I had a bunch of wannabes get mad at me for explaining to them that being a cowboy was more than fancy clothes. It's a lifestyle and a way to make a living that's not for most. Most of them had never been on a horse, worked horses or cattle, slept on horseback or in a bedroll or stayed up all night waiting for and helping a calf be born. It was a hard life and I wouldn't trade the memories for anything.
I swear you episodes are getting better all the time. This was a great subject. From the past to the present.
This is true. I was recently in Nashville and took a stroll down broadway. They literally wear cowboy hats and boots as a costume. I’m sure it’s removed and tossed into the closest as soon as they get back home.
Thank You!
Awesome memories
@@ArizonaGhostriders wannabes= drugstore cowboys
Yep, cowboy clothes came a long way between the 1870s and the 1970s, but every generation had their reasons for the improvements. Real good episode.
Thank You!
My mom was a cowgirl at heart and loved the old west. She actually used to raise horses before I was born, back when the family had enough land for it but where the pasture used to be was where the house we lived in was built. I always heard from both her and my birth dad that if they had stayed together I'd be living on a farm somewhere. My dad is the kinda guy that likes to grow his own food while my mom knew more about livestock since it's something both she grew up with.
Very cool
I’m surprised that you didn’t include the scene from Back to The Future 3 where Marty McFly showed up in the old west town dressed as a 1950s silver-screen cowboy. Great vid, again, Santee!
I've done that one before. Wanted to change it up
Y'all are getting better every day. Loved it
Thank You!
That is cool! Even the "covering their nakedness" line.
Thank You!
I'm a little too old for that Cowboy stuff these days, but I bet I would have enjoyed it about 30 years ago. Cool video Santee!
Me too, so I just go gunslinger.
Former bullrider here. Outstanding video!
Thank you kindly! Quite the job, you had.
I love the button down shirts, boots and hats! The old west is a hard place to be, but that’s how the younger generation learns to be frugal. You certainly got to know the value of life and the dollar!
Take care and stay safe bud! God bless!✝️🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Absolutely!!
It’s hard wanting to be a cowboy and not being able to be one in the traditional sense. I work an office job, or work out in the construction when needed. I haven’t ridden a horse in years, and I don’t ranch work. I always get hate for it, but I love the work ethic and i do my best to live up to a certain standard.
Nice!
I grew up in the 50's and 60's on various ranches in Eastern Oregon, Idaho and Montana. The Montana Ranch we were on is one you see on the TV series Yellowstone I haven't watched it. We were there for most of a year an I started school in Darby, MT. I had to quit the Cowboy trade because the kids needed shoes and doctors sometimes at the same time. At 68 I still miss the work. All our clothes including the hat were practical and had a purpose.
Awesome that you shared that with us.
Interesting I had a friend who grew up on a ranch in OK in the 1940s and early 1950s until he was drafted. He explained the use of every piece of equipment working Cow Punchers used.
A great video Santee, btw my boots have had plenty of manure on them over the years until my horse passed on.
Cool!
Thank y'all again
You're welcome.
Thank you for showing all the facts on the old western cowboys vs modern cowboys and the photos to 🤠👍👍
You're welcome.
My dad trained as a bookmaker but couldn’t get the lasts. The boot companies wouldn’t sell them. He made my mom and him a pair then nothing until he made a bunch of clown shoes for his fellow Shriners after he retired. So I never learned to make boots. He also had a bunch of tailor made western shirts. They didn’t have no flowers or bright colors but they’d a made a movie cowboy proud. They fit me when I was 12 but by 14 I couldn’t get my arms in them. Think a nephew got ‘em. They were heavy wool and definitely not work shirts but stylin. Great informative video.
Fun info!
I inherited my taste in denim snap button shirts from a grandfather who was a welder. They kept horses and I used to love going into the old barn and smelling the leather saddles and harness.
Thanks for sharing!
This was a great bit of history. Woot woot
Thank You!
Saturday again already, thanks Santee, hoooo all that sunshine.
