I've loved regency fashion since the 2005 adaptation of Pride & Prejudice. I think it is so fun that Bridgerton has re-ignited a love for this fashion, and I'm going to see if I can knit a regency gown today! I'm working with some original gown example that were knit, my own knitting machine and seeing what we can do with it all!

Engineering knits is a place for people who enjoy all kinds of vintage and antique crafts - from sewing to knitting, crochet to embroidery I like to try it all. I definitely have a preference for historical fibre crafts, and it is my dream to one day make an entire outfit from sheep to sweater. I hope you enjoy watching me and my favorite companion, Nutella, struggle through some fascinating projects! Хобби

Ajouré means « with openings/holes », and refers to open lacework in French :)
Yes! For curious nerds: "jour" means "day" but also "daylight", and by extension can mean an opening - through which light could shine. "Ajouré" is still used nowadays in the context of knitting and textiles. Also, because of the accent, the final "é" is pronounced, like in "crème brulée".
Also in Germany we use the term Ajourmuster for lacepattern.
I have a whole series of the Brother knitting machines. Sometimes when you are having problems in one direction but not the other, it's because some of the little flippers in your carriage aren't moving freely. It needs a fair bit of oil in there to run smoothly, so that's usually a good early step in troubleshooting. I also flip my carriage over so I can see the moving mechanisms and flip all the buttons and levers to be sure everything is moving freely. I'll take a spare needle and run it through the path for each of the settings in both directions to make sure that there is no resistance, and everything is moving freely. I love my Brother machines, and I'm happy to try to help troubleshoot more!
Generally that would be the case, but no needles are selected in the video portion when they are first troubleshooting with the hood off so the only resistance would be from the timing belt mechanism. Different resistance side to side caused by sticky levers etc would need needles selected to run into the issue which I don't see here. Otherwise great advice, I'm glad theres other people out there with love for these machines and their mechanics that know how to diagnose issues with this method, I think it helps build a general intuition on how it all functions beyond just needing to do repairs
I was given a brother machine that had been sitting and rusting in an attic for 20 years and I had to give everything a good clean, including each individual needle to get the old oil off (I used white spirit but I probably shouldn't have) and using it regularly and giving it a good clean and oil down after every project. When I first got it the carriage buttons were really stiff so I could only plain knit but after a few years all of the switches work.
I'm going to watch your videos now!😊
The only possible way I would ever make a regency dress is to knit it out of orange yarn. That’s amazing!
Lady Knitseldown 😂 Amazing.
I discovered your channel based on the knit combinations, so I have no doubt a gown is a possibility. I just cry for your fingers for a full-length gown.
Your happiness when you cracked the lace pattern was so contagious! I'm completely invested in this now, I must know how this turns out, so I can't wait for the next instalment! 😊😊😊
Omg, I never imagined they had knitted dresses in regency period!
And your vids always make me go to a secondhand internet in a search of knitting machine lol! I don't even knit that much!
I don't give a hoot about bridgerton (I'm kinda sick of hearing about it! Lol), but I wanna see this dress!! It's gonna be so pretty! 😍😍
Same.
I've heard bridgerton banded about on the internet, never seen it,but then I don't have a tv,
It's good. Check it out.
The books are so much better…as per usual. 😁
As a fellow knitter and engineer, I drool over all the machines, ancient, old and new. Putting cost and availablity aside, what would be your dream knitting machines, one for each category: 1- old no longer in production and 2- currently in production.
Your love of machine knitting is absolutely infectious. I don't know a thing about Bridgerton (except that it's everywhere in my socials!) but I'm so excited to see how this project turns out
It is very impressive how you know how to clean and renovate/repair these knitting machines. I had never even heard of a knitting machine before you did a vlog about one. Thank you! Really looking forward to seeing your Bridgerton-inspried overdress.
paused at 2:25 to say that i can't thank you enough for introducing me to fully hand-knit historical garments--i had no idea! and that danish museum piece in golden orange wool is beyond spectacular! and i love love love your bridgerton-meets-handicrafts mash-up idea! now i'll continue the video and see how you get on. thank you for sharing all you do, and thank you for being, dear micah! :)
You my Lady are Bold Bold and a tad crazy but in a good way May your yarn fly smoothly and your hands never cramp😘
This is just a masterclass in figuring things out, making it work, taking the time and learning new things. I can't wait to see how the dress turns out!
That 1st golden gown with long sleves, I looked to me like a dress from the 60's or the 70's. I think is gorgeous btw.
Your excitement was infectious when you showed your lace sample, I was so pleased for you because honestly, knitting machines look like a nightmare!
I don't think I've ever been this excited about a project! I can't wait to see how this progresses!!
so exciting to see your new knitting machine crank out really beautiful lace! can't wait to see the finished dress. thank you for sharing!! :)
I got so excited when I saw the lace carriage actually work! It’s a crap shoot when buying vintage and pre-owned machines. 🌈🌈🦋🦋
This is such a fun project. I now want a knitting machine to play with!
