Clarification: While measles is the poster child for lifelong immunity, folks born between 1957 and 1989 are likely to have only received one dose of the vaccine. And that's less effective than the two-dose protocol we've used since 1989, so it can be good for those people to check with a doctor that they really did develop immunity.

@@misanthropiclusion Once a kid turns 18, parental consent is no longer required. They can just go to any local health clinic or their regular doctor (if they have one). Heck, pharmacies like Walgreens & Walmart offer vaccines, too, either free or low cost.

@@yanuehara8017 you're overstating the case. Yes, vaccines are important, but most anti-vax kids do grow up without any problems. After all, Humanity as a species survived long enough to develop this technology. Plus you need to be exposed to the virus in order to get sick. Herd Immunity largely prevents that, so in a way, those kids are protected by vaccines despite their parents.💉

Do you know what's sad? A six year old girl here in Houston just died of the flu last week, so that joke was kinda true for her. Ditto for the little ones that died of measles. (not that the joke wasn't funny; nurses have a morbid sense of humor).

Actually in contrast to the usual vaccinations (which is highly advisable) flu vaccination is not. It starts with that fact that a flu vaccination won't protect you from a flu infection, but just against a single strain, of which there are a large number. The other thing is that flu (unlike childrens diseases against you should vaccinate) does on average not have any serious impacts (except that you feel really really bad) if your immune system is intact, meaning that a flu shot is primarily advisable for people with a weakened immune system, like very young or very old people or people with an impaired immune system. For an average healthy adult flu shots aren't reasonable, as along as not a highly problematic strain arises (eg H1N1), which would of course be a completely different situation. Taking your annual a shot will of course not do anything bad to you, but it will very likely also not do much good.

Could be worse, my dad thinks the COVID vaccine was invented by Microsoft so they could microchip people and track them as well as earn money off the chips as part of some vague conspiracy to earn bitcoins off bio data. he thinks people should be taking the Chloroquine instead. He still got the vaccine but he still spouts the really bizarre conspiracy theory. He claims he got the vaccine because corrupt doctors wouldnt give him the chloroquine.
My kid was vaccinated at the beginning of this past fall against the flu. He still got it 5 months later but it was super mild. In the next room was a 15yo who has skipped out on some years of flu vaccines. Well, he had a 105. fever. The flu vaccine isn't a guarantee BUT it'll be much milder.
A vaccine will not make you immune to a disease. It will help you fight diseases better.
Nah, my sister and Mom always got theirs while I never got one and they'd still get sick yearly while I'd stay healthy sharing the same areas. It depends on each person individual immune system and their specific responses to the vaccine. It isn't just a helper for everyone.

Flu strains seem to change so fast, vaccines are ineffective by the time the vaccines are ready for flu season. This also happens because vaccine producers have to start production on the vaccines a year in advance so they're using educated guess and modeling to guess the strain they'll need to vaccinate against. Also, sometimes the the markers change during production and it isn't caught. This happened last year or the year before. Vaccines are grown in chicken eggs, and the strain they were growing mutated and the marker changed during production, rendering the vaccine less effective.
They also vaccinate for two strains (a and b strains) as the there are early and late season flu strains.
Flu strains and vaccinations are very interesting, def worth reading about.
At least I know I can take antivirals because I know the vaccine is a waste of time and getting the vaccine didn't stop me from taking medication for several weeks and being sick as a dog.
May I request a video on group immunity please. I feel it import that every understands that if they don't vaccinate they may be fine but if lots do the same. Well you get the idea.
Maybe, but that's not foolproof, and if some people think they'll be safe, there's a chance that enough people will stop being immune that an outbreak can occur among that population. The main danger of not using vaccines is that if you get it, people who can't take the vaccine (people who are immunocompromised) are put in a lot of danger.
@@woodypigeon unless you can't get a vaccine for some reason you need to get one so you'll count among those numbers that act as an immune buffer for those who can't take them. Opting out of a vaccination is as much a disservice to your community as refusing to vote or work. Worse actually seeing as not getting vaccinated can end up killing you or others.

Yeah, I think it might have been a minor script error. I do however think most people got the real point though.
In germany they offer now free flu shots for all family members at the pediatricians office. When our daughter got her vaccines last fall they offered to give me and my husband flu shots as well, then and there. They said the government wants it to be as easy and available as possible for parents to get their shots, too! A few years ago it did cost around 50$ each, now its free. Really greatful for that service!!

any idea why people dont get flu shots? I know some areas are less susceptible due to less travel, immigration, lower population density, better healthcare, etc. but it seems like Denmark would be susceptible to the flu thanks to a high urbanization rate.