Yeah
Cowboys were the workers and ranchers that conquered and tamed the West, their clothes were adjusted for the work not exactly conceived for it. A good example is the hat and its evolution from wool to straw. As always, good video Santee!
Thank You!
This is a great topic I never thought about, but was very interested in when I read the title.
Thank You!
I knew Jack and shopped on wazee Street for over 25 years, I considered Jack a friend. Rockmount shirts are awesome 😎
They are!
I bought a modern straw cowboy hat that had the typical bent upwards brim for my work as a farm worker, harvesting, weeding and planting vegetables bailing hay. I kept getting sunburn on the sides of my face. So i bought a new hat and changed the shape of the brim so it was flat and i never got sunburn anymore. It ended up looking like a bolera hat/ sombrero de huaso .Much more pretty in my eyes than the modern cowboy hat shape.
That is perfect. Glad it worked out for ya!
Great video (of course) today. My first thought was the 4 wheelers you mentioned at the end being a serious difference today. By the way how's that old Dirty Dan these days? Haven't seen him in a while, except the clips like today. Hope he's doing well.
Stay safe out there, and take it easy man.
Thank You! He's got some health challenges, but holding up ok.
Well tell him a big Dirty Dan fan hopes he does well. Us Dan's have to stick together ya know.@@ArizonaGhostriders
Get well soon, prayers to Dirty Dan.
Thanks again Santee & Co.
My pleasure Victor!
I wasn’t a ‘Cowboy’ but I did work with cattle some in my youth. How well I remember hauling hay from ‘can see to can’t’. I can readily see the functionality of the clothing of the period.
I'd say that counts as ranch work!
Thanks, lots of information here
Glad it was helpful!
That was so COOL. I don't know how you do it, but you
always have the best clips, both audio, and visual, while you deal with the subject matter. another winner, Santee.
👏🤠👏
Wow, thank you!
Good job mr Santee
Thank you, Tony!
Stylish Santee and Dapper Dan! 😎✌🏻
Thank You!
Its cool that every generation of cowboys has clothes and each of them had an improvement that the last one lacked, i remember my grandfather used to have a duster coat and a leather cowboy hat,and he's a horse breeder
Wow!
Ridin fence I've always had a rifle in a scabbard hangin off my saddle. Usually right side under the stirrup leather attached to the skirt tie anchors on the tree.
Interesting
I'd say we got some pretty Old west cowboys on this channel if you know what I mean. You and Dan look spry for your age and have the energy of every energy drink combined. Great vid Santee!!! 👴🤠
I appreciate that
Awesome as usual Santee. So many people think the cowboy life is fun and romantic. You always show the hard lonely side. Thank you Santee
You're welcome.
Funny my grandfather wears a Spanish style suit for rodeo in New Mexico in early 1900s
Nice
Right Fine Duds I recon! Thanks Santee! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
Rock on!
Thanks. I've not been to a rodeo. I should do that. We have them in Pendleton, Oregon
It's a fun experience.
Well that's a new one for me: "the hurricane deck of an equine". Had to look that one up! 👍
It's up there with "business end of a sixgun"
Thanks for explaining this, and some great vintage photos.
My pleasure!
One of your Best !
Thank You!
Great episode as always! Even learnt sumptin new that the snaps on modern shirts actually have a function to remove the shirt quickly if they got caught on a fence or a horn. I still prefer buttons. Purty interesting that, Pard.
Thank You!
1970's
Girl- Like my new Western Shirt?
Me- Yes! Do you know the speed limit in Texas?
Girl- No, what is it?
Me- Grabs shirt on each side at collar pulls saying " Wide Open " as it unsnapps😅
i like to think that the old west cowboys would approve of the changes as it’s both comfort and practicality behind most of the changes, with the boots being retained simply for style choice as they’re not any getter than steel toe boots for working out of quads and trucks
Some still live the old ways.
I actually just done a similar video on this subject. I called it how to assess the sand of a cowboy. It was done as a response to Garrett da bang bang woods talk # 1 . Also mentioned you in the video.
