Microsoft actually have more experience with tablets than Apple does. Microsoft created the first Windows tablet in late 1990's with pen and everything...but it was too early, did not really catch on, until now. Surface Pro is in my opinion better built and more useful than the iPad overall. Especially when moving work between devices.
Actually the accidental line drawing is on the program. I have both Autodesk Sketchbook desktop version and a "windows 10" version; the desktop version actually does the accidental sketching and the 10 version has a feature that "turns on" pen mode and only reads digital pens.
Thanks for showcasing multiple devices and software. I was debating on a SP4 and the iPad Pro, and pulled the trigger on an iPad Pro yesterday. I must say watching your Procreate videos helped in my decision making. Keep up the good work!
I'm not sure if you know this but you can use the back of the pen as an eraser. I just learned that from watching a video earlier but thought that it could help. :) You are an incredible artist and I wish I had your talent!
I like how you defaulted to Procreates two-finger tap gesture to undo. I try it everywhere after getting used to Procreate and it's always a bummer that it doesn't work. :)
Do you think that rubbery tip of surface pen is annoying to the drawing experience ? Compared to iPad and Wacom cintiq..Iam a bit apprehensive about the pen tip texture otherwise surface pro is a complete desktop .a cheaper replacement for mobilestudio pro .please reply
the palm pickup isn't the device it's the program because it's 3rd party I assume... the surface has palm block and don't get me wrong I'm no pro artist but when I draw in freshpaint (the program it comes with...I know it's a novice program but it's good enough for me) it never registers my finger as a brush
Did you notice the screen giving way to pressure as you made semi-heavy strokes with the surface pen? To clarify what I mean, when you press on a screen too hard it typically has this 'wave'-like effect that ripples only where you touch. Did you experience this? (I work at a BestBuy store in the computer department, and I notice this on the model that we have on display. Kinda wondering if it was fixed in a revision or something..?) I'm seriously considering buying one of these for my portable workstation, so any feedback from you, or another viewer, would be heavily appreciated! Thanks in advance!
Hey Spencer, I was just curious how much better the drawing experience on the SP4 is compared to the SP3? Is the the pen more accurate, more responsive? Does it still jitter like crazy if you draw small and tiny? A little background, I am a fellow artist, and I have used my company issued SP3 to draw many of my comics, I then got a Cintiq companion (android version), I can say I love both but prefer the Cintiq every time. As you may also know, that Microsoft announced the Surface Studio, it is very nice! However, I had just recently purchased wacom's new tablet, The MobileStudio Pro (SO EXCITED!) With the MSP on it's way, I was contemplating on whether or not if/when the time came, if I should get a Desktop Cintiq (27QHD touch) or get the shiny new Surface Studio (as a desktop replacement in the future) The new Surface pen works on the Surface Studio and I have choice words for N-Trig. Thanks!
+Dominic Giles The lag is pretty much identical on both the iPad and SP4 you can see in Spencer's review. What you also find is some drawing software have brush stabilisation which tries to smooth out the line.. this usually makes the pen lag behind a little.
How did you do to have pressure in your pen? I have the surface pro 4 and the pressure of the pen only works in one note. I tried lots of things but it doesn't work :(
spencer. can this tablet or any other one allow u to upload a drawing or pencil drawing so u can trace over it ? im a tat artist w a lot of drawings , so instead of completely redrawing from scratch was wondering if can be done. im new to the illustrator world
i have a Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 model, not satisfied.. I can't use the best programs, it's top small and the feeling isn't there. i really miss the control, precision and tactile feedback that paper and pencil/brush give.
Depends on what else you want to do besides draw/paint. If drawing or painting is all you want to do I recommend the iPad pro. If you want to do more than that, I recommend the surface pro or cintiq companion or something even like a Lenovo yoga
do you think it's good enough ? I need to change my computer (a 7 year old imac... I know) but I have a cintiq 13hd (no touch). Is the SP4 pen still good (heard its not as good as on a cintiq, but is it tat far away ? saw the surface studio and for the 1st time in 15 years, considering switching bac to a pc... what's your take on that ? Also i've tested the best interactive pen ever, it's called.... a pen, the sensitivity and pressure is amazing, you have a broad range of other pencils and brushes and papers and it's totally HD ;) (what can't joke a bit ?)
s3lfFish If anything, you can do rough drawings/paintings on the SP4. And when you want to take a drawing or painting a bit more serious, then just connected it to your Cintiq 13 hd. It's still a laptop with windows 10 after all. Just make sure your SP4 has at least 8gb of ram; otherwise, you will experience lag when using art software like adobe programs.
Joe Валенсия thanks, but I need a desktop not a laptop. Also i'm too used to apple (OS, and would need to relearn to work on windows while having to move a lot of back up drives that runs only for macs.. ) and I think the surface studio is still in a beta version, to switch for a product that seems amazing but still not finished. I'll wait for the second one to switch completely to a pc, but so far, almost perfect. the most exciting computer for designers in decades and probably the futur of computers for all (touch screening and getting rid of the keyboard and the mouse..)
Great Channel and impressive tutorials .. thank you.. On another topic, any thoughts on extending Surface Pro 4 battery life? am desperate looking for powerbanks and hoping for power keyboards !! thx :)
hi, is price a concern? if not www.amazon.com/Qi-infinity-Upgraded-Powerbank-Surface-MacBook/dp/B0183UJ2SY is a great buy, a bit expensive for a powerbank but my experience and experience from people I know is only great. It comes with a charger that charges it fully in less than 4 hours. It also charges over USB but its oer 3x the time so it is for me the right balance of mobility features and capacity. I often leave my surface charging on the bagpack and it doesnt get any warm or anything and is allways ready to go
Pinch to zoom was giving you problems because you hold your thumb sideways and hit the screen with your fingernail/callus and not the good part of your finger. It's a screen you have to be deliberate
I also am looking for one as well around the same price but i'm in £, i have been thinking of this one my friend. Please don't take my word for it, personally i feel it is more than adequate however i haven't bought any in the past, but it is an idea, seeing has no one has responded ill show you what i have been looking at. www.amazon.com/Huion-Monitor-Inches-Display-Resolution/dp/B00L9QN3LW/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1470765273&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=Huion+Pen+Monitor+21.5%E2%80%9D+Pen+Display+Tablet+Monitor+with+IPS+Panel+HD+Resolution+GT-220
I think you did a good job demonstrating how a Microsoft surface pro 4 works. I just wish that you would stop putting the surface pro 4 down. It works just as good as the iPad pro and the Wacom tablets. Sure it has a few faults and short Cummings that can be and I'm sure will soon be corrected, but don't all tablets including the iPad pro and the Wacom tablets have some of the same faults and short comings? You just have to give the Microsoft surface pro 4 tablet a fair chance. But hands down, it's a very good tablet, and we'll worth every penny spent on it. I think the iPad pro and the apple pencil is an OK product, but I just think that you apple iPad fans just give it a little too much credit, especially when you're comparing it to the Microsoft surface pro 4. Like I said, the Microsoft surface pro 4 is as good as an art pad as the IPad pro, and any other digital art pad. But, that's all I want to say.
This thing looks really annoying when you compare it to the seamless work on iPad in your other videos. I don't understand how can you be so calm - windows machines usually drive me crazy in less then 5 minutes:)

