- Our time in Hokkaido has come to an end and today we are boarding an overnight Japanese ferry to travel from Otaru to Niigata. This is a 16-hour ferry crossing aboard the Shin Nihonkai ferry.
In this video, we'll share our whole experience traveling aboard a Japanese ferry for the first time. We'll show you the boarding experience, the capsule rooms we booked, give you a tour of the vessel, show you the food at the onboard restaurant and more.
Fun fact: this ferry has an onsen / sento aboard, meaning you can spend part of the journey enjoying the baths and soaking in the pools!
How to buy tickets for the Shin Nihonkai ferry:
Option 1: www.snf.jp/eng... - the official ferry website is entirely in Japanese
Option 2: Book through Direct Ferries, though when we checked, you needed to reserve your ferry tickets at least 14 days in advance
Option 3: Show up at the ferry terminal and buy your tickets in person, though this can be risky if you leave it to the last minute.

Overnight JAPANESE FERRY ⛴️🎌 | 16-Hour Ferry Crossing from OTARU to NIIGATA on the Shin Nihonkai
Our captivating journey in Hokkaido is drawing to a close, and today marks a new adventure as we embark on an overnight voyage from Otaru to Niigata, spanning a remarkable 16 hours on the majestic Shin Nihonkai ferry. This video is not just a mere travelogue; it's a comprehensive guide and a first-hand account of our maiden voyage on a Japanese ferry, filled with vivid descriptions and practical insights.
As we step into this enchanting journey, our video will unfold the entire boarding process, capturing the essence of the Japanese ferry experience. The highlight of our accommodation is the capsule rooms, a unique aspect of Japanese culture. We'll take you inside these compact yet ingeniously designed spaces, providing an intimate glimpse into what it's like to spend a night in these futuristic quarters.
The tour doesn't stop at our rooms. We'll take you on an extensive walk-through of the vessel, showcasing its various amenities and hidden gems. Expect to see the intricate details of the ferry's design, the communal areas, and the panoramic views it offers of the surrounding ocean and landscapes.
A pivotal part of our journey is the culinary experience. Our video includes an in-depth review of the onboard restaurant, where we'll sample a variety of dishes, giving you a taste of the local cuisine right on the high seas. We'll share our thoughts on the menu, the quality of food, and the overall dining experience.
A unique feature of this ferry that sets it apart is the onboard onsen/sento. We'll take you into this traditional Japanese bath, showcasing how you can spend part of your journey unwinding and soaking in the serene pools, a luxurious experience that blends relaxation with cultural immersion.
For those interested in undertaking this journey themselves, we provide detailed information on how to secure tickets for the Shin Nihonkai ferry. While the official ferry website (www.snf.jp/eng...) is exclusively in Japanese, we'll walk you through the process and alternative booking methods. We explore booking through Direct Ferries, which requires at least a 14-day advance reservation. Additionally, we discuss the possibility of purchasing tickets directly at the ferry terminal, though we caution against the risks of last-minute planning. Join us as we embark on this unforgettable journey, sharing every moment and tip to make your potential trip as magical as ours.

