Now that the Nikon Df is actually available, Will you please do a good review of it with pictures. In any case, I appreciate your balanced presentation of this camera. You presented the good and the bad in a balanced way that will help buyers consider the camera for themselves. If only other RUclips reviewers were as responsible as you are. Thank you for great information!
Great review, it's absolute a pleasure to see you so enthousiastic about this superb camera that gives me a nostalgic feeling. It is certainly a great tribute to the history of Nikon, but above all a tribute to all the photographers who registered our modern history on small format Nikon F series cameras under difficult conditions! Thanks!
Watching this video in 2022, Chris looks so young, I have a Df and it’s the only DSLR I kept, thinking buying a Zfc to keep it company. Df is a love it or hate it model. For an old guy like me it reminds me first film Nikon and the images are great even in todays standard.
Dear Jordan Drake: As you so accurately pointed out, this camera has video the same way the old Nikon F5 had. They even shot the commercial for it with it if you remember: Nikon F5 commercial
I think it's worth noting that the look of a camera is actually important when doing street photography though, the Df old look is much less intimidating than a d800.
To everyone mentioning the D4 and this being good because it has the same sensor: While this has the (admittedly good) D4 sensor and processor, it's NOT a D4. A D4 is NOT $6k just because of its sensor. It's because of the shutter, the flash sync speed, the support for wireless flash, the 10FPS burst (compared to 4.5 here) I'm not saying that the D4 sensor is bad by any stretch, but that this is not the "less expensive D4" some seem to make it out to be. Just my $0.02
I am not a pro & don't want the overpriced blob of one. I do however have my share of disposable income & HATE to be "like all the others" when it comes to all stuff. Pshht... FSS, 10FPS, wireless flash? Not something I need so this camera is just my SPEED! So while I take my hobby to a fun new level, this is the camera for me! I will drive to get one in my '71 Toyota Corona to boot, while I leave my Infinity at home;~`) I love people who live in negativity and jump to share their dropping $0.02 value... its time to S.M.I.L.E. for you dude, S...ee M...yself I...ndulge L...life's E...vents I have the $ for the D4, but am buying this with no hesitation at all... because I'm like that, so deal with it & if your perceived clever comments come to mind... save EM because it is a D4 in a package that fits me! I don't need/want a Ferarri... I need/want a Toyota GT2000! (look it up!) Sorry you spent too much on your camera;~`)
If you don't need the features, the Df is a good option. The D4 chip gives good images. I wasn't saying that it's a bad camera. I was saying was the D4 is a top-tier sports camera, the Df is not. Enjoy the Df ;-)
The main problem with the DF is the price, if you take a look at Sony's A7 and A7r they are both mirorless camera systems, 24 megapixels on the A7 and 36 on the A7r, not to mention that that the A7r has no optical low pass filter, and both still cheaper than the DF. But the DF has the same nikon D4 sensor and a great low light performance, so it's a lot better in low light, but it is worth 2750 us Dollars? If I had to choose between the A7/r or the DF I'll probably go with the A7/r
Great video. you were the first I think that reviewed the actual product. not talk about it from rumor sites. I wish Canon would make a similar retro looking DSLR
You guys are killing it with the hands on lately. How do you guys get all the latest stuff SO early AND get to spend so much time with it to have enough for these videos?? Amazing.
Looks more like a D600 with some silver color splashes and leather stuck on. The control dials on top are really appealing though, brings you the full control of the camera. I just wish they did something special with the viewfinder like some sort of split image focusing for manual focusing. Thanks for the video guys!
Chris, waiting for your full review on DF. The only negative point for me is the price, it is way higher than A7 for example. I wonder if you would be able to do a comparison video between A7, 55mm and DF, 50mm
I see reviews all the time with pre-production models and photographs being published from them. You have to ask yourself: what are we looking at here? It's a camera. And what does a camera do? It takes pictures. So I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say that the quality pictures it produces is the main topic that should be reviewed - closely followed by all the other categories of course.
We have a generation gap for sure with this camera. The younger in general have grown up with the more loaded the better with all the bells and whistles now needed mentality, only to always want "MORE" at every turn... I have owned a couple simple all manual SLR's + 2 1/4 for over a 25 year span, and learned to take great photos w/o a computer on board with some primes. So this Df is refreshing to me. Some will never get it. The D4 sensor is a great practical sensor for getting the hard shots in real world shooting, not to be taken in by mere specs from shooting stills using a trypod at f8 with no wind.