Those lace segments are so impressive!!! I'm glad you've figured out a way to make it happen.
The fact that a wearable shark blanket exists is awesome!
The answer lady is amazing. The absolutely best source of problemsolving when it comes to knitting machines. I just lover them!
Thanks for showing the inside of your machine. The complexity is mind blowing.
The test knits are so pretty, I can't wait to see the rest of the project!
I have a video request, if you are not too busy or bothered: Could you please continue the Call the Midwife series? It is because of this channel and your recommendation that I started watchingbit on CBC Gem. It changed my life for the better and helped me to overcome and live with my son's death. Thank you so much!
I'm so sorry for your loss.
Oh noooo, now I can't ignore the idea I had for an edwardian inspired Yzma cosplay knit gown 😂 I am so excited to see how this turns out! The lace sample is soooo pretty!
I LOVE YZMA! I hope you do it, that sounds so cool.
@@ZaydaFleming haha, thanks! I'm really thinking about it!
What a fascinating project! I love that you found 2 extant gowns with such variety between them (hand knit vs. machine, worn over a base dress vs. worn as the whole dress). Fantastic! Definitely subscribing.
I look forward to seeing how the project progresses, the lace reminds me a bit of some of the beautiful hand knitted dresses from Estonia that are being produced today, so delicate and light! I hope you are feeling a bit better.
I love hand-knitting whilst I watch you machine knit. Your brain astounds me. I’m so excited to see the rest of this project!
I never knew there were knitted gowns that far back, and definitely not machine knitted. I have a few machines myself, and I'm so excited about this project.
I’m so excited for this!!! It’s going to be so beautiful! And I’m super excited to see all the beautiful future knits now that you can make lace on a machine!
I am SO excited for this series. Please keep the knitting machine content coming! I can’t get a machine myself at this time so I’m living vicariously through you lol. Your design is gorgeous and I can’t wait to see where it goes :)
In Germany we call knitted lace Ajour or "Ajour-Muster", this term is very common. I would assume that it's the same in the surrounding countries.
So good to see you happy and inspired. I can't wait to see how you magic this into reality.
Have to agree that the original is lovely! great project!
Cannot wait to see your dress!
I am so happy to hear you say you like blue, because you look gorgeous in the blue gown at the beginning of the video. 🩵💙🩵 Good luck for this beautiful project!
I don't think I've ever been so excited about a project! I can't wait to see how this progresses!
Thank you! You have just given me the direction I needed to investigate how to fix my own knitting machine where there was a problem with the patterning. Hopefully it is a similar problem and seeing you take off the cover of the patterning section has given me the knowledge and confidence of how to possibly fix the problem
Brother 881s are great. I have 2 of them (long story) my electronic Brother 950i with an AYAB modification is my absolute favourite! It's so nice to see someone excited about machine knitting.
I have to say your channel and your personality provides an endless supply of pleasant surprises ❤ I don't have a knitting machine but you are so interesting to watch can't wait for the next episode, in the meantime I hope you feel better 💛
That looks amazing! I can't wait to see what you make with this machine! and it's in these moments that I'm so envious of your knitting machines :) there are things you just can't hand knit!
Oooooh, this is such a fun project, can't wait to see it happen! 🤩
I'm picturing this from the sample and I know it will be beautiful! Feel better soon.
This is super fun and looking forward to seeing it!
how fun! can't wait to see more of the process !
Awesome idea! Can’t wait to see how it comes together 🙂🙂
I love when you get so excited,by sOmething new. Enjoy and I'm looking forward to seeing the result!
I can't wait to see how you do it. I have never used my lace carridge..been sitting in its box 25 odd years. I am so inspired, thank you ❤
YES - figuring out what's wrong and fixing things is the best feeling, congrats!!! 🎉🎉🎉Thank you for sharing your troubleshooting process; I'm excited to see what you do with your new knitting machine!
So excited for this project!!! And I'm so glad that all is well with you and your family! ❤❤❤
Such an interesting video. I'm so looking forward to the next installment!
Loved to see your joy and excitement over the successful and beautiful lace piece!
I'm very much looking forward to the next part of this amazing project.
Wishing you all the calm and health and energy needed.
I absolutely love this!!!
I love seeing how happy this machine makes you! ❤ Really feeling out, I love it!
That’s amazing! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Honestly, I can't knit to save myself (other than a super basic scarf), but if I had the space for that knitting machine, there would be so much lace in my life!
That is so beautiful! I am so proud of you. Hard work comes rewards. ❤❤
You’re always so informative! And brave! Thanks! ♥️♥️♥️
this is so exciting! can't wait to see it finished! the level of excitement I had when that lace knitting started coming to life on your machine! So beautiful!!
i love the intro! your videomaking just gets better and better , so enjoyable to spend 20 minutes with your curious intelligent sharing of skill and passion. thanks for bringing us along!
