Ott Tänak led Rally Chile BioBío on Friday evening after his clever tyre strategy proved to be decisive on the opening day of the event.
M-Sport Ford Puma driver Tänak set the pace in the day’s first gravel road test at Pulperia but his fortunes soon took a dip when issues caused by a heavy landing dropped him to third. As well as winding co-driver Martin Järveoja, the impact also caused minor suspension damage and the loss of hybrid boost.
Nevertheless, it was Tänak's strategic approach to the repeated afternoon loop which helped him to reclaim the top spot. In mild spring conditions, he was the only frontrunning driver to select a tyre package consisting exclusively of soft compound Pirelli rubber, known for its superior performance but shorter lifespan.
The 2019 event winner snatched the lead from Teemu Suninen in the penultimate test and, crucially, went fastest again in the 23.32km Rio Claro finale to extend his buffer to 4.2sec overnight.

iirc, in the interview munster said they picked the wrong pacenotes - also you can see in the video at 3:24 that Louka (Munster's co-driver) has a notebook in his lap

Three are proper highlights thank you. Thank you. I lost interest in the sport. The official WRC channel is a joke. Short videos with awful music added.
So far my favourite rally has been in Estonia. Fast flowing roads, beautiful scenery - just enjoyable to watch. But this year's Chile has been nothing short of spectacular, pretty sure it will be my 2nd favourite Rally in the calendar :)
WRC co-driver forgets his pace notes! He is no longer a WRC co-driver. You don't come back from that at WRC level.
Sad for Lappi. It's not easy but hope he can finish the last 2 rallies and do reasonably well. I don't really wanna say, but I am pretty sure his career is on the line.
If his career is on the line that’s sad. He has often been the fastest Hyundai but is also appears to be the least politically connected in that team.

I've heard Gregoire later said they actually had pace notes, except not the right ones. Perhaps they took the notebook for one of the next days by mistake.
