Back in 2007 I bought my first saw, the 361. It has been great, the only thing I have had to replace was the oil cap and it has kept me and my family warm with firewood the whole time. I am actually impressed at the initial power numbers this saw put out, especially when you compare it with other popular saws tested on your channel.
I love my Stihl MS361! I installed an higher flow oiler from a Stihl MS461 and a (Scott) Wojo ported muffler. Currently running a 24” Stihl bar, 7 tooth sprocket , with a .050” drive link 3/8” yellow label chain. Light weight chainsaw with plenty of horsepower! ⛓️🪚😏
My 2260 JRed begs to differ. I'm here to give my new 361 a fighting chance. I've always had an 026/261 and 064 but this is my 1st 036/361 and I feel like I've been fooled at this time.
I use to love my ms361 pro when I had it. Now I can't afford Stihl. So I bought a Neotec clone of the ms382 I believe and a Farmatec clone of the ms200t I use to have. Of course since I can't afford a real Stihl pro saw, I can't afford to get either saw built. But if I could, I think I'd pick you to build it. Your work seems so cleanly done. 😎👍 Great video.
I like the 361, it was the most husky like saw of its time; spring AV, fair filtration, decent angle on the top handle. Always liked the ported one I had, sold it not long after the 462 came out. Very nice work and gains. That will last forever, it looks really clean.

I have a MS361 but the decompression button isn't there, instead there is a fixed bolt in its place. Factory moulded hole for the decomp button is present in the orange plastic cover. Is this how some of them came or could it be a case of a major component having being replaced prior to my ownership?
I am a fan of the ms361. For the past two weeks I have been running a stock one felling, while I recover from the big C. With just an added muffler port, baffle left alone, and high output oiler, it pulls a 28" es light with full skip square grind in hardwoods. The air filter on these do not seem to clog up nearly as fast as other Stihls. Curious where this saws max rpm sweet spot was with your exhaust timing, the 361 I am running is great at the factory spec of 14,000 rpms, perfect plug color, factory squish is .026 so the base would need to be cut to go lower. I have not put a degree wheel on this saw yet. I noticed you tend to favor .024 squish and exhaust at 102. I have a few ms361s, one that needs a rebuild that I am deciding on timing numbers and piston. I looked at a big bore cylinder for it as well but not sure if I want want to roll the dice on that. Great to see a 361 on your channel, thanks for sharing.
@@dynojoemods2764 I have been researching cylinder options for a 372 x-torque and took a look at the current crop of big bore cylinders for both saws, rewatching your video on that saw and the 372xp was part of my decision to put another 50mm oem cylinder on it. As I get older I find myself liking a lighter saw. I have been following your custom big bore builds with this 361 in mind, I was waiting to see if you found a company to replate the 500i cylinder before I gave you a call. It would be nice to get a 361 on par with say a 461. What are your thoughts on boring an oem 361 cylinder?
@@dynojoemods2764 Thanks Joe, one of the 361s I have has a damaged piston from a piece of wood getting in the muffler and possibly the plating so it would be a good candidate. I look forward to your next video, have a great weekend.
@@OOOOOO12345 on this saw I switched out the o-ring, piston and adjustment scew with parts for a 461R (high output) you can do that or switch out the whole pump assembly for one for either a 460R or 461R. Also I run Carlton A1LMSK chain, it keeps the oil in the bar groove better than any other chain I have tried, which has significantly increased the life of my bars on all my saws. Properly sharpening the chain for the wood you are cutting is really the key to using a 28" on this saw.

Nice build. I love my 361. If it ever dies I will rebuild it.
These respond really well to opening up the intake like you said, and bit bigger carb, I also go a little more on exhaust

With a safe tune it would be fine, but a larger saw would definitely be better for bog cuts