Question for @thecamerastoretv and @chrisniccolls - you have reviewed this camera, as well as the Fujifilm X-T3 - do you recommend the T-X3 over the Nikon Df?
nice to see a real photographer's camera again, retro or not; Some might dig the Pentax/Ricoh K3 for the lower price point; So Canon, you finally feel outnumbered?
with no manual focusing assist (they could have at least had peaking), i'm not sure why i would by this, if this had split prism it would have been a killer.
Nice Camera but you don't need to change the Viewfinders like the F3HP had? You would take away from the Body style! No Video is fine, it's strictly a Photo Camera and that's what makes it Great!
Great review and love the design! However, the storage media wasn't mentioned here so had to look it up. Only one SD, SDHC, SDXC slot. Since I already have the D700 and the D4, can't use my plethora of CF cards. :(
This looks great! It is SO MUCH EASIER to set shutter speed, ISO, and exposure compensation with dials like these. And with a lens with an aperture ring, you can easily set that too. With my Nikon FM3A I could set aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation (and focus at infinity) - all without even seeing the camera! If I wanted to change the exposure by a certain number of stops, I could do it BY FEEL without having to watch the numbers in the viewfinder. A could go on.....
My Nikon F2AS was my main 35 and my Black FE was my backup. Good old days :-) Aaaah! Now nikon needs this idea but in the F2AS body. The price must come down on this camera.
For those who use D800 and above, they would crazy about it. But those who jump from crops to ff, they might hesitate. I started using Nikon since in 90's, the F3 was best camera for the shop. Those retro style of Nikon is really impressive, however Nikon should also correct the color in their new line high end DSLRs to take back the first place from Canon.
Again! Awesome Guys!! I think I'll hold off to see what fuji has in store for there next Xpro body. I have a D800 and D7100..... but this is quite nice.
Nice looks - however Df will be a sales flop - body about same size a D610 but Df has no video ! Df should be Mirror-Less - Price way to high for average shooter and way to manual and even ProSumer will find price to high as they can get the Sony A7/R much cheaper and more features and higher MP. The old Pros will say why should I buy the Df with less features then their D610, D800 or D4. Df is in the Pro price range but not many Pros will get the Df just for looks. So yes it has great looks but not a solution to get a smaller lighter body. I think the Sony A7/R will be much more attractive to buyers - Nice video from you guys - always fun to watch and good reviews
Well, the DF is for the purists and Nikon fanboys. The target market is already kinda small to begin with, and Nikon most likely knows this. The question is, will anyone buy it? 1.) It has the napkin focusing system of the D600/610 2.) No video but has HDMI output (doesn't matter if it is clean) which means it CAN do video if you have an Atomos Ninja or the likes. 3.) Has an intervelometer, which is video 4.) Battery life that is longer than the Sony A7/R 5.) Still fairly big (obviously bigger than the A7/R So... other than point number 4, it looks like a disappointment for purists and something you would rather skip since it costs more than the D600/610 which offers more (and from the same company who made the DF, D4, D800/E, etc...) and is basically a D700 on steroids, but not even remotely as good as the D700 as a "purist" camera.
Deso Fire The people will buy it out of nostalgie and emotion. Most of these people will already have a D800 or something else. Don't think it will sell a lot. That is why Nikon is asking such a huge premium. Since this camera does not use the sensor in the way it should be. I wonder why they didn't use the 24mp or 36mp(Nikon d600/610 and D800/D800e). These sensors are newer and better (according to DXOmark) The advantage of the D4 sensor is the quick readout. Something that is not used with a max 5.5fps.
Great review, as usual. Next time, try it with something larger than a 50/1.8. I'm not thinking 70-200/2.8, as I don't see owners using that type of lens (plus, you support the lens, not the body, with something that big), but rather larger primes (85/1.8 or even 1.4, 105mm) and wide/standard zooms (16/17-35, 24-70/2.8, etc). I'm curious if the grip works for anything other than the teeny-tiny. That aside, I'd consider one for closer to the price of my D600, or at least D610. For now, I'll pass.
***** Hi Jakub, I know what you are saying... for some reason it just gets under my skin. I have had friends who said I was crazy as well. No for the funny part... I have a friend who wants to move up to a D3- he hates video more than I do. I was told that I would get some good money for my D3 if I sold it to him... I do like the D4... but we already know why I don't have one. I will now mull over the major differences between the 2 bodies and decide if I want to move up ..