Mountain man
Those fellers are good people.
It makes sense, back then you wore what you had, what you could get. Now days we have some many options. I appreciate living in a time where I have more choice in what I can wear. I swear looking at the old west is like looking into a window or picture of the past distant, unrelateable by modern standards, but fascinating nonetheless.
That's an important take away. The practicality of an early time when there wasn't a Banana Republic in every town.
Nice, well written episode.
Thank You!
Good one, Santee. Thanks
You're welcome
Have a good weekend an week sir
Thank You!
One of my great grandfathers was born in 1883. He ran away from his home in Missouri when he was 16 and hopped a train to Colorado. There he became a cowboy on a ranch for most of a decade and later homesteaded, married and raised a family. I have a couple of pictures of him, neither is in cowboy attire but I did get to meet him as a child in the 1970s. He was born into a world of steam engines and horse and buggy transportation and lived to see men walk on the moon. Must have been a bizarre experience.
I'd say that's pretty amazing.
Mine too, born in 1890 and lived till 1980, saw history.
Another awesome episode!!!
Hope you enjoy!
Great video!
Thank You!
Loved it!
Thank You!
I think it comes down to what's in your heart when you wear faded stacked jeans and your favorite boots
True
Great episode Santee! Have a great weekend!
Thank You!
My uncle that bought me my first pair of boots from John's Boots from Houston, Tx. once told me the difference between a real cowboy & a drug store cowboy is that real cowboys had the manure (bs) on the outside of their boots. Another fine start to a Saturday Santee, thank you.
LOL!
As always, informative and entertaining! Great video, Santee!
Thank You!
Another excellent video, santee!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for this Santee.
Could you do one on “What Chuck Wagons and other Wagons were made of?” Please. It would be great to see a wagon wheel made (not the chocolate sweet biscuit lol) and the canopy etc.
If I can find someone who does it...
@@ArizonaGhostriders that would be awesome, thank you
I used to be a fan of shirt snaps, but I have changed my mind on them for one reason, ease of repair. When a button pops off it's usually as simple as sewing it back on, but when a snap rips out it usually takes shirt fabric with it.
Excellent point.
Good Video
Thank You!
Great video Santee
Glad you enjoyed it, Led.
Nice video
Thank You!
my dad and grandad were working cowboys, i went on to 2 other careers after school but still dress western, and I have to laugh, every now and then I somehow end up with a button down shirt, usually end up sewing 2 or 3 buttons back on the first time i take it off😁
🤠
Interesting video, thanks Santee!!!
My pleasure!
Nice distinctions, Santee.
Can we get an Old West differences between Soiled Doves then vs. now?
Would make for an interesting video.
Possibly!
I'm not sure how his wife would like him seeking out ladies of the evening.
I know a few. I'll send them down there.
@@Devin_Stromgren
It's purely for research purposes. Nothing else! 🙂
Your living the dream Santee! Keep up the good videos, Thanks.
Thanks! Will do!
Maybe cowboy clothes from now are more fancy, but like the Wild West styles way more. For me are they more beautiful 😀😉🤠
I agree
Is that Chris LeDoux on the bull in the opening? Hard to blieve it's been 18 years since he passed.
Not sure if that's him.
thank you for helping keep the old west alive. love it
Our pleasure!
This was very interesting thanks for sharing 👍
You're welcome
Rodeos are really more popular than golf or tennis?!? Why does that give me a sort of warm, fuzzy feeling? Thanks for sharing that!
Because watching golf on tv is not for everyone.
@@ArizonaGhostriders Like me... watching golf on TV is mildly more interesting then the paint drying channel.
Thank you for another interesting video. Saturday mornings are much more special because I look forward to seeing what you're going to talk about. Thank you. 🤠
Thanks for watching!
Wow. Well done and SUPER educational Santee! A classic in the can for SURE!
Thanks so much!
And that's it another lesson! Thanks guys
You bet!
