guitar to dadgad and make a video. It's basicly a sitar tuning
+Luke Swain I've messed around with dadgad some as a finger style tuning, but not as a slide tuning. There are endless options for open tunings, but open G and D remain my favorite for slide!
Thanks for this !
I’m pretty sure Bonnie Raitt uses the slide on her middle finger. Great lesson, thanks!

4th finger allows you to slide up to the 12th fret. I use it for that reason on my tricone.
Thanx for the lesson , maybe you should open up with an intro of playing a lick or two just to draw the attention of the viewer .. but other that that keep up the good work
thanks so much my friend !!!
My pleasure Arther!
Yip good stuff 👌👏🏴🥃
