    Listened again today and after knowing and loving this for 40 years for the first time it occured to me that the subject of this song (a woman declaring her independence) is basically the same as in "Don't You Want Me". Maybe my English was too bad back in the day to notice.

    Amazing track with an incredible bass. Seems marsh and ware had the funky side that later re-emerge with penthouse and pavement.

    Brilliant and very funky. This song could have been released or produced by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic. Also the keyboards are extraordinary, dreamy and VERY cool. The drums are also in the same minimalist style as Chic. Total focus on the basics: just laying down the solid groove and that's fine.

    Some prototypical sounds for "Don't You Want Me" in the beginning, and then some "Being Boiled" stabs towards the end!

    This is as close as The Human League ever got to Duran Duran - RIP Colin Thurston. Colin loved that rich mid sound that was ever present in his work.

      You got it backwards. Duran Duran would have been influenced by this song and the original rendition of The Human League. This tune is 1979/80. Duran Duran's first album was 1981.

    this song was covered by the British dance troupe Hot Gossip on their 1981 album "Geisha Boys and Temple Girls" produced by Martyn Ware, which the album was a commercial failure and winded up to be the last Dindisc release.

      wrong. name of the album is "Penthouse & Pavement". and it was NOT a "failure". maybe not a huge success like "Dare" of the The Human League, without them. But that album sold !!! "geisha boy and temple girl" is one of the tracks on the album.

    • @gilles.leguen

      @@omcf I know. Of course !!! Heaven 17 is half of The Human League. break up. Ware & Marsh goes on to form Heaven 17 aka BEF, while Human League goes gold with the album "Dare" and the huge hit "don't you want me".

    A brilliant recording. But there is quite a bit of distortion in the vocals. This is most prominent in the S sounds. You hear this in many recordings of that era. How and when was this introduced? In the mastering stage perhaps?

      I’ve found two sources on the web saying that it’s Mo Foster. Because it’s a fretless bass, and such a sinuous and slinky line, for years I thought it may have been Pino Palladino. Also, according to Simon Best, who used to be an executive with Fast Records, Simon Phillips is playing drums.

    • @jsnowdendavies
      @jsnowdendavies Год назад +3

      @@jzbass72 Simon Phillips and Mo Foster used to work together - they did the first Michael Schenker Group record and worked with Jeff Beck too. So perhaps one got booked and suggested the other? Either way, it's a fantastic bassline!