Me at 16.38 - Ah yes, I too fail to work unless I have propper support. I understand.
This was awesome in so many ways! The project, the machine, fixing the machine, the lace ! 😊
punchcards? wooo! i missed programming our college mainframes by punchcard by only about 2 years (our school was about 2 yrs behind the times). we were so thankful we "got" to program using line editors and printers instead. when we "finally" got screen editors, we were off to the races! :D
This is so exciting!! Good luck.
Wahoo! Full adventure!
I’m so happy you got it to work.
You just take these ideas to a whole new level!
Your knitted lace is just beautiful, as is your whole video. Thank yoh!
OMG! Where have you been my whole life? I just acquired a toyota machine. I am still cleaning it, but I already love it.
I can't wait to see your dress. I have some aspirations of my own. I have been planning a cardigan with snow white elements. I don't know how it will work out, but I can't wait to try.
Ohhhhh my gooooooood! I’d love to knit a dress for myself now! But I think I don’t have the endurance to knit such a bis piece!
That intro 👏
You find the best stuff. I’ve been looking for a good used knitting machine to use. This brother is great. And the lace work? Chef’s kiss perfection
i am heeeeeere for this content!
Omg I loved the intro! ❤
"Jour" also means hole/gap even now, including in fabric arts. And "ajouré" in this context would mean some kind of openwork, yes.
The inspiration gown is drop-dead gorgeous! Can't wait to see your version 😃
Take care! Sending you many positive...notions 😉...for your & your family's health.
I look forward to more! ❤
Oh that knit piece that came off when you got it to work... beautiful. SUPER impressed! Looking forward to more of this content. Also, I hope things are getting better for you. Hugs :)
Its sooo cool. Really inspires me to take apart the pattrerning mechanics on my kh830 since im having issues too. Good luck truly❤❤❤
Ooooo Im here for this
Everyone seems so drawn to regency lately! I'm suprised there are examples of entire knit dresses from the time. I was always under the impression that knitting was almost never used as fashionable outerwear until the 20s. Anyway its really cool to me that such examples exist.
This is so interesting!
I'm so curious to see how you pattern this 😊 love the project!
Very impressive
I love brother machines and how their lace works, I have never used a singer machine but I never liked the idea of how you can't shift stitches over multiple rows to create neat decrease lines with them, and how you can't combine lace and colourwork in one row. Brother machines are much more readable and hand work friendly to me since you can hand select needles to make them do what you want without needing to get all the punchcard mechanisms 100% working. I have a kh881 too, and I loved working out how the lace worked in order to design custom lace punchcards that also support colourwork and stuff. I would be interested in seeing if you ever use the built in knitleader, I thought I would use mine based on how much praise it got from various sources, but I just prefer planning stuff meticulously from the start rather than trusting that ive drawn my piece exactly to correct scale and chosen the exact right ruler. Maybe you can help me see the light, or i can have someone finally agree with me that it isn't that big of a deal. Custom punchcards are always a fun thing to get into when you're over the premade ones, especially for lace since they seem so complicated but are actually pretty simple once you get the hang of them. I use a custom maker program + a laser cutter for mine but brothers are easy to get the premade rolls of paper + a holepunch for so you dont have to mess with all that. Look forward to seeing what you do with it in the future :)
I so wish I had your brain for machines; I have an excellent vintage singer that needs a bit of work. Figuring out what's wrong makes my brain want to explode. Lol
Beautiful lace, you should be so proud of yourself. ❤❤❤
@EngineeringKnits if it's not to much trouble could you tell me what resources you used for rebuilding your sponge bar? That's the exact problem I have and there's on one where I live who services them. I've used your videos to get over my fear of breaking the darn thing in the first place so I'd love it if I could finally use mine. No worries if you don't have them anymore though
I have the same knitting machine, mine came with loads of punch cards that I’m too scared to try! I’m looking forward to seeing how your dress progresses, hopefully I’ll be inspired to experiment more with my machine x
Every time I watch your channel I just happen to be doing some knitting
So cool! Can you program your own punchcards?
Also, loved seeing the Cornell homecoming shirt!!
Immediately invested.....
i just found your channel and you were suggisted by just vintage crochet and i love watching your videos . i crochet but i cant knit but would love to learn any tips on where and how to start
You could make some beautiful rectangular lace shawls with this machine.
Yay 🌷
my mom always calls openwork "ajour". ❤
I’ve never watched an episode of Bridgerton but I’m excited to see the dress you knit. Can I ask about the pattern you used last week for the Tunisian crochet project bag, will you be uploading to Etsy for purchase as I’d really love to have a copy and give the bag a try.
The Answer lady and her husband kindly responded to my email when i ran into a problem with my knit machine! Don't hesitate to contact them about you lace carriage issues!
What do the lace cards look like? It would be fun to figure out how to design new lace patterns.
