I had a bunch of wannabes get mad at me for explaining to them that being a cowboy was more than fancy clothes. It's a lifestyle and a way to make a living that's not for most. Most of them had never been on a horse, worked horses or cattle, slept on horseback or in a bedroll or stayed up all night waiting for and helping a calf be born. It was a hard life and I wouldn't trade the memories for anything.
I swear you episodes are getting better all the time. This was a great subject. From the past to the present.
This is true. I was recently in Nashville and took a stroll down broadway. They literally wear cowboy hats and boots as a costume. I’m sure it’s removed and tossed into the closest as soon as they get back home.

My mom was a cowgirl at heart and loved the old west. She actually used to raise horses before I was born, back when the family had enough land for it but where the pasture used to be was where the house we lived in was built. I always heard from both her and my birth dad that if they had stayed together I'd be living on a farm somewhere. My dad is the kinda guy that likes to grow his own food while my mom knew more about livestock since it's something both she grew up with.

It’s hard wanting to be a cowboy and not being able to be one in the traditional sense. I work an office job, or work out in the construction when needed. I haven’t ridden a horse in years, and I don’t ranch work. I always get hate for it, but I love the work ethic and i do my best to live up to a certain standard.

I grew up in the 50's and 60's on various ranches in Eastern Oregon, Idaho and Montana. The Montana Ranch we were on is one you see on the TV series Yellowstone I haven't watched it. We were there for most of a year an I started school in Darby, MT. I had to quit the Cowboy trade because the kids needed shoes and doctors sometimes at the same time. At 68 I still miss the work. All our clothes including the hat were practical and had a purpose.

Interesting I had a friend who grew up on a ranch in OK in the 1940s and early 1950s until he was drafted. He explained the use of every piece of equipment working Cow Punchers used.

My dad trained as a bookmaker but couldn’t get the lasts. The boot companies wouldn’t sell them. He made my mom and him a pair then nothing until he made a bunch of clown shoes for his fellow Shriners after he retired. So I never learned to make boots. He also had a bunch of tailor made western shirts. They didn’t have no flowers or bright colors but they’d a made a movie cowboy proud. They fit me when I was 12 but by 14 I couldn’t get my arms in them. Think a nephew got ‘em. They were heavy wool and definitely not work shirts but stylin. Great informative video.

I inherited my taste in denim snap button shirts from a grandfather who was a welder. They kept horses and I used to love going into the old barn and smelling the leather saddles and harness.

Cowboys were the workers and ranchers that conquered and tamed the West, their clothes were adjusted for the work not exactly conceived for it. A good example is the hat and its evolution from wool to straw. As always, good video Santee!

I bought a modern straw cowboy hat that had the typical bent upwards brim for my work as a farm worker, harvesting, weeding and planting vegetables bailing hay. I kept getting sunburn on the sides of my face. So i bought a new hat and changed the shape of the brim so it was flat and i never got sunburn anymore. It ended up looking like a bolera hat/ sombrero de huaso .Much more pretty in my eyes than the modern cowboy hat shape.

I wasn’t a ‘Cowboy’ but I did work with cattle some in my youth. How well I remember hauling hay from ‘can see to can’t’. I can readily see the functionality of the clothing of the period.

Its cool that every generation of cowboys has clothes and each of them had an improvement that the last one lacked, i remember my grandfather used to have a duster coat and a leather cowboy hat,and he's a horse breeder

Ridin fence I've always had a rifle in a scabbard hangin off my saddle. Usually right side under the stirrup leather attached to the skirt tie anchors on the tree.

i like to think that the old west cowboys would approve of the changes as it’s both comfort and practicality behind most of the changes, with the boots being retained simply for style choice as they’re not any getter than steel toe boots for working out of quads and trucks

It makes sense, back then you wore what you had, what you could get. Now days we have some many options. I appreciate living in a time where I have more choice in what I can wear. I swear looking at the old west is like looking into a window or picture of the past distant, unrelateable by modern standards, but fascinating nonetheless.
That's an important take away. The practicality of an early time when there wasn't a Banana Republic in every town.

One of my great grandfathers was born in 1883. He ran away from his home in Missouri when he was 16 and hopped a train to Colorado. There he became a cowboy on a ranch for most of a decade and later homesteaded, married and raised a family. I have a couple of pictures of him, neither is in cowboy attire but I did get to meet him as a child in the 1970s. He was born into a world of steam engines and horse and buggy transportation and lived to see men walk on the moon. Must have been a bizarre experience.
I'd say that's pretty amazing.
Mine too, born in 1890 and lived till 1980, saw history.

My uncle that bought me my first pair of boots from John's Boots from Houston, Tx. once told me the difference between a real cowboy & a drug store cowboy is that real cowboys had the manure (bs) on the outside of their boots. Another fine start to a Saturday Santee, thank you.