Howdy
The cowboy is still around today thanks more importantly to the tradition of the old west. God bless America.
We still got 'em, that's for sure.
Great video Santee,
My favorite part of helping friends brand their cows was the huge feast they would put on for the help after the branding was over. Plus the guys would all get together and bring out their latest toys ( firearms) they purchased since the last branding and we'd get into some target practice. Those were fun times.
Sounds like it!
Very interesting Santee. I would never have thought you would compare the old and modern. Super cool my friend. 👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Special thanks to all those COWS, for giving them cowpokes something to poke!!
Imagine if they were limited to lizards!
Imagine.
Not ranch related, but hat related: My Dad, Grandfather and Uncle went fishing in Quebec, in the 80's. Each was wearing a short crowned, dark green felt brimmed hat.
In a remote town one day, they stopped for breakfast. As they walked together to the restaurant, one little boy loudly said, "Look Mama! COWBOYS !!"
Cowboys sure are a universal part of many lives.
That is awesome!
Thanks for the video. My family were mostly ranchers. It's interesting to see from old pictures (a few are tin types) how the clothing changed.
You're welcome
The last photo you put up is TOM MIX !!! - 1880 - 1940 he died in Arizona - 8/21/2023 🤠 Canada
Good catch. Finally someone said something!
Yes. I drive by his death spot often and have seen the car that was in the accident.
Mr Santee can you do a series on wild west chronicles starring Jack elliot?
Frankly the show drives me nuts
I've done a couple of them so far.
@@ArizonaGhostridersI'll be sure to go look at em. Thanks
Interesting video, Santee in video jeans of the 19th century were mainly worn for miners for durability even though Levi’s & Wrangler jeans were made in 1890’s. Every year for long time the cowboy’s yesterday to present finally got their praise called National Day of Cowboys paying respect to all. Rodeo’s then got started for ranchers to brand cattle, and compete other ranches. Payson was one town for that. We are holding longest continuous rodeo tonight 131 yrs.
Is Whiplash the Rodeo Monkey there too?
@@ArizonaGhostriders not familiar with that name whiplash monkey?
Wrong, Wranglers were invented for rodeo cowboys and first marketed in 1947.
@@jdgoade1306 Here is what I found out. Wranglers were better made 1947. Here is origin
Wrangler is one of the most important denim brand and which has left its profound impact on the world denim industry. Having its origins in late 1890s, the brand grew from strength to strength as it spread from a small factory in North Carolina to a multi national corporation.
@@KidYuma1880 I know they hired a Polish tailor to design them for rodeo hands, higher in the rise more room in the thigh, and Levi's were around much longer , most cowpunchers I knew since the 1950s wore 501 Levi's, many still do Blue Bell put Wranglers on the market 1947, I've seen many an old photo of guys wearing Levi's, many people don't know men's pants didn't have belt loops till the 20th century.
So very interesting and very informative video, I really loved and enjoyed it.
I got a lot of much needed inspiration for the story and series Mysteriarch Mythos I’m working on writing.
Great job and well done, keep up the great work.
I’m definitely going to be adding a combination of cowboys and pirates to my story’s old west frontier and cassette futurism/retrofuturistic paranormal setting.
There’s a setting in the scene that I’m currently writing called the Chetenka canyon and the chenali river, most people on Alessaeia Isle just call it symmetry breach ravine, due to the paranormal entities known as ‘symmetries’ that roam the area.
The native Alessaeiaen tribe ‘the Chetànèskah/Chetàni, live in the area surrounding the canyon, and they will not step foot in the canyon, they say it’s a place of negative energy and hauntingly cursed.
They call it the place where spirits dwell/the spirits nest.
There’s a sign at the entrance that reads “ warning , here there be spirits , enter and traverse at your own risk”.
Today I’ll also be introducing one of the frontier cowboy-pirate characters into my story.
That characters name is Thackery Baer-Rivers and friends name is Creekson /Creelson Marshall-fletcher.
