Back in the 2000s I had an old lady pressing my hair with a hot comb and iron flat iron. It was the best presses I've even had and I never had heat damage. Once I started using flat irons at home, even the ones that cost over $100, I started getting heat damage from only straighten my hair three times a year. I wish I could find that old lady again. Maybe she has grandkids who can do my hair:(
I had an old lady that was pressing my hair too. A woman came up and says it looks like she has a fresh relaxer on her hair now. She was amazed at my hair transformation, hahaha. It would last until I washed my hair. They used pressing cream and great products to wash, condition and style the hair with. They recently sold their hair salon.
THANK YOU!!! I'm glad you said it because somebody needs to... A good press goes a long way and these flat irons can't do it alone if you want it to last!!!
@@cfoster6804 no I don't. My hair is type 4. I've lived in several hot, humid, and desert climates and have had my hair silk pressed in each state with just a flat iron no problem. The key is making sure your hair is moisturized before hand (deep conditioning/hair mask) and that the hair is blown out as straight as possible before flat ironing. You also don't use any products on the hair other than heat protectant, a good moisturizing serum (chi or design essentials) and an anti humectant. The temperature of the flat iron is important too. And thats determined by how fine or coarse your hair is.
I definitely agree. When I get my hair pressed, I look for a hairdresser who uses a hot comb. And she doesn't have to go over it with a flat iron, and it gets bone straight.
Love this! Been doin hair for over 10years and u r so right! I knew trolls was gonna hate...but like u said there is NOTHING like that hot comb...flat irons just can't compete...and u don't need a lot of passes through the hair and natural curls revert when used correctly.
carlosandmuriel 😂😂😂😂😂.. right. I have never ever used a flat iron and my clients hair doesn't budge when they leave my salon. And curls right back up after they're full 2-3 weeks of wear. That's why i was over here killin myself laughin.
4Z Texture here. Pressing comb just take it to another level and sheen. I feel like it really doesn't break my hair bonds....it just hits wayyy different
I have been watching videos about 'silk presses' and was wondering "why don't they just use a hot comb?" Then I stumbled on your video! Old school is sometimes best.
I did not know that. I wondered why when I flatiron my hair it does not last long, but when I would get my hair pressed or press my hair myself, it lasts much longer than just flatironing my hair. Thanks for sharing.
You had me jump me holding that straightening comb up toward the camera lol …My sis and me still traumatized from my mother‘s pressing our hair, and scalp felt like it was on fire back in the day lol love your sense of humor!
It’s all about products that are used in your hair. I’ve had my hair straighten with a hot comb and it damaged my hair, and she has to go over it like 5 times and it doesn’t have any movement to it whatsoever. Anytime I go to my stylist now she uses a flat iron, gets it bone straight and has plenty of movement. Not to mention she doesn’t give me nearly as much damage.
A real press starts with a pressing comb and also a marcel flat iron that goes into the stove which we would call Thermal Pressing back in the day and the hair would bounce and have movement even when product was applied to the hair
But you can get a silk press done with a flat iron, because that's the only way mine has her been done. So that's not true. I have pictures that prove that. I want to know what products are used on the hair instead of the grease they used back in the day.
Yes! I finally found a video that answered my question! I was like I can wash and flat iron my hair at home. Why they not using a hot comb and just on my edges
I stopped using a hot comb to press my hair, because I had to keep walking back and forth to the kitchen and then back in the bathroom to see what I was doing in a mirror. I believe I now need to invest in a oven for my pressing combs. I did buy an electric pressing comb you plug in,but not the same as the one you put on the stove.
Would you (or did you) say that the difference between old press and new press is heavy oil/grease for protectant vs today's light weight silicone heat protectants?
I need to go to you. Not everyone knows about hair. I have thick black hair and text shrinkage is really! This Florida heat don't play! But I can't just go to anybody to do it because it will get burned out and thin out because of excessive heat damage with a lot of hairdressers down here. I've seen it and experience it. The old school hairdressers are My go to, that I can have my hair back like it was, when I was younger. Healthy, long, black hair that shines and bounce. That is how your hair should be treated at all times.
_Vanntastic But thats her point. Only a pressing comb will get it straight and keep it that way. Flat irons aren’t all that. Yea they can be used that way and possibly keep it that way depending on the technique of the person using it. But like she said nothing will do what a pressing comb can. I vouch for that. Personally prefer hot comb over a flat iron. I only use a flat iron for weaves.
yeah if they would listen. she said it would be that straight but then it would puff when you go outside. The pressing comb will keep it straight for a long time. you are gonna get your moneys worth with that pressing comb.
Cool this is what works. Blow dry the hair as straight as possible use some pressing cream just a little. Press the hair with the hot comb and after that use the hot marcel bumper curlers on the hair to curl the hair and that press will last forever. I've been doing this all week long and its been working out well. I've went old school and let the flat irons rest. Use a pressing pad when you press the hair and that hair will come out Asian straight and silky too !
U probably just burned your hair to a crisp. My hair been getting pressed since I was 5 , I wish my curl pattern was different by now, but your statement is false luv. #cosmetologist
Amen to the pressing comb I believe in the pressing comb, hot comb, straightening comb girl we are old school I love pressing comb love and hug god bless❤️🌹❤️🌹❤️🌹
Roshann Harris if u dont leave it on the stove to long and test it with paper towel a hot comb wont burn your hair . My mom used it all the time on my natural hair and its healthy no heat damage and never used a heat protectant till this day .Idk heat protectant is that new or something because I been natural all my life never had a perm never got heat damage. Maybe these new naturals need to stop putting they flat iron on 410-450 degrees really
nastasha nastasha I've used a pressing comb for over 20 years with no heat damage. My hair reverts back every week. It is thick and long. It's all in the technique and heat control.
You dont need a straighten comb.... You are just too lazy to use the right products.... All u need is a blow dryer... Serum.... And flat iron as well as a glosser for a glorious silk press
Cece Giles lol the right products..boo where when why and how? There’s called a preference. And technique. A flat iron is shit compared to a hot comb...in my opinion. But some people can get away with a flat iron but I bet you it won’t last as long and any time I’ve done a flat iron my presses always lasted longer. Facts. This so called “silk press” is another term for a regular press just using a flat iron..don’t get it twisted. The lazy ones are the ones using a flat iron if ya wanna get technical. But to each their own lol 🤷🏾♀️ #HotCombPressesTilIDrop
Jasmine Quinn... in my experience it can work depending on the coarseness of the clients hair... it's not horrible to whip out an electric one but for all around clientele you want to keep a tradition pressing comb on hand despite the convenience...

