I enjoy Dylan's railway adventures so much that this channel has now become a indispensable part of my Friday evening entertainment. Long may it continue!
Yes same love it, i have to book a railway journey next time im in Europe
@@Traveltheme706 educational and amusing - love the ref to the hand drier
Yep I would like to see the other train going to Prague.
A native of Košice here - at 10:15, Dylan talks about a change of locomotive. That is because the railway between Košice and Zvolen has not been electrified and hence a diesel locomotive is needed. I am no expert, but I believe this is mainly due to the sparse usage of the southern route, as most trains on the heading west use the northern route (which goes around the very scenic High Tatras). I decided to google a bit and in 2020, the Slovak Ministry of Transport said the reconstruction of the southern route was not a priority at that moment.
Sparse usage of the southern route (excluding the first half) is because of the government actively giving the middle finger to local trains (between Jesenské and Moldava n/ Bodvou) which I think is ridiculous for a country in the EU
10:07 Those "car-trains" are honestly such a great concept, it makes car travellers change to the train, what a great idea.
Yes, why not review the Prague sleeper... and why not in a seat, I'd love to know your thoughts by the end of the journey! :)
Used to have those in the UK called MotorRail sadly now defunct. May be a good idea to re intoduce them to transport electric vehicles for holiday makers to travel those longer distances.
This has such a spy thriller vibe.
They are of Cold War vintage, only with Schengen there are fewer border guards demanding papers at 2am.
I love that you now speak on the videos. I love your channel!
Thanks!
3:14 they were indeed built in the late 70s, with few ones made as late as 1985 originally for ČSD (Czechoslovak State Railways), kept under ŽSR after the breakup of Czechoslovakia. ŽSR isn't necessarily ZSSK, it's just that ŽSR was in charge of both infrastructure and transport up until 2005, when the ZSSK was created. Today, ŽSR is in charge of railway infrastructure and ZSSK is in charge of passenger transport. (There's also ZSSK Cargo, which handles freight trains.)
_edit: we have 2 types of WLABee coaches in Slovakia, I have mistaken them for the newer series originally built for Russia. The information should now be correct._
The view of the station at night takes me back to my intermittent travelling around Europe adventures of 2010 - 2017. There's something thrilling, slightly mysterious and maybe almost romantic about arriving at a largely deserted station in a foreign country, getting on a train to a new destination, wondering what you will find when you get there and who you may meet on the way. Work is getting in the way at the moment, not to mention the C-flu, but I dearly hope, when possible, to be able to do this sort of thing again. So many places to see, so little time in a single life... Take care, Dylan - I admire your work ethic and your way of life very much indeed. You'll have a massive fund of stories to tell when you are older, mate!
You can technically "lock" the compartment from the outside, you'll just need a 4-sided railway key, which is extremely easy to get. :D
Love the simplicity of your reviews, good information for those thinking about the same journey, brilliant entertainment for those of us enjoying from our armchairs. Thank you.
Dylan, I really enjoy all of your reviews. Please keep up the good work!
I really enjoy Dylan's adventures. The beautiful stations and 🚆. Can't wait to travel again.
Took one of these in 2018 from Košice to Bratislava. It was only £50 for a single cabin with breakfast included and it was absolutely amazing considering the price.
"I needn't worry about having to share my cabin because there isn't another human being in a twelve mile radius."
You can see Dylan is so authentic, when we can see that he starts with his wireless headphones, meaning that he just finished spending (several hours/some time) listening to music in the street.
Great video as always. Thanks Dylan. Really retro. Love the loco at the end.
Nothing beats a good sleeper train 💫 I also love it when you can open the windows like that - so dreamy
Reminded me of the sleeper compartments I used in the70s going to Scotland and Cornwall basic but comfortable. It looked as though you were the only passenger on the train! Good video.
Probably there are more passengers from Kosice. Presov is a small town near the Polish border. Although passengers travelling from Kosice to Bratislava tend to use the faster sleeper train Rychlik Zemplín from Humenné to Bratislava
Great video, thank you very much! You are opening my eyes to the wonders of sleeper travel in Europe. I had no idea there were so many services around.
Great ride! There's a romance and a touch of mystique about railway stations at night, especially the smaller ones. Always reminds me of my travels on steam-hailed trains in South Africa in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Never slept better than in those old coaches!