+Jamal Davis (Billy Bee) I don't really think it's fair to call someone out for favoring the iPad Pro and then favoring the Surface Pro 4 the way you do. Even though I agree that the Surface Pro 4 is by far the better allround product compared to the iPad Pro, it really is quite telling how many artists have grown to love the more natural drawing experience of the iPad Pro, especially now that there is more and more great software to take advantage of the hardware. It's kind of like that with all Apple product: Apple is typically late to the party with new features, but over time, they prove themselves to be the best at implementing those features, and receive the most developer support. Yes, the Surface Pro 4 can run desktop apps. But with all those glorious features found in Manga Studio, Adobe Illustrator or Sketchbook Pro, it seems that Procreate and other specialized iOS apps offer the more intuitive "pencil/pen on paper" drawing experience, more natural shading and better lines than the Surface Pro 4 does. Thus being the tablet that artists grab more often for freehand drawing. That's not to sell the Surface Pro 4 short in any way. I'm not an artist, so the pen experience is a bonus, not a selling point for me, and I think the Surface Pro 4 is the better choice for most people (even though I traded mine in for a Vaio Z Canvas). Having said that, now that there is more software optimized for the hardware, the iPad Pro is definitely a very solid option for artists looking for a secondary device.
Might want to add the specifications of the device considering there are multiple models of the SP4 Pro.

Thanks for making videos on creating art on the Surface Pro 4!
Watching this makes me very glad to have an iPad Pro, your videos are excellent, I look forward to seeing a new sketch each day.
Actually the accidental line drawing is on the program. I have both Autodesk Sketchbook desktop version and a "windows 10" version; the desktop version actually does the accidental sketching and the 10 version has a feature that "turns on" pen mode and only reads digital pens.
The surface has a kickstand to keep it up!
This video makes me want one even more :)
Thanks for showcasing multiple devices and software. I was debating on a SP4 and the iPad Pro, and pulled the trigger on an iPad Pro yesterday. I must say watching your Procreate videos helped in my decision making. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for showing us another app and platform. It really does demonstrate how great the iPad is and how much better procreate is. 👍
I'm not sure if you know this but you can use the back of the pen as an eraser. I just learned that from watching a video earlier but thought that it could help. :) You are an incredible artist and I wish I had your talent!