Their nicknames are Thax and Creek/Cree and they’re friends with Captain Thetch Lyndbek-Sparring , Astrael and her assistant Arcturus Nanouk/Nanouk Arcturus and his nickname is Anou Arcturus.
In the story during chapter 1 the Chetenka canyon is where Mercia Hawkins, Lunoa Casper and Mhaevo Casselini must go to if they want to find gnarled root cave and gain access to the Liminality chasm depths that lie very far below both the world of Tarmynea-VideoWorld and the subterranean dimensional space anomaly of Kenopsiapolis.
I hope you all really like the bit of story details and characters from my book that I shared.
So cool!!!
@@ArizonaGhostriders thanks.
I thought of better names for my story’s two frontier cowboy-pirate characters , Taymuras Henvri and Kajaim( Pronounced as Kai-eem) Al’Hashim.
The names I picked sounded to close to the other characters names and that might get confusing for readers and I like the two new names a lot better.
I also came up with three other characters for my story as well and those characters are:
Zaphkiel Ryvers , Chozen Ques (Zen Ques) and Zartaj Hael ( Taj Hael).
If it comes close to fittin then ima gittin.
LOL!
Santee, Best vid out there
Thank you
🤠
🤠
Santee, good vid, can you do a episode on your new job and and your role there ?
Y'all really wanna hear about that?
hell yeah !
@@ArizonaGhostriders
@@ArizonaGhostridersYes, definitely!
Hey Santee, How about one on the types of cast iron carried on the Chuck wagon? Just an Old camp cook wanting to know.
Great idea!
Thanks again Santeria, another fun educational video.
You're welcome.
I was at a New Years Eve Party. I got to the bar and a "Local" asked me what Ranch I worked. Of Couse I was in a George Jones Shirt. Wool Vest and Ariat boots. I said i don't work a Ranch... He thought i owned a ranch. I had to tell him I sold the clothes at the local RCC. lol
That works!
Santee, thank you for another great episode and really enjoyed it.
My pleasure!
Santee, have you done one on the shape of Hat Crowns? Canadian, Gambler, Open Road, Cattleman's, Gus, and John Bull. I used to shape hats. Feel free to reach out to me. I'm happy to help.
Thanks. I've mentioned them but not all in one video. One day!
Good explanation. To me growing up on the farm, ranchers are more equivalent to the old west cowboy than the modern rodeo cowboy. Not saying the rodeo cowboys aren't also true cowboys because most are but people are seeing them at their job and that is just part of the cowboy life. It's like saying you don't look like a doctor because you are not wearing scrubs.
I get it.
Most gun fights in the old west could have been prevented.
If only the city planners had made towns big enough for everyone.
I'm going remember that one. 😂
Ha!
Cowboys made sure a hell of a lot of people got fed and didn’t starve !!
yes
Now do one on old west outlaws and modern outlaws 😅
🤣
Saw Bill sipping on Bulleit Bourbon. Knew he had good taste.
He likes it ok
That’s what separates the plowboys from the cowboys!
Carrots and beets.
Good morning Arizona Ghost Riders. Ted from Texas. I really hope to make it out to your state before the year is done. I enjoyed the video and I hope to see one on Civil War soldiers Union and Confederate after the war in the West thanks man be safe
You're welcome.
Another great and informative video as always. While wearing my Confederate uniform trousers, blousy button pullover shirt and slouch hat, minus my coat, going into a store while on the way to an event, people thought I was Amish or Mennonite. I normally dress modern cowboy style but prefer the old style best.
I get it on the way home from work. Stopping to get something in the grocery store.
Were drawstrings common on hats of the old west? If not, how did the cowboys keep them on in high winds or when galloping?
Some cowboys will tell you that if a hat fits perfectly it won't fly off. Well, I've seen the wind blow off hats that "fit perfectly" so I guess that's not how physics works.
Drawstrings, stampede strings, bonnet strings are different words for the thing that keeps your hat on your head in hight winds...and they are used.