A really cool idea. I like the look of the classic Nikon/Canon. The problem is the price. You'd think keeping video out would lower the price a little. This seems like it is marketed to hipsters with a lot of disposable income. Knock $1000 off the price and you have a winner.
They should have made a digital back that would replace the standard film back of your old FE/FM instead. A lot cheaper, and true to the original bodies, because you're still using the original body. Don't need an LCD, or even a memory card for it. Just a USB socket or even wireless to get the files.
i don't really care if it doesn't have a video option in it since tbh i rarely use it, as long as it takes great performance in taking photos I like the retro look and all but that price.. damn
Things I like about the Df. 1. The top plate and dials 2. The D4 sensor (Though is the low light performance of the 16mp senor that much better than the 24mp sensor, DXO suggests not). Things that annoy me about the Df 1. It is a D610 with a D4 sensor 2. Similar construction quality as the D610 3. Same AF as the D610 4. Same maximum shutter speed as the D610 5. Same flash sync speed as the D610 6. Massively over priced compared to the D610 (which is expensive compared to when the D600)
Got to agree, Would love to see both Canon and Nikon come with a decent mirrorless. The 1 series though fun are a bit underwhelming in low light. And the Eos M was just a joke at launch. Canon could easily up their game with the 70D sensor and some new lenses. While they frustratingly haven't done that yet. Nikon has to get a new mount since 1-inch while great in camera's like the Rx100 is just too small in interchangeable lens camera's. It might work for Video. Jordan can give better information on that topic.
I liked the ending about no video... funny! Camera is beautiful, but seems a bit bulkier than I'd like, and I don't get how you can say that it is good value? $3k for a 16MP full frame? with no video? compared to Sony's new A7 that costs almost half that, has the same features AND it does video. I don't know what Nikon is thinking?
If this was the size of an old film slr, this would be an interesting camera. There is no reason it couldn't be like that, I think Nikon made a mistake when they decided to recycle parts from their other dslrs in this. They could and should have redesigned the parts to fit in a slimmer, properly retro body.
Brilliant preview as always. Unlike Fuji, Nikon can do great video so the omission is a step backwards. The size is not exactly compact either so I'll take a pass on this one and wait for the next iteration instead.
Lot bigger than my Nikons F3, FE 2 and FM :-(... A nice touch would have been to but the red "label" vertical like on the F3 since the wiew finder looks like the one on a F3.
Inability to change focus screen is very strange for a retro DSLR. If it isn't optimized for MF, it isn't retro enough. I'm happy Nikon is offering an alternative design, it is much needed in the big DSLR market which has gone stale. A similar concept for Canon EF mount, old school focus screen, and great video would be a purchase hard to resist. Honestly I hope the Sony A7 pair will dominate sales as it seems to be the most useful cameras released in a long time.
coming back to this ten years after watching ZF hands on review from Chris Niccolle is amazing

I have the Nikon Df for years and I use it only for shooting video.
You're the first person to say something positive about this camera - and actually, I think it's really cool.
Plenty of pros love and use it and say they do loudly. It's divisive.
Wow , Awesome ....I really enjoyed Jordan`s take ! :)

As usual the review is good and laced with a humorous rant at the end
Next on the line up is Daguerreotypes with a D4 sensor :) Great deal at about $5,000! Now that's pure photography :)
I see reviews all the time with pre-production models and photographs being published from them. You have to ask yourself: what are we looking at here? It's a camera. And what does a camera do? also same shutter as on the D600, i am very interested to see how that works out..
Last 40 seconds were awesome! Best part!
wow tucking that D4 under your armpit at 4:27....and no neck straps anywhere.. rock on dude
I think this is the first video of someone shooting a D4 one-handed! Nice work!! And Jordan, you should rant more often! Really hilarious!
you guys are just always ahead of others
Wish they'd do something like this for the next Pentax model de-crippled K mount would be a winner.
Video capabilities review is such a WIN! :D
Another insightful and entertaining review. Many thanks, TCS. Keep up the excellent work!
I got the Black body one, and so far.. pretty solid!
omg you guys are awesome.. anew camera gets announced and you already make a preview with having a pre-production model.
It'd be nice to see Canon come up with an answer for this.
Wow, Jordan is now funnier than Kai, now. I actually laughed out loud. I love TCS.
you always get to test my dream cameras. first the leica monochrom and now this. i am so jealous right now.
LOVE Jordan's Rant!
Awesome combination of the D4 sensor in a "classic" SLR body with manual controls. Looks promising.
