    I've loved regency fashion since the 2005 adaptation of Pride & Prejudice. I think it is so fun that Bridgerton has re-ignited a love for this fashion, and I'm going to see if I can knit a regency gown today! I'm working with some original gown example that were knit, my own knitting machine and seeing what we can do with it all!

    Engineering knits is a place for people who enjoy all kinds of vintage and antique crafts - from sewing to knitting, crochet to embroidery I like to try it all. I definitely have a preference for historical fibre crafts, and it is my dream to one day make an entire outfit from sheep to sweater. I hope you enjoy watching me and my favorite companion, Nutella, struggle through some fascinating projects!

    Ajouré means « with openings/holes », and refers to open lacework in French :)

    • @lasphynge8001
      @lasphynge8001 16 дней назад +18

      Yes! For curious nerds: "jour" means "day" but also "daylight", and by extension can mean an opening - through which light could shine. "Ajouré" is still used nowadays in the context of knitting and textiles. Also, because of the accent, the final "é" is pronounced, like in "crème brulée".

    • @ohwienordisch9843
      @ohwienordisch9843 16 дней назад +7

      Also in Germany we use the term Ajourmuster for lacepattern.

    The only possible way I would ever make a regency dress is to knit it out of orange yarn. That’s amazing!

    I have a whole series of the Brother knitting machines. Sometimes when you are having problems in one direction but not the other, it's because some of the little flippers in your carriage aren't moving freely. It needs a fair bit of oil in there to run smoothly, so that's usually a good early step in troubleshooting. I also flip my carriage over so I can see the moving mechanisms and flip all the buttons and levers to be sure everything is moving freely. I'll take a spare needle and run it through the path for each of the settings in both directions to make sure that there is no resistance, and everything is moving freely. I love my Brother machines, and I'm happy to try to help troubleshoot more!

    • @QuentinWes
      @QuentinWes 16 дней назад +6

      Generally that would be the case, but no needles are selected in the video portion when they are first troubleshooting with the hood off so the only resistance would be from the timing belt mechanism. Different resistance side to side caused by sticky levers etc would need needles selected to run into the issue which I don't see here. Otherwise great advice, I'm glad theres other people out there with love for these machines and their mechanics that know how to diagnose issues with this method, I think it helps build a general intuition on how it all functions beyond just needing to do repairs

    • @rosieevans8960
      @rosieevans8960 15 дней назад +4

      I was given a brother machine that had been sitting and rusting in an attic for 20 years and I had to give everything a good clean, including each individual needle to get the old oil off (I used white spirit but I probably shouldn't have) and using it regularly and giving it a good clean and oil down after every project. When I first got it the carriage buttons were really stiff so I could only plain knit but after a few years all of the switches work.

    I love brother machines and how their lace works, I have never used a singer machine but I never liked the idea of how you can't shift stitches over multiple rows to create neat decrease lines with them, and how you can't combine lace and colourwork in one row. Brother machines are much more readable and hand work friendly to me since you can hand select needles to make them do what you want without needing to get all the punchcard mechanisms 100% working. I have a kh881 too, and I loved working out how the lace worked in order to design custom lace punchcards that also support colourwork and stuff. I would be interested in seeing if you ever use the built in knitleader, I thought I would use mine based on how much praise it got from various sources, but I just prefer planning stuff meticulously from the start rather than trusting that ive drawn my piece exactly to correct scale and chosen the exact right ruler. Maybe you can help me see the light, or i can have someone finally agree with me that it isn't that big of a deal. Custom punchcards are always a fun thing to get into when you're over the premade ones, especially for lace since they seem so complicated but are actually pretty simple once you get the hang of them. I use a custom maker program + a laser cutter for mine but brothers are easy to get the premade rolls of paper + a holepunch for so you dont have to mess with all that. Look forward to seeing what you do with it in the future :)
