I felt it too. If he is dead there is no other reason for me to watch the next 10 episodes. After Ragnar died it felt like the only other characters who were as interesting as him were Björn and Ubbe. I still want to know what will happen to Ubbe but Björn is the only character who matters at this point.

These are good ideas, I myself believe the leader on the horse is him, because he is wearing a hood which none of the others do, the whole thing being to dreaming and sudden with no relief would make it bad drama if so . Therefore, it is a defeat by Ivar but they regroup probably with the rest of Norway who didn't show for Harold, the false king.