Already winter there?
depends if u want video then sony, but photo wise both will give you great photos
I'm with you on this. I agree that aesthetic is subjective, but the lines on the Fujis (X-Pro1, X100S) just speak more to me.
Hi Jordan! I was wondering if Atomos Ninja 2 can record the liveview feed on Nikon D700? Thanks!
This camera looks beautiful! If I had the money I'd definitely buy this.
We owe it all to you Chris! Your Klout score just went up a couple points.
For the first time (and probably last time), I made the exact same word-for-word comment with Jordan Drake.
that is a beautiful camera
Hey come on Chris. What about the real review of this camera? Waiting for it.
I have been thinking about getting a back-up for my D800 and having the low light option of the D4 sensor is very appealing :)
Metal body in black is actually very old school. The Nikon F, F2, FM, etc all came in black and in smaller quantity.
Question for @thecamerastoretv and @chrisniccolls - you have reviewed this camera, as well as the Fujifilm X-T3 - do you recommend the T-X3 over the Nikon Df?
from what I've read, it seems that the 50mm f/1.8G only got cosmetic changes to match the retro-looks of the Nikon Df
nice to see a real photographer's camera again, retro or not;
Some might dig the Pentax/Ricoh K3 for the lower price point;
So Canon, you finally feel outnumbered?
with no manual focusing assist (they could have at least had peaking), i'm not sure why i would by this, if this had split prism it would have been a killer.

My Nikon F2AS was my main 35 and my Black FE was my backup. Good old days :-) Aaaah! Now nikon needs this idea but in the F2AS body. The price must come down on this camera.

Best preview by far - well done guys !
If there isn't a split image or micro prism focusing screen, then what is the point in being able to use non-autofocus lenses??
holy cow, had no idea this cam existed. What to do now. As a lifelong Nikkormat EL owner/lover....
Classic come back very nice nikon df
The review of the (non-existing) video was epic. Had me dying.
A7 VS DF.
What's your choice.
I'll choose a7.
Done.
What the hell ? Snow ? I also live in Canada and there's no snow so far this year... Were this shot last year or what ? Where it was film ?
Again! Awesome Guys!!
I think I'll hold off to see what fuji has in store for there next Xpro body.

So we get a D4 sensor, D4 processor, a body the size of the d600 but 1000$ more to remove the video? Seems like a good deal
not.
I think so. I don't want video in my DSLR I bought a PRISTINE D3 last summer just for that reason.
*****
Hi Jakub,
I know what you are saying... for some reason it just gets under my skin. I have had friends who said I was crazy as well. No for the funny part... HAHAHHA Best review of video mode EVER!!!
Kelvin Vine
Was there a follow up video, where someone is actually using the camera?
They should have made a digital back that would replace the standard film back of your old FE/FM instead. A lot cheaper, and true to the original bodies, because you're still using the original body. Don't need an LCD, or even a memory card for it. Just a USB socket or even wireless to get the files.
Excellent video.
Thank you for the great videos!
No manual focus aids is a deal breaker for me. Would love to use this with older manual focus glass.
i don't really care if it doesn't have a video option in it since tbh i rarely use it, as long as it takes great performance in taking photos
I like the retro look and all but that price.. damn
BEST video mode ever!!!
You guys are on fire these days. Sony A7/A7R field test and then this?
Great review. Thanks
i'd love this camera. d4 sensor, old school dials like my fm2 and fm3a.
AF module point from D600? Can't swap out focusing screen? Bummer :(
Things I like about the Df.
1. The top plate and dials
2. The D4 sensor (Though is the low light performance of the 16mp senor that much better than the 24mp sensor, DXO suggests not).
Things that annoy me about the Df
1. It is a D610 with a D4 sensor
2. Similar construction quality as the D610
3. Same AF as the D610
4. Same maximum shutter speed as the D610
5. Same flash sync speed as the D610
6. Massively over priced compared to the D610 (which is expensive compared to when the D600)
Epic rant FTW Jordan!!!
Wait so what is the price range of this camera? I was about to sell all my nikon and go fuji but d4 sensor/processor is amazing
I'd rather see Nikon competing with a proper mirror less rather than a retro looking camera which is just a slightly cut down D4.
Got to agree,
Would love to see both Canon and Nikon come with a decent mirrorless.
They could and should have redesigned the parts to fit in a slimmer, properly retro body.
very cool, I just hope that Canon doesn't try to compete with a retro digital AE-1 with a 7D sensor...
Great video....
Does it have the same live view issue that d600/d7100 have or it is a real live view like the d800's?
