      Used to have those in the UK called MotorRail sadly now defunct. May be a good idea to re intoduce them to transport electric vehicles for holiday makers to travel those longer distances.

    A native of Košice here - at 10:15, Dylan talks about a change of locomotive. That is because the railway between Košice and Zvolen has not been electrified and hence a diesel locomotive is needed. I am no expert, but I believe this is mainly due to the sparse usage of the southern route, as most trains on the heading west use the northern route (which goes around the very scenic High Tatras). I decided to google a bit and in 2020, the Slovak Ministry of Transport said the reconstruction of the southern route was not a priority at that moment.

    • @CreatorPolar
      @CreatorPolar Год назад

      Sparse usage of the southern route (excluding the first half) is because of the government actively giving the middle finger to local trains (between Jesenské and Moldava n/ Bodvou) which I think is ridiculous for a country in the EU

    The view of the station at night takes me back to my intermittent travelling around Europe adventures of 2010 - 2017. There's something thrilling, slightly mysterious and maybe almost romantic about arriving at a largely deserted station in a foreign country, getting on a train to a new destination, wondering what you will find when you get there and who you may meet on the way. Work is getting in the way at the moment, not to mention the C-flu, but I dearly hope, when possible, to be able to do this sort of thing again. So many places to see, so little time in a single life... Take care, Dylan - I admire your work ethic and your way of life very much indeed. You'll have a massive fund of stories to tell when you are older, mate!

    3:14 they were indeed built in the late 70s, with few ones made as late as 1985 originally for ČSD (Czechoslovak State Railways), kept under ŽSR after the breakup of Czechoslovakia. ŽSR isn't necessarily ZSSK, it's just that ŽSR was in charge of both infrastructure and transport up until 2005, when the ZSSK was created. Today, ŽSR is in charge of railway infrastructure and ZSSK is in charge of passenger transport. (There's also ZSSK Cargo, which handles freight trains.)
    _edit: we have 2 types of WLABee coaches in Slovakia, I have mistaken them for the newer series originally built for Russia. The information should now be correct._

    So much nostalgia! I travelled in one of these sleepers between Copenhagen and East Berlin in the late 80's, where they were operated by Mitropa. The interior was almost completely identical except for the bed sheets. It annoys me to this day that I did not have a video camera to document that trip. Unlike yours though, it was not the most pleasent trip. First the ferry shunting on the Danish side, which almost knocked you out of bed. Then 3 hours later on the german side, you were woken up in the middle of the night by DDR border guards with machine guns who wanted to take as much time as possible going through your luggage. Luckily people today don't need to go through the same hassle as we did back then =D

    Off topic but a 5 years or so back I got an evening train from Budapest to Bratislava hl, nice journey until we got about 5 mins from our destination and the pantograph got ripped off the locomotive, massive flash, the whole thing banged along our carriage roof, and we screeched to a halt. 3 hours later we got towed to the station once they'd made the electricals safe. By this time a lot of locals had opened the doors and walked it. At the station everything had basically fused so no trains at all and knee deep in people. Can't wait to go back though I loved the country and its people :)

When transliterating "ch" or "x" to english "kh" is often used as in "khan" . (for english speakers: "khan" is not pronounced as "kan" but as "xan" with that distinct khhhh throatly sound.

    Thanks for such a great report of a great trip! It’s worth noting that Slovakia, with a population of just under 5.5 million and a “purchasing power parity” GDP of about $37K (70th in the world), has such superior railway stations and trains. For both Prešov (population about 87,000) and Bratislava (pop. about 475,000), their stations are far better than those of any city of comparable size in North America, or indeed, the Americas. They are clean, modern, and have numerous shops. Even the tunnels leading to the tracks are clean and well-lighted, NOT urine-stained from homeless populations! And the trains themselves, even the older ones, are likewise quite nice. The USA, in particular, should “stop pleading poverty” and clean up its local and national railway system!

    Good advice on getting to the station, but I thought the design was more stark modernist rather than art deco. The compartments are clearly very dated - and missing a plug in the sink. The chain was there but nothing else. The top bunks appeared wider than the lower ones - or was that my imagination? Good prices though, and some nice shots as you hung out of the window.

Security is definitely not one of the most representative items in my country. Currently not even my wife and I leave the house with our cell phones, because they are the "objects of desire" of thieves due to the banking apps and the fact that they also sell cell phones for negligible values for the purchase of drugs and/or supply the illegal market for cell phones and their parts. Stolen cell phones are sold on the Brazilian streets by street vendors at daylight. For those who want to tour in Brazil, just do it with great care. Stay tuned with your cell phones and video cameras.

    Great trip, that's 7 days Croissant, looks like this snack sold worldwide, in My Country, some Premium Overnight Long Distance Bus give this as complementary on board snack for every passenger. Yes, you should try the Train with Auto Carrier on it

    I would also opt for solo occupancy. It's worth the money to get a good night's sleep.

    Those sheets! They look as if they got them from a charity shop. Otherwise, it looked OK. The paper towels in the loo, were obviously missing. Did they provide towels in the compartment?

    Dylan I would like to set you a challenge ? Would you consider flying let’s say to somewhere far like Prague and then returning home via rail however long that takes and documenting it all I would be prepared to be one of your sponsors and I’m sure if you put the idea out there there will be a few more ❤️

    Guarantee it’s very cold where you are. And as it’s winter it gets very dark quite early.
