What if there aren't any number available for your area? I live in WA and it tells me there aren't any numbers available. Why?

Anson, you have a lot of really good questions that need answers ! I found when I tried to link my first google voice to my home phone which was an Ooma Voip system, that it wouldn't let me. I never got the "claim" option and I didn't know I wasn't set up. I ended up linking to cell phone which WORKED and THEN I could link to my Ooma phone at home.

Thanks Anson! I suggest looking closely at legacy Google voice. There are some filtering, voice mail features worth checking out.
I didn't realize my pop-up blocker was stopping me from in gv. I was just going to the hang outs dialer to make calls from the web / tablet. Thanks again!
Yes, the "Legacy Google Voice" seems to give more options for custom settings, particularly for setting up voicemail answering messages unique to each person calling you on your Google Voice number. (I have different messages for several of my contacts, saying, "Hi, Brother number 1, (or Brother number 2, or Friend 1, or Friend 2, and so on). I can't pick up now, but I'll call you when I can" and so on.) I'm not sure if this is available in the new GV settings.
Yes I really wish Google would get their act together on integrating these products. Both seem to have some nice features that are not reproduced in the other. I'll update when Google does!

Within the past week my Google Voice there is a field on the right side of the page showing the number to call with, a field to enter a number or list of suggestions. It also can switch to a keypad. Think add this accidentally as left column in you video has everything I need. Have you seen this before, if so how do I get rid of the field?

Nowadays I am having a hard time setting up my phone to ring when I get a call they my gv number, it automatically goes to my vm. I use this for work and my vm is set up w message but I would also like to be able to answer calls when they come under the google voice#.

I really like having Google Voice but I am annoyed that I cannot use, move, download, etc videos that I am sent in messages. My kids send me videos of the grandkids and I can't do anything with them. Can you help?
I really need your help and hoping you can. Long story short my boss set up an account back in 2014 and we use this as our 24/7 emergencyline. Well we were unable to gain access to the old account so I suggested that I create a new one so he is not receiving the messages on his phone but is receiving the calls the messages are being left on the app which he needs these did be transferred to his personal phone in a text message. Also the business greeting that I have recorded is now on his personal cell phone please help is there a way that I can get this set up where he received these calls via text message? If not is there a way to retrieve our old number and just go back to the way it was?
how do I search my GVoice history for particular phone numbers? the instructions on GV help do not work. GV recommends using format style 555-555-5555 (does not work). I am using GV legacy.

I have a separate Hangouts window. I don't know how he got it integrated into Google Voice. I'm ready that it can be integrated in gmail as well, but I can't figure that out, either. I can't make calls from Google Voice itself even though it looks like you should be able to... The call icon is grayed out and unavailable.
Also, when I first set up both Voice and Hangouts, I was testing them from other phones. Every time I did that, there was ringing in Hangouts. However, no other calls ever ring! I get voicemails, text messages, and missed calls, but I can never answer the calls even though I'm online and the volume is up...
The annoying part is that people keep talking about Hangouts going away soon! If they do, I don't know how I'd be able to make calls...
Can you sent Google a video on how not to break the service.
After more than ten years I’m giving it up because they break it, then get it working perfectly, then break it again. It’s broken more than it works.
The suck part is there are no other services out there that work like GV that don’t cost an arm, leg and your first born.
The developers don't understand the saying "don't fix something that ain't broke"! It's so annoying!

I had Google Voice years ago and it was great but semi-limited when it came to doing the same things as regular text messaging. I see that it's been updated to send images - yay! Do you know if in the messaging function you can schedule texts? I'm also looking to be able to send to a group but have it viewed by the recipient as an individual text? I run my own business and looking to streamline my reminder texts that go to a small group of people.

Hello Anson, thx for the video. Out of nowhere , when i launch GV, i have three columns instead of 2. the first two columns are normal. the third column , or far right column, shows a keypad as if to make a call. You can hide the keypad and then it gives you suggestions of who to call i assume based on history. How do i get rid of the third column?

I accidentally lost my long time google voice number by adding a new number that I do not want. When trying to reclaim it (per googles instructions) I only see the new number to select and not the old original one. I'm not sure if this is because I never verified the original one, all I know is it showed up under my google voice account - before I picked the new one, and I want the old one back. Can any one pleased help me get it back.

You can choose a phone number from anywhere in the US, not just local to you. The cities that pop up when you get to the part to choose a number are based on your IP address, but if you type in an area code in the box, you will get cities within that area code instead.

What do you mean by your "actual number?" Your Google Voice number or the actual number assigned to the phone you're dialing from? What number do other persons see?
In the GV legacy it was possible to delete old texts. Now they go forever ! How are unwanted texts deleted in the new GV ?

Hello, thanks for making the video I have been messing around with this for some time and I haven't been able to get it to work the way I want maybe you can help. I have Iphone that has the google voice app on it. My issue is, when i call my google voice number it rings on my phone as it should, but if i go into the missed calls and click on it to call that number back, the person on the other phone will see my personal number not my google voice number. Is there a way to setup the google voice so any call, voicemails, texts to stay within the google voice app and not get mixed up with my personal phone?

Down load the hangouts dialer, set it up and sign in with your GV UN and PW. Call back from there look for a tutorial for hangouts dialer.. you'll love it..

So all im trying to do is make my Samsung android phone say whos texting me so I don't have to look at my phone. My htc phone had that built in. Lots of apps with a whole lot going on I don't want. What I need is a way to forward sms messages from my main number . Can they be forwarded to Google voice. That way when I’m overseas and using local SIM card I can get the sms sent to my main sim that I leave at home.

Hi Anson. Great video; thank you! I would VERY much like an Android tutorial. I'm stuck with knowing if I set up an account on my laptop, how do I use my cell to make calls from the Voice number? Do I just download the app, and it automatically knows I already have a Google Voice? Or when someone calls my Voice number, does my phone identify it somehow as that number instead of my normal cell number?
Unless something has changed that was the ultimate issue with this app. There is no way to identify where the incoming call is coming from. I Love all things GOOGLE but they have missed the boat here and do not much seem to care.

I think that just has to do with numbers that are available. I set up my Google Voice number several years ago, and I searched for numbers putting in my name. I was able to get a number that spells out my abbreviated first name and my last name.

Yeah, man great video! I have a question, though... Do you have to pay to listen to voicemails or text messages when you are traveling? Also, do you know if having a number of messages uses up the alotted memory across all the google services?
I'm glad you found it helpful! You do not have to pay to listen to voicemails or messages. You do need to be connected to the internet so that can either be wifi or a cellular data network. The only payment you would need to make would be the payment to get internet. I hope that helps!

Hi Anson. I'm an American, currently living in Spain through 2020. I have an American address, and still have a home in the US. I plan to return to the US next year. I have a dual sim iPhone, and have had problems with the pricey travel pass feature offered through Verizon prepaid, as I get charged for the service when I don't want to use it. Your tutorial discusses call forwarding, but I'm unclear how to set up google voice for iPhone so that I get rid of my Verizon service and keep my existing phone number. I'm also curious if I can set everything up from here in Spain.
