I liked that the ‘jock’ wasn’t portrayed as the bully/villain and actually befriended Rocky, instead of the stereotype that kids who are good at sport are always the bully.
I watched this movie with a buddy on a trip in a Motel 6 in my early 20s. We were both really impressed. And I think we were both on love with Cher. She rocked it. What a talent!
The real Rocky Dennis started school late because vision problems limited his ability to read. He definitely would have been a little older than some of his classmates.
If he had lived, Rocky would have graduated from High School (not Junior High) in 1979 or 1980. Not sure why but the producers moved the time setting of the movie forward past Rocky's actual date of death in October 1978.
He also started school a few years late because he had such difficulty learning to read because of vision problems, so technically in the movie he should still be in middle school.