Ha funny you caught that.
Wish I could draw like that. awsome!
Great demo, thankyou! Very tempted in getting a SP4!
You need to use the skechbook app on the marktplace much better for drawing on the surface
+Kucukakyuz TV Who is the author? Is it just called Sketchbook?
+Leowulf™ yes, is also from autodesk
You probably know this by now, but you can move the task bar to the top which keeps it out of the way of your hand.
my mind just exploded. i can´t draw and thought this was very impressive (despite the few glitches because you are not used to the device).
Really good, and I was wondering how much the Surface Pro 4 is
+Cloudy Cam they don't start at 1200
They start at $899 bro
i wish i had your powers.
Spence we miss u!!!!!!!! (thumbs up)
Do you think that rubbery tip of surface pen is annoying to the drawing experience ? Compared to iPad and Wacom cintiq..Iam a bit apprehensive about the pen tip texture otherwise surface pro is a complete desktop .a cheaper replacement for mobilestudio pro .please reply
Great video man
love your videos, and the way you break stuff down. i wonder doesn't the surface pro have palm rejection?
Great as usual.
Autodesk Sketch looks like a great product. Great Review. I think that product has a subscription fee.
the palm pickup isn't the device it's the program because it's 3rd party I assume... the surface has palm block and don't get me wrong I'm no pro artist but when I draw in freshpaint (the program it comes with...I know it's a novice program but it's good enough for me) it never registers my finger as a brush
Yup, the display also knows if you are using fingers or pen, it knows the difference.
Marijn Donders. exactly...like no bias whatsoever I'm just THAT impressed btw
I use a microfiber cloth under my palm on the surface pro 3.
Did you notice the screen giving way to pressure as you made semi-heavy strokes with the surface pen? For some reason the touch controls lock up from time to time. I use a bluetooth keyboard or my Razer Tartarus for quick keys.
For drawing better i take wacom cintiq or microsoft surface 4?
Never tried Ntrig... but most ppl (Including me), if it's about "drawing", wacom is the beast...
@spencer,.. iPad pro pencil or surface pro 4 pen? Which for drawing? Which for taking notes (considering the apps you use on both platforms). Thx!
Hey Spencer, I was just curious how much better the drawing experience on the SP4 is compared to the SP3? Is the the pen more accurate, more responsive? Does it still jitter like crazy if you draw small and tiny?

Would the surface pro 4 run z brush ? And how much ram would be good to get for using these kinda programs ?
not sure if its the software of the surface pro but it feels really laggy.... Is that the video? Doesn't seem as responsive as the centiq or iPad Pro.

I bought sketch abeles saw a video on it it is a mess cannot get a fresh sheet have you worked with it
Do you need internet to open the app or does it come like with the app
do I have to get the pro version for horizon line'
How do u make lines so perfect o-o
Great video. What are the specs on the surface pro you're using?

what is d software he using for sketching??
Hi Spencer, are you still getting the tapering affect everyones getting with the surface pro 4 pen?
hi spencer, i'm starting out with digital painting/drawing/designing etc. What is the best electronic device for this purpose in your opinion?
i have a Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 model, not satisfied.. I can't use the best programs, it's top small and the feeling isn't there. i really miss the control, precision and tactile feedback that paper and pencil/brush give.

I'm really into drawing too and i just got a Surface Pro 4. Just curious but what sofware are you drawing on/with?
im sure there is a setting to disable hand drawing
Pinch to zoom was giving you problems because you hold your thumb sideways and hit the screen with your fingernail/callus and not the good part of your finger. It's a screen you have to be deliberate
Quality drawing though, good video
hats off good job.
Hello we sales new surface pen, it is cheaper than original pen, but function is same. could you help to make review on RUclips?
Again a nice video! Could you do a boogie board demonstration? I'm thinking of getting the boogie board since your fb post myself!
Woah, why don't you post more often?
I got 1000 dollars, want to buy a drawing machine, should I buy this?
(im new to drawing)

Focused Racoon That tablet does seem to be ok, but i don't know i do need a second opinion but atleast its a choice you have.
This isn't a drawing machine, it's a laptop, but yes it is good to draw on
good job
Wheelchair sketch please
Every day :-)
Yes ..... until u do it 😊😊
+Esmael Elshkmak hahaha that's the spirit!
hillarious
thank you for this video men. PLease make more videos about this.
very good
As good as Surface Pro 3, still using it now...
Nice video mate! maybe you can let me know what you think about my drawing in my last video..
I’m here because I Just got the surface pro 9 and learning digital art
I just want to be like u....!!
lol, seems like I dont need wacom any more