So much nostalgia! I travelled in one of these sleepers between Copenhagen and East Berlin in the late 80's, where they were operated by Mitropa. The interior was almost completely identical except for the bed sheets. It annoys me to this day that I did not have a video camera to document that trip. Unlike yours though, it was not the most pleasent trip. First the ferry shunting on the Danish side, which almost knocked you out of bed. Then 3 hours later on the german side, you were woken up in the middle of the night by DDR border guards with machine guns who wanted to take as much time as possible going through your luggage. Luckily people today don't need to go through the same hassle as we did back then =D
Really enjoyed the video x one of the best you’ve done
Wonderful train journey as usual. You ask our opinions but since I live where the trains a re so few I thing all of them are wonderul. As far as I remember the last time I travelled on s slepper train must have ben when I was 5 o six years of age. Thank you again for taking me all over tplaces. Yours ever. William Grant (Willie)
Thank you🌼
I enjoy seeing journeys on sleeper trains from any country, especially during summer and springtime when we get to see some scenery.
You are smashing it Lad. So much better this way.
I enjoy watching all your vids. even if I'm never liable to travel on half of them. Thks.
Off topic but a 5 years or so back I got an evening train from Budapest to Bratislava hl, nice journey until we got about 5 mins from our destination and the pantograph got ripped off the locomotive, massive flash, the whole thing banged along our carriage roof, and we screeched to a halt. 3 hours later we got towed to the station once they'd made the electricals safe. By this time a lot of locals had opened the doors and walked it. At the station everything had basically fused so no trains at all and knee deep in people. Can't wait to go back though I loved the country and its people :)
This was a great sleeper train video. I, too, like the older trains. I feel like I am transported back to days gone by. It would be great to see a review of the sleeper/auto train to Praha! I would be interested to see if the meal service is different for the longer journey. Cheers!
Thank you for the video, the train looks cool.
The sleeper trains are my favourite of Dylan’s reviews. I’ve never untaken a sleeper journey and it’s just great to live vicariously through the fearless traveller himself!
Perhaps you could take a sleeper trip?
Love your videos
Great report, I couldn’t help feeling the running sound of train would have kept me awake.
Not really, it is so monotonous it makes you sleep like lullaby
Great video again Dylan
Beautiful Scene , Very nice. explanation & information Thanks
Great video !!
I would like to see the other train going to Prague. I always enjoy your videos they give me so many ideas for places to visit.
Interesting reports. Now retired, I'd like to make a few of these myself. Looking forward to more.
A nice, slow ride.
Nice video . Thanks
I always watch and love your vids. Since you asked though, I have to say that the sleeper looked, pokey, tired and not very palatable. The decor of the corridors looked great.
Just love your sleeper reports Dylan, just wish this pandemic was over so normal travel could begin again
great video dylan mate
nice video. the auto tracks on the other train are a pretty useful invention actually.
Hey Dylan awesome video dude
Krása super jsem rád že jezdíš i Slovenkým vlakem měl jsi krásné staré lůžkové kupé a táhla tě nejlepší lokomotiva !!!!!
For those of us who do not speak czech here it is translated = Beauty super I'm glad you also ride the Slovak train you had a beautiful old bed coupe and you were pulled by the best locomotive !!!!!
@@carlharris2808 Yes translated is good lokomotive 150 is super! 🚈
@@TrainSpotter_Vrsovicak ale toto je lokomotiva řady 350. But this is loco 350.
Nice review, I like these sleeping trains :). I would love to go on one at some point in the future.
Though as you quite rightly pointed out, train travel in the UK is ridiculously expensive!
Nice trip. Yes to the sleeper to Prague..
I really really hope I can catch this train this summer. I recently saw a train configuation chart though where it says that both sleeper carriages are now supposed to be air-conditioned, which I hope not, as I would like to have openable windows, like the one in the video!
Thanks for the video btw :D
Brilliant video as usual Dylan 🙌 it does make you wonder about the crime with all that security and even locking the train coaches off wow 😮
Thanks!
I love your videos Dylan and thanks so much for posting. I love Slovakia and would love to take a sleeper there, but I must say that this journey and overall vibe made me feel sad somehow. It’s like the train that time (and other passengers) forgot. Is it really your best ever experience?
