I was thinking to myself if it would have been real sportsmanship not to challenge. Because in sports refereed by humans I want to think that there are multiple missed calls in a match but that they are spread evenly on both sides and thus neither gets a net benefit.
I don't trust the graphics, I'd prefer if they showed actual high-speed camera footage. To me what they do is as ridiculous as claiming someone robbed a bank but when challenged show some computer generated "reenactment" as proof instead of the actual security camera recordings!
Plenty of space to view 6 recordings on my screen. The Hawk-Eye system has 6 to 7 cameras. Basically (in tennis at least) the system makes a guess and the guess is converted to "infallible computer graphics". I suppose as long as its error isn't that bad it speeds things up.
I love the utter confusion on Hewitt's face when Sock tells him to challenge it. Like "Is this bloke for real?....Um, sure I'll challenge it!" Hilarious moment!
I remember going to the US open as a kid. Vijay Armitrage was receiving and knew the serve was in. The chair would not change the call and challenges didn't exist yet. On the next serve he received, he hit the ball a mile out of court. He made his point. Tennis used to be known as a gentleman's game.
This was pure tactics. Hewitt won the point, but Sock won the mental game. It's hard to battle against someone you like. That's why Sock went on to-oh, he lost this match.
+biggestkkfan The amazing thing is that we find this amazing. I, like you, was a little thrown back at the honesty of Sock. It just goes to show how far we've lost our way when a show of good sportsmanship amazes people.
What are you talking about? Sport really isn't about being ruthless and taking every advantage you can get. It's about playing a game by the rules you both agree upon at the start. The guy served a great ball and deserved the point.
Very much agree with Charles K, in skateboarding it's also very much frowned upon to not call out for instance a toe touched the ground. Often only the person performing the manoeuvre can know he messed up (But still land the trick).
I really want Jack to be even more successful. So many of us wouldn’t have said a word and kept the point but Jack spoke up. Jack has class and I want him to succeed in whatever he does in life.
dude served, umpire said it was out, guy who was on the receiving end of the serve told the server that it was in, server challenged the umpire, computer figured out umpire was wrong
Sometimes, in tennis, when you think the umpire (the guy who calls whether the ball is 'in' or 'out'- if it's 'out' he'll say 'fault'- which you can hear in this clip) is wrong, you can 'challenge' him, and call up the computer replay system to double check. If even a teensy bit of the ball even touched the white line, it should count as 'in'. I think you only get a couple of these per game, so you can't do it every point. The guy in the hat hit the ball and the umpire called 'fault'- saying it was out. They were going to continue on with the game, but no-hat guy, in a moment of (perhaps stupid, but noble) honesty, noticed that the ball actually touched the line- actually wasn't out- and encouraged his opponent to challenge the umpire's call and get the point.
Don't find it stupid at all. Don't know the guy, but if he's well off financially and there's a money prize than he could legitimately care more about the sport than himself playing it. Personally, if money isn't on the line, I'd do the same thing because I don't see a point at all in winning at such a cost as letting everyone fail to notice the error.
And then... Trump. Although, he's such a loser it's hard to call him getting a couple million fewer votes than the all-around despised Hillary Clinton a "win", but I suppose fairness isn't in a Republican's vocabulary.^^
Really a fine example of sportsmanship. It's easy to keep silent and let the situation roll into your advantage. But it takes courage and good values inside to be truthful. Certainly J Sock showcased an exemplary act. He may have lost this game, but won people's hearts and respect!
When Chris Evert was the beneficiary of an egregious service call where she respected her opponent, she used to just stand there , and stand there, and stand there for about three to four seconds in case the linesman might want to change his call or the referee might just want to 'overule' the linesman's call. She did it a lot in Goolagong matches. She even signaled a few balls of her opponents in before the linesman made the call. But she did not do that when she had less respect for her opponent...

obv tennis is a game where you have to hit it to your opponent but it has to stay in the court at the professional level there are referees who call the ball in or out, but the players have a certain number of chances to challenge the call and get a computer to see if the ball was in or out. In tennis it's the opponent who can call whether a ball is in or out when hitting really close to the line. When the opponent says "out" it's not usually challenged. Jack could've easily said it was out and get the point but he decided to be truthful about it and said it was in. The serving player served a ball that was on the line which in tennis is inbounds and would score the serving player a point (calling it a point for simplicity). The judge called the ball out. The receiving player has a great view of the ball and knows the ball was in. Since most tennis leagues have a challenge system where you can challenge a call you think was wrong, most players would just let the call be because the serving player can challenge if he disagrees with it. Jack Sock decided to be a good sportsman and tell his opponent that the judge was wrong and the ball was in, making him challenge a call when it appeared he wouldn't have otherwise.
So basically tennis has officials and line callers that say whether a shot/serve was in or out. Hewitt's serve was called out, but Sock being slightly closer to the ball and having a trained eye as an athlete saw it was in. Most players would take the free point, but Sock wanted to be classy and told Hewitt that his serve was in. What you see on the screen is a simulated version of what happened with the ball based on cameras tracking it, showing the footprint the ball would have made. If any part of the ball touched the line it is considered in, which it was so Hewitt now gets the point instead of the original call to Sock
