    I get it, Trent is going to do it all, tons of respect. I'm sure the drywall will turn out well too.
    That said, gosh if you were going to hire a professional, drywallers would be the one to get. they are fairly cheap, likely to do a better end job on something visible forever, and done in a couple of days instead of a month...

  • @kend1053
    @kend1053 2 года назад +66

    So...you've got to be sick of drywall suggestions by this point...but I'm wondering why you haven't put all your metal corner beads on and why you're not bedding your tape on the first coat over the seams? I know it's gonna look great when you're done. It's just hard to watch when I wish I could help. Keep up the good work. Get that bazooka loaded!

    • @markadavis

      I had the same thought but thought it must be different in USA or something. The tape gun he bought prefills and tapes in one go and then you just skim the excess and bed the tape with a tape knife. I love the channel and love when they learn, but they are going to be adding a week to the job for no reason.

      @Ken D. I'm all for trying and all but trying to reinvent something like metal corner beads is just plain wrong. Even old style lath and plaster had metal corners to use as a guide for finishing. Heck if u dont like square, there are even preformed rounded paper corners that get set with first pass of mud similar to an inside corner but trying to do a corner "artistically" with nothing won't work. But it's good for making another vlog about all the time it's taking to sand down and redo the corners ......

    I'm a retired painting and drywall contractor. I've been watching these videos and trying to just let you do the job and learn as you go. BUT YOU NEED TO STOP. I don't know what youtube video you watched or who told you to do drywall that way but you are tripling the amount of time this job will take and doing things that will give you a crappy finished job. You used way too many screws but that is already done and it isn't a job killer. You should be taping the seams first. Put a thin layer of spackle down on each side then lay the tape down and another thin layer on top. Then pull the knife down with more pressure on the outside edge to taper the spackle and minimize sanding. ALL outside corners should have corner-bead. No need to be filling in seams and corners, just tape. When you fill in the inside corners (as where the ceiling meets the wall) you will prevent the folded tape from having a true 90-degree edge and make it look sloppy. I am telling you this because I know you want to have a finished job you can be proud of. Much of a construction job can have mistakes but usually get covered up and no one notices but you are into the finishing stage that people will see. I hope you take this in the spirit it is meant. You will shorten this job considerably if you stop and regroup and take the time to learn a few basic skills. Good luck.

      If you use mesh tape.... you can avoid the need to pre-fill the gaps ... Mesh allows the mud to fill the gaps and makes things go way faster..... I agree.... only sand for the final coat... at this point, you would already have one layer on... instead of not having started yet.

    • @billmandaue2168
      @billmandaue2168 2 года назад +4

      Agreed. Get some yellow grid tape to lay over the seams, and slap on the mud over the top of the tape. What you are doing is filling in the depressed areas built into the edges of the sheetrock. That will cause you to have raised seams, which in turn, will cause you a lot more work trying to feather out the seams.

  • @kylepetersen8807
    @kylepetersen8807 2 года назад +126

    Stop “pre-filling” seems. Just tape it, you’re not only wasting time but adding another layer of mud under the tape potentially making it harder to actually cover the tape smoothly. That’s why the edges of drywall are thinner. So you can tape and cover the tape effectively. Same goes for near corners. You have no corner bead on, so don’t slap mud where corner bead is going.

    You can stop pre filling everything. Pre filling is just taking up space the tape takes. Tape it, wipe the excess mud out and spot screws. Next day, fill it and spot screws. Third day scrap with mud knife any large globs, chunks, or mounds and put on a nice tight (thinned down mud) finish coat and spot screws. Fourth day, sand everything. For regular joints tape and wipe away excess with 6 inch knife. Fill coat on regular joint just 8 inch knife. Finish coat on regular joint use 10 inch knife. Butt joints use 6 inch knife just like regular joints. Butt joints on fill coat run 8 or 10 inch knife on each side of tape leaving center 1/2 inch of tape exposed. Final coat on butt joints use 12 inch knife in three passes, one down center barely covering tape and one down each side so the butt joint width should be around 28 inches wide on finish coat. Use 12 inch knife as a flat level and check for light under the edge over your joints to see if you filled enough or not.

    I’ve never seen a professional taper per mud the joints. The edge of the drywall is made like that so the tape sits in the mud below the finished surface of the drywall. Otherwise when you sand you’ll sand into the tape, or have a huge bump at every seam. If that makes any sense.

I get he's not doing it the best way but you don't have to be so harsh. He's a great guy.and he listens to alot of advice he's given. So I guess I just don't see a reason to make him feel like crap. Idk just my opinion.

      @@raybran7865 nothing wrong with learning! But there’s a million RUclips videos out there! No one muds the joints before taping them, he’s filling in the recessed part where the tape sits, once he puts the tape on he’s creating a mound. If he doesn’t know what he’s doing putting coats on it he will only make it look worse and you will see every joint in that house.

    ALLIE, YOUR HAIR IS ADORABLE!!! 🥰
    ETA: Absolutely the most important thing is that you can still put it up! I cut my hair super short a few years ago, and thought I was tired of ponytails. But I’ve since learned that my hair HAS to be long enough to pull back and away. Ponytails FTW! (Mine is straight and fine, so buns don’t work for me. 🙁)

    Gonna be a long, long time doing the mud like that. Corner bead needs put on before any mud. You don't prefill the gaps. You do the screw holes as you tape the seams, so you can use up the dirty mud.

    • @rickschneder1994
      @rickschneder1994 2 года назад +2

      Totally agree never heard of pre filling the cracks. Install corner bead then tape joints that's why you have a banjo fill screws as you go. I've been in construction over 40 years and have never seen it done this way before

    Trent, don't fill the seams and as a new guy sand between coats. use a pad with a screen on a pole. set up a fan in a window blowing out (everything outside will be covered in dust so choose wisely) and set up a fan to blow across the room to the other fan. wear masks

    Are you going to use corner bead on the corners of where the sheetrock meets? It is a metal strip that gets nailed to the corners then mudded over? It protects the edges...walls and the boxed in window edges...

      Thinking the same thing. Definitely need corner bead and it should be installed before mudding.

    My GOD! read a book, consult a drywaller, HIRE a finishing contractor! I've found it so painful to watch you smear the drywall mud. Please hire the mudding, sanding and cleanup by professionals. You'll be in the house before the winter snow if you do so NOW. Sorry to be so critical, but not only is this harder, but it will not look like you desire. I admire the work you have done, but get help with this. Wishing you all the best.

    I think finishing Sheetrock is one of the hardest trades. Mad props to the people who do it for a living! It’s backbreaking work and if it isn’t perfect you won’t find out until you start painting. Or at least that’s been my experience in the past when I put my big-girl panties on and did it myself. Never again. I’ll leave that to the pros. I know Trent will do his best and by the time he’s done he’ll know how to do it- isn’t that the way it always is when we try something new lol.

    Little tip for people when storing your left over mud in a bucket. After your done scraping the sides down use a sponge to wipe the inside wall and rim clean. Then ring the excess sponge water into the bucket. Having a little water on the top of the mud for storage will guarantee no hard flakes when you go to use it again. Having dried mud when you reopen the bucket is the worst. Tip#2 I always use just a quick spray of WD40 on all my knives after I wash and dry. Rust will start to form over time after use. You will then have rust in your mud which you definitely don't want.

    Hey guys. Love your channel. Just thought I'd let you know that the tape gun you bought prefills and tapes in one go. Then just skim off the excess and bed the tape in with the tape knife. I hope this reaches you in time and you haven't added days to the job unnecessarily. Keep up the great work and congratulations on the baby.