Nice one.
Hi Dylan how are you . this old carriage reminds me of the old Sydney express years ago this is before they upgraded the trains . these cars were comfortable allthough they rocked around abit . still it was good to see something old again take care buddy see ya
another nice video,,,
... 1975 locomotive and still working fine, that's cool. Good review Dylan, good for the narration...! 👍
There are used locomotives even from the 60's, tho mostly in cargo transport nowadays. In most of the cases it's not from a lack of funds but because they are still holding up and/or the maintance is cheaper than buying a new one.
@@pavelcerny9803 Magnificent use of resources, good.👍 Thanks for the comment
@@nivardofloresperez1169 If you'd be interested even more there's a 1 hour video of one of the most used corridors in the Czech Republic leading to Poland and Slovakia. You can see modern trains, renovated trains from the 80's, 70's and also some freight trains from the 60's which used to haul passanger coaches in their prime years. The most common companies are ČD, ČD Cargo, ZSSK and RegioJet

@@pavelcerny9803 Hey thanks for the info, I'll check it out in the meantime.
great video
It's a nice sleeper ! 👍
Good value.
Nice
Well Ammendorf coaches will stay retro forever. Nevertheless I'm glad to see such a video in the "high-tech" times. Any intentions to ride Slovakia by suburban trains?
Very enjoyable and relaxing video. I wonder how the crew get into the cabin in the event of an emergency? Lovely old carriages, very good. Looks like they refurbished the WC room nicely but did not modernise the toilet that looks like it is the type that discharges onto the tracks and has little or no water in the bowl 9:31
This kind of doors is also into sleepers of CFR Călători that you already reviewed.
Same as what "trainlagged" said below.
That looked like a great train trip. To bad you couldn't sleep in for another hour or so...
Boa viagem Dylans lindo trein gostei
portuguese translated = Good trip Dylans beautiful train I liked
You should do a Pullman service on GWR
Just a small remark: Š is pronounced as an English [sh], so it's [Preshov] and [Shkoda].
The same is true for Č [ch] Ž [zh] and CH [h as in heart or heat].
Czech Ř is pronounced as a very short [rzh].
"Ch" is not "h". "Ch" doesn't exist in english. Closest equivalents to Slovak "ch" are for example Russian and Greek "X" which are pronounced the same as Slovak "ch". When transliterating "ch" or "x" to english "kh" is often used as in "khan" . (for english speakers: "khan" is not pronounced as "kan" but as "xan" with that distinct khhhh throatly sound.
I finaly remembered who Dylan reminds me off - Kevin Turvey 😉
Old School ! :-)
Great report Dylan, just one question - security on the train was ok? When you went for a wander did you feel nervous about leaving all your stuff in the compartment when you couldn’t lock it from the outside? I’ve heard some unfortunate stories about security on sleeper trains.
I would take my valuables with me, in my luggage I would just have clothes
Atleast the Euronight Prague - Humenné has security guards and even after that I personally don't have to worry, because i got a thing called "klička". It is a railway tool used to lock windows, doors, panels for central coach control, etc. Now they are even starting to use keycards for the individual compartments, so with that, you can feel safer.
two things.. the lower bedding was smaller than the upper berth. That lower bed wouldn' t fit me and upper berth I couldn't climb if I dare. 2nd, do cover that auto train you saw. Compare it with amtrak auto train in USA.
I would love to go on this train.
I suspect the sponge in the amenity kit was meant to be for giving leather shoes a quick polish.
The other sleeping train is probably EuroNight "Slovakia" to Prague. There are also sleeping trains from Vienna to West Austria and Germany on which you can travel your car too (Autozüge).
You could improve your Slovak pronounciation
Great trip, that's 7 days Croissant, looks like this snack sold worldwide, in My Country, some Premium Overnight Long Distance Bus give this as complementary on board snack for every passenger. Yes, you should try the Train with Auto Carrier on it
Oh I traveled by this train! Btw it was terminating in Bratislava hlavna stanica decades before 6am and only recently they extended it to Nove Mesto to give more time to sleep. That station is secondary and there is no other reason as you can reach it quicker by trams.
The main reason is the cleaning facility and maintenance at the Bratislava Nové mesto station.
A few years ago, as You mentioned, the train terminated at the main station, but got switched to the Nové mesto station as switching train after the loco run-around.