Keep up the good work as you have for years and yours, can't wait to watch all the other videos you posted
Thank you, Justin. Much appreciated! We hope you're enjoying the Japan videos.
The music is perfect!
thank you again.the typical japanese ferry is very good to experience while cruising
Seems... comfy :)
Haha, like a coffin or a capsule hotel depending on how you look at it! 😉
Hello to you both-
I would enjoy this myself.
Thanks for sharing
Interesting for sure! You seemed to enjoy it! I can’t wait to see where you will be going next!
Have fun
Sabrina 🇫🇷🇬🇧
I loved watching how giddy Samuel was! Audrey, you looked resigned to pivot from what you expected. It did seem fairly luxurious with a gym, sauna, restaurant, and amazing ocean views. Is it something people do for the novelty rather than as cheap way to go south?
Very cool adventure
Definitely learn the words for "evacuate" , "fire", and "emergency" so you can recognize them lol! Very important!
Their Shinkansens have English announcements so I would have expected it elsewhere.
Great video!
Never got to go on the ferry ride. The next time we travel to Otaru which we like , we will try to catch the ferry. Sounds like an all-around great experience. Hope you guys are doing ok.
Hugs🫂 and Kisses💋 from Harriet, Jim and Yuki
Thank you for the kind words week after week. It's always nice seeing you two here in the RUclips comments. I hope little Yuki is doing well and bringing you and Harriet lots of holiday cheer! 😊
Thanks for sharing your experience on a 16-hr ferry ride . Sounds like a cool , first time experience . Too bad the cabin space was so limited . Good tip to always plan ahead and be prepared to pivot if you're a last minute traveler .
Thanks for watching! The capsule cabin was interesting; it made us curious to do more ferry travels in the future.
Great video thank u 🇬🇧 ✌ xx
I am so jealous of your hanshin Tigers hat. When we were in Osaka the tigers were in the championship. All hats were sold out
Good evening!!!! AUDREY AND SAMUEL . BEAUTIFULL SHIP. - PALACE , MARINE 😄 .GREAT !!! . SEE YOU SOON !!! Or boths .BYE . 🎄.🤗
Sam though it was a Palace at Sea! He quite enjoyed it - especially the onsen. 😊
I think the sumo match was Kotonawaka vs Abi. Neat ferry ride. Maybe at the end of your Japan travels you could do a recap: what you liked and what’s different between the islands.
Audrey, Sam really needs a haircut and a shave plz😶🌫️ THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO, everything was spectacular!🙌🏼
Fascinating. Not at all like the statin Island Ferry. Of course you aren't on there nearly as long.
The ramen and pork look good.
It was! We really enjoyed the food on the ferry. 😊
Hola Audrey Samuel Daniel y familia.
fun! love to board on over night ship, someday.
i tryed very short trip ⛴️ once, ferry connecting Kurihama Yokosuka (Kanagawa Pref) and Kanaya in Futtsu (Chiba Pref) 40 minutes.

¥900 ~ The Tokyo Bay Ferry connects 'the Kanaya area in Futtsu City, Chiba Prefecture' and 'Kurihama in Yokosuka City Kanagawa Prefecture'.
panoramic views of Tokyo Bay, the vast ocean and even Mount Fuji during the 40-minute one-way journey.
That sounds like a nice journey! I bet the views were beautiful. 😊
Great video, super clean and exciting ferry, loving Sam’s enthusiasm for more long ferry rides, not sure Audrey’s face was agreeing 😂 Love seeing you back on your global travels ❤
バレちゃった!大阪~北九州も便利ですよ。ばらしちゃった。

Who did your background music? Not your usual stuff. A bit jarring.
Edited: What's the watch that Sam is wearing?
Can’t believe I’ve been watching you both for ten years now. What a fantastic journey.
A whole decade of adventures around the world with a camera in hand! Thanks for being a part of it. 😊
Hi. How much was the ticket?
It was around $100 USD per person, but it really depends on the type of cabin you select.
That is a good deal, transportation and lodging.
Ok, I think I can translate the announcement Audrey couldn't understand. The announcement said: "Audrey, you snored all night! It was terrible! OMG, the decibels you produced! The windows were about to break! We can imagine the agony poor Sam went through. Dude, divorce this woman, she's not worth it!" :) Great video, guys! 👍
😂🤣 In that case, I'm okay skipping the ship announcements!
Are you two married?
Yes, going on almost a decade!
Get a hair cut. Dude
Mind your business 🤡

hola audrey como estas
Can you use the Google Translate camera? Is it helpful? I find it pretty decent! :D
Nice to see a non-natives take on travel in Japan, These accommodations have always seemed like the way to go, pay a lot more for a suit and all your going to do is sleep in it. especially for a solo traveler
Awesome video ❤❤❤❤❤❤
When you have children, a beautiful girl with golden, God-like hair like Samuel or a boy handsome and strong like Audrey, will you take them on your travels?🥰
Unless Togo is playing babysitter 🐺🐾, where we go our future kiddos are comin'!
Wellcome to Niigata , I hope you would stay and enjoy some of the beautiful places in Niigata .
Thank you! We spent a few days exploring Niigata and quite enjoyed it. That will be our next video.
love
I would jump overboard if i to stay in a capsule. Omg
We've done a capsule hotel stay before, so it wasn't too bad. It feels more spacious than it looks!
