My dad was a drover ,/ rider in northern Arizona back in the 30s and 40s and he wore these a lot! Told me that they made a big difference when riding in heavy brush and also helped a lot in not getting your rope hung up on the stirrup! @@ArizonaGhostriders Yeah, he did ride for them a short time. Like a lot of those boys he moved around a lot but mostly worked in the Prescott and Payson area. I remember a lot of his stories but like so many other sons with their fathers...... now I wish that I knew every minute of his life !

Hi Santee.it looks like bota has a different meaning out there for the vaqueros is to protect them in their daily job in the range, but the meaning of the word is boots! Funny bota protect the boots has well! Thanks and keep up buckaroo's
Yeah, if you Google "botas" you see what you get. I think it was just a word to describe the leggings. Maybe there isn't a term for leggings in Spanish....dunno.
In 1816' mid west they were called "gaiters". Tim Conway thought it was his job to drive Harvey korman nuts on the "Carol Burnett show"...Dirty Dan is your Tim Conway! 😀
The actual name of these Mexican boots was “Botas de Campana” or “Botas Campaneras” Campana means Bell in Spanish, so the English translation would be “Bell Boots” Their name derives from the fact that they look like bells when worn. The Botas de Campana together with the Armas (Shields) protected the Mexican Charro’s pants and legs from the rain, mud and tears, before Chaparreras (Chaps) were introduced. Once Chaparreras became fashionable and common, they began to replace the botas and armas. So if you wore botas de campana you wouldn’t need Chaparreras; and if you wore Chaparreras, you wouldn’t wear Botas. The Botas de Campana should not be confused with the Mexican Polainas also known as Mitazas. Mitazas are straighter and tighter than the Botas, plus they are fastened with buttons or “conchos” as you called them, unlike the botas which are only fastened with a thread or garter known as “Atadero” just below the knee.
@@ArizonaGhostriders I remember the scene in the film Little Big Man where Dustin Hoffman's character had a drink at a soda shop from a fountain shaped as an elephant . Later his Indian grandpa recounted in that a dream he saw him drink water filled with air from an animal with a long nose .
That was my first thought , leather bags for carrying water or wine . I've been to Italy and Spain where wine can be bought out of the barrel , the buyer brings their own bota or pays a little extra for a plastic 1 liter bottle .
They are so easy. Mine were a little more difficult because of the sewn flap, which I wouldn't do again. But you could make a nice pair in a couple hours.
That's very fashionable made by our cowboys. I enlisted into the US Navy in 1985 . Canvas leggings were issued to us on the first day of boot camp . We wore them over our boondocker boots with our dungaree pants bloused under . The US military has issued leggings with low quarter shoes since Revolutionary times . Boots were for cavalrymen . Through the Korean War , Infantry were issued shoes and leggings , only Airborne Parachutists wore jump boots . When I got to the fleet I discarded my boondockers for navy flight deck boots as worn by the crews on aircraft carriers .

They are so easy. Mine were a little more difficult because of the sewn flap, which I wouldn't do again. But you could make a nice pair in a couple hours. I bet Duke has a pair or two.
Good question! The US used to have a lot more forested areas than it does now. But it depended on where you were located, as some places had more trees than others (the southwest being notoriously dry, and the great plains being mostly grasslands, for example). But that's where industrious people would come in and import lumber from other areas.
Lumber came from forested areas. Here in the desert, that was a little harder to come by, but not impossible. In Cochise county, elements of the Clanton-McLaury crew had a lumber business, as did Mt. Lemmon here in Tucson. But Adobe was just more readily available.
Back when I first started logging I worked in the Great Mojave Forrest and then moved on to the Woods in Death Valley. You may say "Hey those areas are deserts!" And my response is "They are now that I'm done wit em!"
