Ackchyually (I hope it is not wrong, it is what I understood from reading about vrms :D) The high side mosfet is the one providing/sourcing the current -> in the early days there wasn't even a low side fet, there was just a diode, but diodes are not efficient enough to discharge the inductor when the high side is switched off. So when you want a higher voltage and increase the duty cycle, the high side has to provide power for longer, while the low side is still only there for "cleaning up afterwards" :D. Oh and it used to be that (this should still be true today?): comparable high side (pmos) have worse (higher) RDS(on) resistance so I guess they get hotter and with all of that more strained and blow easier?

Still running Maxwell GTX Titan X to this day. Reference cooler and Firestrike chokes at +130 on the core and I've settled with +400 on the memory. Never really bothered too much with it until lately. I'm gonna quit while I'm slightly ahead. Thanks for the videos.

I had on sli 2 of those but the evga hydro copper. *Switched for 2x 2080ti hydro copper ftw3 ultra*. The titans from new condition never clocked over 1420mhz and 4000mhz mem.(stable). (The card was maxing out 1482~ not stable at all) +45mV helped slightly but anything above was just heat. The cards never exceeded 52c max core temp at any stress. But suddenly random crashes in games took place. Was passing any stress test(24h furmark). But not that happy with games. Tried stock, underclocked, undervolt, only power target helped some. Tuned it to 98% kept the crashing away for longer. Disabled sli and tried separately finally figured that the second card was failing . (New windows new m.2 new drivers) Changed pcie slots, i run it in a separate psu i had fans blowing air on the backplate... nothing! that card is passing all stress tests, do the same oc as new performs the same but it crashes on gaming. No idea. Those cards are so freaking weird not gonna bother try anything more. Switched and everything work perfectly. 2080tis work cooler clock higher by default no overvoltage no oc. 2010mhz in gaming max 45c and under 39c 2025. Stock!

the only thing I can think of offhand about why the HSM fails more often is because it sees much higher voltage than the LSM. Mosfets can be more easily damaged by voltage and eos than other devices (that's why the 12V eos to the core degrades it so fast). But it's still odd because it's rated for all the voltage it would see in use. Perhaps if there's a voltage transient on the high side gate drive it can blow the gate and short the HSM?
Also, when I was trying to research that mosfets this thing has, I found a video from you praising the VRM! You said they are "fairchild 6283a doctor mos" and I was looking at the 6281 datasheet for clues about the abs max ratings of the hsm they use in the drmos package, but didn't see anything particulary notable (only ratings for the package as a whole).
ruclips.net/video/lKnETa9DMbA/видео.html "I can't rip on nvidia about low quality VRMs. This isn't low quality" (in the 780ti/980ti/titan-x). Good to see how far you've come since 2016!

I have a 980Ti Strix that maxes at 1445MHz 1.23V. it's also very temperature sensitive. As far as i know it is normal for GM200 cards to max at that range. I got told by someone with much more experience than me that such a clock is actually very good for a big Maxwell core. Smaller cores like 980s/970s/960s behave different. They scale better with voltage and clock higher. If you want to take the titan sub ambient it should perform much better

Could the high side mosfets blow up more often because they cannot handle current spikes coming back from the inductors as a result of sporadic core load?

On my older GTX 970, when I bought it I could bench at 1480MHz, then more than 5 years after, it could bench up to 1430MHz, same voltage, no failure, it was a Zotac Amp! so a pretty good pcb, I believe some Kepler/Maxwell core are degrading with time but not all, I have GTX 970/980/980Ti that could oc to 1600/1580/1560MHz on stock voltage and I don't think they degrade over time or these cards would have been golden at launch..

When has it been anywhere near quite warm in the UK in the last few days, or did you accidentally put the central heating on? lol. Especially if you still live in Scotland, I'm in Glasgow and it's been nothing but fucking freezing here, well 15-16C hardly warm. In fact if you are anywhere near Glasgow do you fancy popping in and having a look at my GTX295, the green LED comes on, which is supposed to mean all is OK, and the PC will POST with the GPU installed but I am getting nowt on the screen, there's a Tunnocks caramel wafer in it for you 🥖