Yup. They call it thermal relaxing nowadays. Nothing like a good ole hard press.
I feel like the pressing comb is less harsh on our hair than the flat iron because you aren't crushing the hair between two hot plates.
THANK YOU!!! I'm glad you said it because somebody needs to... A good press goes a long way and these flat irons can't do it alone if you want it to last!!!
But you can get a silk press with a flat iron. Because all of my silk presses were done with one. And they lasted.
@@honeyvsenpai Do you have a loose silky texture?

Ashley Nichole yes that hot comb will always be the best I still have my child hood hot comb lol
it's all about technique...I have seen my stylist use a flatiron on the coiliest of hair and NEVER used a pressing comb...and no it's not a lie.
carlosandmuriel 😂😂😂😂😂.. right. I have never ever used a flat iron and my clients hair doesn't budge when they leave my salon. And curls right back up after they're full 2-3 weeks of wear. That's why i was over here killin myself laughin.
Hot combs > Flat Irons any day! Nothing gets straight and stays straight like a silk press with a hot comb.
It will get it straight, but some textures won't stay straight.

Yes ma'am! I still use my mom's old pressing combs and my little stove!
Looks good as always! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise.
I remember that comb. I need you in my state 😄, because I'm ready for a perm
Naw, I'm going back to the pressing comb. I feel like it's less damaging than the flat iron. I like this lady.👍🏾
Would you (or did you) say that the difference between old press and new press is heavy oil/grease for protectant vs today's light weight silicone heat protectants?

That hot comb the truth.
Interested in comb press for grand daughter that play high sch sports ( getting out of braids!)
do use other marcel flat irons? also do u use any heat protection on the hair?
so what you recommend for product to use for the silk press, and which old school straighten comb please
what happened to your other channel?
HELP! I live in Florida humidity. If I straighten my hair, stepping outside just blows it up.
Same here, that’s why I only straighten once per year during December-February when it’s cooler n less humidity and no rain
I use a flatiron and get the same results lol I’ll be damned if I let someone use a hot comb on my head.
Thank you I love old school ( only found a electric old smokey
Csn you talk about thegold and hot Root straightner
but dont hot combs cause breakage
No they dont cause breakage I been getting hot combs since I was a 4 years old actually you get more breakage with a flat iron
It's actually the opposite.
Finally! Somebody who knows how to really do this correctly! I’m gonna have to come get my hairs done by you now, shoot...
Heat is heat.

Yeah and then get heat damage 🙄
