    The statue at 1:10 is a 19th century sculpture of the Lion of St Mark, which originally stood in the Südbahnhof in Vienna, and was a symbol of the rail connection to Venice (the Lion being itself a Venetian icon). It was re-sited in the new station when it opened.

  • @timbounds7190

    I may be old fashioned, but I'm not a fan of many new stations which seem to be basically shopping malls, with railway platforms that are hidden away somewhere. I like my stations to look like stations!

    • @ThomasJM
      @ThomasJM 2 года назад +11

      Me too unfortunately stations have to make money from other sources as well now besides train operations.

      I personally like it. stations attract weird characters everywhere and if they have shops and other services, things are better mantained, safer and more human imo. And I like it when I can buy some food or a book before I take the train. Or just simply have some entertainment if I need to wait for a longer period. it can get weird at the old school stations.

    • @lewis72
      @lewis72 2 года назад

      I agree.
      I've been to this station many times and have mixed feelings about it.
      It's good from a passenger point of view who just wants to get from A to B and needs the facilities.
      It's also good if you're on a 2 week travelling holiday and you need to buy some warm socks as didn't bring them with you.
      However, it does miss a sense of occasion that a grand railway station will bring, like Budapest Keleti.
      Vienna Hauptbahnhof replaced Südbahnhof, which was nearby (two main line tracks met at right-angles, so no through trains were possible. Hauptbahnhof was built on the curve that joined the two)

    The recline of the seats was rather amazing, like a first class jet seat on a long flight. The sushi was a real bargain; here in San Francisco that would be about 11 Eu. The winged lion at the beginning was taken from the roof of one of Vienna's 19th century stations to preserve it in a railway station context. Nice trip.

    • @ap94131

      You can find sushi here for 11 Eu? Last time I had sushi in a restaurant it was 23 Eu.

      @@ap94131 I was referring to the price of grocery store sushi, which would be comparable to train sushi. At a real sushi restaurant here the average would be $30 (27 Eu) for lunch and more for dinner.

      This was confirmed in the documentary about the route of the Orient Express, one of the original series of BBC Great train journeys of the World broadcast back in the late 1970s, early 1980s. Two scenes from this particular film have stuck in my mind ever since. The first was that passengers were "invited" to make a currency exchange at Hegyeshalom and the second, a more disturbing one, concerned the arrival of the Chopin Express into Vienna. This train was known as the immigrant train as it brought refugees fleeing the Soviet Union. Half an hour or so before the train arrived armed soldiers would line the platforms in readiness, then watch over the unfortunates as they disembarked. Thankfully things have moved on.

    "That thing" is a Markuslöwe. Originally, eight such lions were created by the sculptor Josef Leimer in 1873 for the roof of Vienna’s second southern train station. These Lions of Saint Marcus were a symbol for the established train connection from Vienna to Venice. Six of the eight winged stone lions were destroyed in World War II, the second of the two surviving lions is now in the park of Laxenburg Palace (“Schloss Laxenburg”). The new central train station of Vienna (“Hauptbahnhof Wien”) replaced the old southern train station. When the old station was destroyed the lion was removed and refurbished. On September 29, 2014, it was placed at the main entrance of the new train station; for conservation reasons inside the hall.

    Booked the same route in advance with reverse itinerary from Budapest-Deli to Wien Hbf. Total cost was 281 CZF or $12 USD for business class seats. Pretty damn sweet considering OBB's railjet is around $85 for a first class seat with additional fee for business class for the same route. Thanks for the pointer with this video.

      Well, reporting back on this booking. For the price and class, it's hard to beat. But the air conditioning on my carriage was broken so everyone was roasting in over 35C temperature and there was nothing the crew could do about it. So that was a fairly miserable 3 hour train ride mainly because it was so damn hot inside the carriage. So I will have to think twice about booking RegioJet ever again in the future.

    I was very shocked & surprised by the first railway station. It looks more like an airport than a train station. I'd like to have a wander around. You were living the life in your own train compartment. How luxurious. I can't imagine first class being any better. In fact the whole train seemed very nice & well kept. Even the aisles were spacious. The price was well worth it considering you had a meal & drinks. Your journey was a tale of 2 cities. You started out in the lovely & modern. Then you ended up in the dark & seedy. I was surprised by the graffiti & time worn station that was Budapest.

    This makes the UK's "1st Class" services - particularly on the trains I've seen - rather poor.

      Yes, it's amazing how competition did not lower prices much in the UK...

    11:40 To think that this was once a TEE coach. 50 years ago people paid a fortune to ride in one of these, and today they make up the lowest class on a low-cost carrier.

    It's weird because even though I once visited Vienna Train station I have no memory of it.

    You were lucky. Last summer I wanted to travel with this company but didn't managed to because they don't accept Electronic Interrail Pass don't know why ?

    • @TorIverWilhelmsen
      @TorIverWilhelmsen 2 года назад +2

      Usually Interrail is a ticket based on agreement between FIP members, which mostly will be the national operators (plus a few more depending on country), even when they cross into other countries (like if you take the Czech CD or Austrian ÖBB trains into Hungary).
      Here in Norway, I think the government insisted that the new operators GoAhead Nordic and SJ should honour interrail as part of their contracts, like Vy (formerly NSB, which used to have a monopoly) do.

    "Whatever the heck this thing is" is a statue that was on the former Südbahnhof that this station replaced.
    There is a video on that here:

    8:36 I prefer demi sec from Bohemia Sekt with a black label. Becherovka is also popular. They are luxurious and tasty alcoholic beverages from the Czech Republic.

    This week's question: Dylan, do you ever find yourself wanting to take a trip for a second time? Not because of scenery etc, but due to thinking "if I knew then what I do now"?

    • @DylansTravelReports

      Not often, maybe if there was a lot of nice food or scenery involved though.