I used to be a fan of shirt snaps, but I have changed my mind on them for one reason, ease of repair. When a button pops off it's usually as simple as sewing it back on, but when a snap rips out it usually takes shirt fabric with it.

my dad and grandad were working cowboys, i went on to 2 other careers after school but still dress western, and I have to laugh, every now and then I somehow end up with a button down shirt, usually end up sewing 2 or 3 buttons back on the first time i take it off😁

My favorite part of helping friends brand their cows was the huge feast they would put on for the help after the branding was over. Plus the guys would all get together and bring out their latest toys ( firearms) they purchased since the last branding and we'd get into some target practice. Those were fun times.

Not ranch related, but hat related: My Dad, Grandfather and Uncle went fishing in Quebec, in the 80's. Each was wearing a short crowned, dark green felt brimmed hat.
In a remote town one day, they stopped for breakfast. As they walked together to the restaurant, one little boy loudly said, "Look Mama! COWBOYS !!"

Interesting video, Santee in video jeans of the 19th century were mainly worn for miners for durability even though Levi’s & Wrangler jeans were made in 1890’s. Every year for long time the cowboy’s yesterday to present finally got their praise called National Day of Cowboys paying respect to all. Rodeo’s then got started for ranchers to brand cattle, and compete other ranches. Payson was one town for that. We are holding longest continuous rodeo tonight 131 yrs.

@@KidYuma1880 I know they hired a Polish tailor to design them for rodeo hands, higher in the rise more room in the thigh, and Levi's were around much longer , most cowpunchers I knew since the 1950s wore 501 Levi's, many still do Blue Bell put Wranglers on the market 1947, I've seen many an old photo of guys wearing Levi's, many people don't know men's pants didn't have belt loops till the 20th century.

I’m definitely going to be adding a combination of cowboys and pirates to my story’s old west frontier and cassette futurism/retrofuturistic paranormal setting.
There’s a setting in the scene that I’m currently writing called the Chetenka canyon and the chenali river, most people on Alessaeia Isle just call it symmetry breach ravine, due to the paranormal entities known as ‘symmetries’ that roam the area.
The native Alessaeiaen tribe ‘the Chetànèskah/Chetàni, live in the area surrounding the canyon, and they will not step foot in the canyon, they say it’s a place of negative energy and hauntingly cursed.
They call it the place where spirits dwell/the spirits nest.
There’s a sign at the entrance that reads “ warning , here there be spirits , enter and traverse at your own risk”.
Today I’ll also be introducing one of the frontier cowboy-pirate characters into my story.
That characters name is Thackery Baer-Rivers and friends name is Creekson /Creelson Marshall-fletcher.
Their nicknames are Thax and Creek/Cree and they’re friends with Captain Thetch Lyndbek-Sparring , Astrael and her assistant Arcturus Nanouk/Nanouk Arcturus and his nickname is Anou Arcturus.
In the story during chapter 1 the Chetenka canyon is where Mercia Hawkins, Lunoa Casper and Mhaevo Casselini must go to if they want to find gnarled root cave and gain access to the Liminality chasm depths that lie very far below both the world of Tarmynea-VideoWorld and the subterranean dimensional space anomaly of Kenopsiapolis.
I hope you all really like the bit of story details and characters from my book that I shared.

I thought of better names for my story’s two frontier cowboy-pirate characters , Taymuras Henvri and Kajaim( Pronounced as Kai-eem) Al’Hashim.
The names I picked sounded to close to the other characters names and that might get confusing for readers and I like the two new names a lot better.
I also came up with three other characters for my story as well and those characters are:
Zaphkiel Ryvers , Chozen Ques (Zen Ques) and Zartaj Hael ( Taj Hael).
If it comes close to fittin then ima gittin.

Good explanation. To me growing up on the farm, ranchers are more equivalent to the old west cowboy than the modern rodeo cowboy. Not saying the rodeo cowboys aren't also true cowboys because most are but people are seeing them at their job and that is just part of the cowboy life. It's like saying you don't look like a doctor because you are not wearing scrubs.
I get it.
Most gun fights in the old west could have been prevented.

Another great and informative video as always. While wearing my Confederate uniform trousers, blousy button pullover shirt and slouch hat, minus my coat, going into a store while on the way to an event, people thought I was Amish or Mennonite. I normally dress modern cowboy style but prefer the old style best.
I get it on the way home from work. Stopping to get something in the grocery store.
Were drawstrings common on hats of the old west? If not, how did the cowboys keep them on in high winds or when galloping?
Some cowboys will tell you that if a hat fits perfectly it won't fly off. Well, I've seen the wind blow off hats that "fit perfectly" so I guess that's not how physics works.
Drawstrings, stampede strings, bonnet strings are different words for the thing that keeps your hat on your head in hight winds...and they are used.
