Using Packet Tracer, I demonstrate how to configure serial interfaces for PPP encapsulation and CHAP authentication. CCNA 4 WAN Protocols danscourses.com
Not sure if you mentioned this but when you add this command to R1: username R2 password Cisco The "R2" is used because that is the hostname for Router2. If you have not set the hostnames for these routers then you must use the default hostname. If the username does not match the links will never go up and will remain down. Not sure if anyone else had that problem. The passwords must also match on both routers. If not, the links will also stay down.
When using PAP the username can be anything but does have to match on both ends as with the password. Example username cisco password cisco. When using CHAP, the hostname of the peering router must be used: R1= username R2 password cisco, R2= username R1 password cisco.
Your videos are really good, you go straight to the point, clearifing everything and they are not that long! Thanks for helping CISCO community! greetings from Costa Rica!
Thank you. Maybe I missed it but the curriculum didn't make it clear that you put in the username and password under global config and not the interface.
Thank you so much for making these videos. I was having trouble with PPP in one of my projects, my problem was that I had the wrong usernames on the two routers xD
I am facing one issue when i use encapsulation ppp in R1 intrface goes down but when use encapsulation ppp in R2 interface is not getting up it stays down only PAP is working but CHAP is not working please help me
I couldnt get the hosts to ping the other side at all. Says "Host unreachable". Did static routes. Did you use a DCE on either routers serial interface? I am stumped
Hi SIR ! i am getting this problem and the link state is down when i m done ISP(config-if)#ppp pap se BR1 pass class PPP: Warning: You have chosen a username/password combination that is valid for CHAP. This is a potential security hole.
I have a question about the authentication. In R1 the command "username R2 password cisco" how does R2 know to use the password cisco to authenticate with R1?
Hi I asw your video overall good, but i want to ask you two questions ? 1. when we will give ip route that time its start ping other network then y we need to do encapsulation and authentication ? 2. while am practising in packet tracer if i will enter encapsulation ppp i will get error mail ^ marker please give me solution regards Narendra
Ah! I was thinking that ppp encapsulation was router specific, but I just found out that you have to configure ppp encapsulation on each interface of the router. Problem solved! Thanks!
Now if only cisco could explain like this, instead of trying to cram everything about a command or concept in your head at once. I hate the way they try to explain things. Usually it's just someone trying to flex their degree that's forgotten how to explain things like a normal human.
For R2 int s2/0 give it a clock using the comand # cl r 64000 for the static routes , for R1 : #conf t #ip route 172.16.0.0 255.255.0.0 192.168.50.2 for R2 : # ip route 10.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 192.168.50.1 it should work fine now
This does not work. destination host is unreachable. his other video on ppp to pap worked fine Correction via mikes comment, first thing you want to do is change the routers names to R1, R2 etc AND then it should work fine.

This is so informative Sir; thanks a lot for the valuable information
Thank you for the feedback it is very encouraging.
Great explanation. Helped loads with a part of an assessment I got stuck on.
Please upload more network tutorials. You've help a lot
This is the first step and it is essential: Set the hostname on each router to a unique name
Thanks mate. This really helped with my Work Performance sim.
Thank you. Maybe I missed it but the curriculum didn't make it clear that you put in the username and password under global config and not the interface.

Hi SIR !
i am getting this problem and the link state is down when i m done
ISP(config-if)#ppp pap se BR1 pass class
PPP: Warning: You have chosen a username/password combination that
is valid for CHAP. This is a potential security hole.
Why did you use the 8 bit mask on one side and the 16 bit on the other? Any reason?
Ah may be now ill reconsider liking Cisco. This makes learning so much easier. Why can't my lecturer do this.
I have a question about the authentication. In R1 the command "username R2 password cisco"
how does R2 know to use the password cisco to authenticate with R1?

why we didn't use the command # ppp chap sent-username R pass cisco , as we did with PAP
Can any tell me what's the course before ?A link will be better
tnx a lot man..the pap and chap vids were really helpful
If I have three routers all connected with serial interfaces, how do I know which ones to configure with CHAP?
***** the Routers that you have configured to exchange ppp packets... so probably all three.
Ah! I was thinking that ppp encapsulation was router specific, but I just found out that you have to configure ppp encapsulation on each interface of the router. Problem solved! Thanks!
thanks for this video. its really helpful for me. best wishes
ok i tried the command , chap not appling it

THANK YOU SO MUCH!
nyc video... this helped me a lot...
Can PPP be configured on a fast Ethernet connection?
The new CCNA certification covers PPPoE, PPP over Ethernet
Thank you very much for this really nice tutorial, hope you make more, how about frame-relay? :)
Very Nice and clear Thanks.

This does not work. destination host is unreachable.
his other video on ppp to pap worked fine
Correction via mikes comment, first thing you want to do is change the routers names to R1, R2 etc AND then it should work fine.
Not only that it has to be exactly the same "R1" is not the same as "r1". It's case-sensitive,
chap dont need to do those..only for pap.. so chap i guess i a bit easier to do :)
Yay