Best Sleeper Journey!? But you've taken the new Caledonian Sleeper!
🤔😉😅
To be fair, the old Caley sleeper was class...
I was hoping to go interrailing again this year but sadly looks unlikely.
Luckily we'll have these vids🙂
like ~super masterpiece! goodbye!- :)
10:10 yes 👍
I would also opt for solo occupancy. It's worth the money to get a good night's sleep.
Is it worth doing a train travel trip in Ireland ..? I've driven over a lot of it, but never taken a train. Thks
I like your videos, just a tiny linguistic detail - I appreciate the effort to pronounce the city names in slavic countries but you still have some work to do in that area. 😉👍
Dylan what football team do u support and can u do the Norwich Liverpool route
Correction: "Š" is pronounced like english "sh". So it's "Preshov", "Koshitse". "C" in Slovak is pronounced as "TS" like in "Tsunami or Tsushima".
Yes please with the car carrge
I wonder if that service could be extended to Wien via Petržalka - it'd need a Vectron rather than a 350 though.
Good advice on getting to the station, but I thought the design was more stark modernist rather than art deco. The compartments are clearly very dated - and missing a plug in the sink. The chain was there but nothing else. The top bunks appeared wider than the lower ones - or was that my imagination? Good prices though, and some nice shots as you hung out of the window.
it seems that the top bunk is indeed wider, as on the bottom one a good few centimeters are taken by the back rest used for daytime configuration. I've seen simmilar arrangement on couchettes here in Poland.
I live in Slovakia and I´ve always wanted to try one of these sleeper trains. How would you describe your sleeping experience? Was the berth quiet enough? Wasn´t there too much vibration from the wheels? Did you feel well rested?
13:09
The way overnight train travel is meant to be.
Those sheets! They look as if they got them from a charity shop. Otherwise, it looked OK. The paper towels in the loo, were obviously missing. Did they provide towels in the compartment?
It's pronounced "Pre-show" and "Kosh-itse". ;-) I'm surprised to see a video from you where you use your own voiceover. :-)
3:41 top right corner xD
The night trip interestingly focused everything on the train itself since there was no scenery. I don't get having triple locks inside but no way to lock your room from outside. This means every time you leave your room, where all of your belongings are, it's open to anyone entering. I suppose the entire car being locked off cuts down on possible thieves. That said, it seemed like a comfortable trip.
Guarantee it’s very cold where you are. And as it’s winter it gets very dark quite early.
Perhaps you could find some alternatives to “you will find.....”. It starts to grate after a while.
A hello from Slovakia. Thanks for stopping by! People are god awful in here btw :|
The cover and matching pillowcase surprised me. They seemed a little fancy to me since all your other overnight travel bedding have been white. Also, didn’t think you would fit the bed, it looked so narrow. Well, I’m glad you liked the room. Btw, $55 for overnight one way? That probably would have cost that much on Amtrak if I rode on the roof of the train. According to my research from Boston, MA to Chicago, IL one way, it would cost $402. Amtrak, on January 12, 2021 for one Roomette, one traveler was $99 and for two travelers $149. And as with most travel, the earlier you book, the better price you get. See you Monday, and sure if that car pulling train is different, let’s have a review.
That is 5x longer distance 😜 plus average salary in 2021 in usd is about 16k/year brutto which gives about 800€ or 960usd/month take home
Do you ever get homesick when you travel Dylan?
Second, nice
Enjoyed your trip report Dylan. But … no air con, plug socket inoperative , WC no hand dryer, and three locks on the door??? 🧐. So NOT happening! 🤣
The lack of proper WC is a dissapointment but i think many people use the sink in order to take a piss.
Greetings from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil! I really enjoyed this video, as always with great quality. However, if it were in Brazil I would not walk alone in a deserted place. Security is definitely not one of the most representative items in my country. Currently not even my wife and I leave the house with our cell phones, because they are the "objects of desire" of thieves due to the banking apps and the fact that they also sell cell phones for negligible values for the purchase of drugs and/or supply the illegal market for cell phones and their parts. Stolen cell phones are sold on the Brazilian streets by street vendors at daylight. For those who want to tour in Brazil, just do it with great care. Stay tuned with your cell phones and video cameras.
