Hi Mike , make sure you get the cylinder head crack tested & make sure it's not warped send it off to a machine shop they will test it & recondition it for you it's worth getting it professionally done & then you can reassemble it , awesome job can't wait to see her driving down the road 👍😁🇦🇺
Well done Mike! Fingers crossed the block & head are fine! And thank you for changing up your music regularly, & not using metal, like 99% of the other RUclips car channels! Its great you aren't a stereotype! 😎
If you ever get frustrated with these old cars just remember the channel you watch were they are perfect, stay perfect, and he just dusts them. Do you know the channel? Nobody does because it would be boring and I would rather watch the grass grow outside slowly. What I like so much about your channel is: Your personality is real, your human and make mistakes, sarcasm is your second language, and even though your nice as can be to us and to Randy your no fool either. (Caution: If head is huge after reading this please purge all extra air and one slap on face.) Greetings again from Wichita.
I've been watching the "Janis" series since day one. I love seeing the progress and updates on this car. Probably as excited to see you drive it on the road as you are. Keep up the great work and content..
You're a braver man than I am. If I tried that, I KNOW I'd end up with several "extra" nuts and bolts. Then it would let a loud fart out of the tailpipe and die. And I'd be on Facebook looking for a $500 car to drive.
I've been wrenching 43 yrs here Mike, you are doing great, thank you for letting us join along, your dedication to this, is great to watch, I've been on this channel from the first shows. Just know I am a dedicated watcher of you and also Randy. Stay the coarse, Patience Mike, You got this!
Mike, usually when water has entered the cylinder it scrubs the carbon clean. See which cylinders are cleaner than the other ones and l👀k at those for cracks and gasket failures.
Mike congratulations on your successful delve into the motor. After thirty years teaching in Industrial Arts/Technology, the best compliment I received from a former student was ' I knew I could rebuild the engine because you taught to go one step at a time and to follow the instructions in the manual' Awesome job Mike
Looks to me like there Is A brake between the water jacket and the cylinder at the first spot you pointed to. Nice job!!! I can't wait to see what you find and do.
Well done, young man! You have every right to be proud. This is quite possibly my favorite video that you’ve done so far, as I really love old Mercedes. Can’t wait for the next part!
One of your most enjoyable videos in a long time ,can't wait for the followup.. Janice will be purring along soon, you got a lot of guts to tear into her engine.
While factory authorized, the air conditioner was added by the distributor or dealer, not at the factory. Congratulations on getting this far. Just remember, slow and steady wins the race. You don't want to get in a hurry and break something that is made out of unobtainium!
Take the head to a machine shop shave the head and pressure test the head there thanks Mike love to see the older engines again always like your video your turning into a good mechanic have a great day 😊 actually have all heads machined and pressure tested takes the guess work out of it .and on .aluminum head have them shave the head &pressure the head & new head bolts Your Mercedes is going purr like a new one the cylinder walls look good so I don’t feel it’s the block leaking sorry for the typos before
I think it applies but with this video, I think it separates the boys from the men!! I am so impressed with your confidence and know-how to proceed with this work!! So Impressive!!!!! Thank you so much for this video I understand this is not going to be any fun. But I think when you are done you will be amazed with yourself and with Janice!!!! Thank you very much!!! 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
@11:56 Mike. NEVER EVER set a fully assembled head with the cam still installed face down like that. It's very easy to bend the valves that are on the open stroke. Allways lay the head on it's side or use a jig that will prevent the valves from coming into contact with the surface.
Stay the course, the rewards will be worth it, the glory of cruising in style based off all your accomplishments! See if Santa could help you with recommendations on reviewing the engine! Keep wrenchin!
@@MonkeyWrenchMike you should thoroughly clean the rocker arm drip rail. That is the tube connecting the cam journals that has small perforations that drip oil onto the rockers. It attaches to the front journal with an Allen head screw and clamped down on the other journals. If it doesn’t drip you will get a mysterious ticking noise.
Great work, keep it going, Mike! By the way, I don't believe the forums are dead, I personally still use Benz World a lot! There's still a whole bunch of very knowledgeable people constantly helping out other folks in the forums! At least I try to do that, specially in the W124 forum (the chassis I'm more familiar with because I have one and it's been mostly apart 😅), when I can, I always try to help people there.
That first "something", is most likely the issue. That cooper ring seal has failed, and compression/exhaust gasses went into the coolant. That house thing is called wire nut. Great job by the way.
Really hoping it's the gasket. Look for watermarking between the cylinders and water/oil passages. Keep it up Mike! You're doing great! You are going to love the way it drives, this was when Benz were really a coupla decades ahead of the curve. I had a w126 as well, fantastic car, but maybe only 1 decade ahead. I reckon after all the effort, you're truly making this car yours!
I don't know if it's just my settings, but it just sounded like U were in a rush to get this video over. Really was funny to listen to, but was glad to get new content, keep it up
Looks like the gasket is compromised in front of the #2 cylinder. Also all the water jackets may leak underneath the gasket. It doesn’t look like they were replaced during the first engine rebuild. With time and luck of coolant changes the oxidation of the edges gets to the point where the channel opening becomes bigger than the hole in the gasket and we see the results of that on your engine. Good thing is the jackets are still available. Good luck. Maybe post a short clip of the block surface without the gasket on it.
Great video, Mike. Do any of the fellas who can do the job in three hours live near you so they could have helped? Not usually and if they do they are always too busy to help. Looking forward to the next video to find out what lurked under the Head Gasket of Doom. Great joy or the final trip to LKQ.
Great video we almost have same number of subscribers my channel is auto n stuff but I only post shorts trying to get more people interested in car review videos
Hey Mike. I want to let you know someone is trying to scam your viewers. The message I got was to text message you @MonkeyWrenchmike What concerned me was the lowercase 'm' in Mike..Anyway just a heads up. I did take the liberty to tell them off. Have a Great Memorial Day Weekend 🇺🇸👍
I don’t understand how you are not over 100,000 subscribers. Your videos are so good and you actually fix stuff love your channel.
Keep doing the great work, this world needs more of it.

The copper seal on cylinder #1 is kinked, and would be leaking coolant from that passage, straight into the combustion area, Mike.
Mike you’re doing really well that is a hell of a job but your nailing it keep up the good work 😊

Fingers crossed for a gasket failure!
"Okay that was a tool that fell right on my toe" That was hilarious!!
If you strip any threads, you can repair them using a Time-sert. Nothing is the end of the world.

Awesome job Mike
You are getting better and better. Love to see that your confidence is growing. You are now doing the bigger jobs. Good on you.

This was a big job!! Excellent video!
Mike in the English lanquage from across the pond. Those fenders are referred to as "Wings". LOL
and down here in Australia we call them "mudguards" or just "gaurds"!

Gonna be a lovely cruiser once its done :)

Cylinders 1 and 3 are sus.
Beware of cars that come with a repair manual. Do you think that gunk may be some kind of stop leak?
Big heart ❤❤❤❤
Pressure test head? Cracked?
The Head looks like you! 😆
What about the new baby duckies??🦆🦆
I'm guessing the head gasket has gone between cylinders 4 & 5.