My mom said I needed a flu shot because there was like an epidemic thing. 2 days later I got the flu and was so weak I couldn’t pick up a cup.
I have had red measles five times and German measles four time. I have been full vaccinated since toddlerhood. Mumps I have had twice as well. I have also been vaccinated twice as I would not have been allowed into Canada.

Before having seen the video, my guess would be that influenza viruses have a shorter lifespan than measle viruses. They therefore evolve much faster, so you're basically vaccinating against a completely new flu virus every single year.
I hope that like me, everyone who played Plague Inc. looked at the title and immediately thought of three words:

Because honestly, I'd rather be sick for 3-4 days every 3-4 years rather than getting a flu shot every year.

The flu can still kill a healthy person. It could kill anyone. Healthy people are more likely to survive though. Still, just take your shots. It isn't all that bad when you're redirecting your attention elsewhere.. for about 2-3 seconds.

A 1/100.000 that get the Flu get killed by it is generous and probably even lower.
It kills those that are weakened. Either malnurished, HIV, other diseases, age related. But it doesn't kill you if you have a healthy immunesystem.
And EVEN THEN if you react early enough you can get to the hospital and survive.
Also it doesn't prevent the flu (like other vaccines), as there are way too many fluversions out there. It is based on a prediction of which ones are the most likely. Good prevention, but not nearly as effective as other vaccines.
As I said, if I'm missing something (or even are misinformed) please link me to studies or general conclusions.
Because I am a vivid defender of vaccines... just not for flu shots for otherwise healthy people.
The flu doesn't make you sick for a couple days. That's a cold. My niece hates getting shots too but man up! Literally 2 seconds and it's over... and it could save your life. Ironically my niece has several piercings and is more scared of getting a shot.

Don't remember when was the last time I got a flu shot. Probably when I was still a wee little lad. I still get the flu once, maybe twice sometimes every year but never needed any shots. Just extra rest for a week and it's gone.

The Flu shot is a waste of time because Flu strains change too quickly. I'm 46 and don't recall ever having the flu, and the same goes for the rest of my family. I never had a Flu shot.

The Anti-Anti-Vax crowd makes it sound like Measles is an assured death sentence for a kid exposed which is also disinformation. It used to be considered a mild childhood disease that kills about 1 in 2000 "reported" cases. "reported" cases is usually smaller than the actual cases. Conjecture, It maybe that a mother having had measles make her own children more likely to be in the 99.9% that will effectively fight off the infection. A study also suggests that the more you are exposed to life, going outside and being in contact with forests, field, etc the stronger your immune system, if you live indoors without much exposure to life and sanitize everything, you might weaken your immune system. If humans use artificals means to act as a substitute for their immune system over time the immune system will suck to a point that is close to the end in War of the Worlds, making every vaccine essential to survive and a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I'll admit we don't do yearly shots here but do get vaccines. Bit odd I guess. Never knew you needed yearly flu shots.
I don´t know about the rest of the world, but in the Netherlands, only "risk groups" are vaccinated yearly (AFAIK), these include the elderly, the really young and the ill, plus people that are connected to the risk groups, like caregivers.
@@MrWheelman82 : Same in the US. You can actually get the shots in Wal-Mart during flu season, but it's not that common to do it.
Which, admittedly, will probably bit us at some point, since a lot of folks apparently haven't had any credible exposure to one of the flu branches (swine flu maybe?).
Regardless, the flu just isn't considered dangerous enough for most folks to bother with the vaccine.
Well the more people who get the shot the less likely anyone would get sick from it. Herd Immunity works be it measles or flu.

I havent had a flu shot since school, not against them, I fully believe in them, but just cant be bothered getting one

I never used to get flu shots until one year I got actual influenza. I was flat in bed for 10 days, occasionally crawling to the bathroom. I will NEVER go another year without getting the vaccine.

Unless you have weak immunity or health issues, you don't need a flu shot. If you are a healthy person then a common flu will go away within 2-3 days.

If I understand correctly, HIV has similar issues and makes it difficult treat - HIV mutates every host.
So I'm all for parents getting there kids vaccinated, but I haven't had a flu shot since before I can remember, so over 20 years (I'm 25) and I rarely get sick besides an occasional head cold. Honestly don't see the point of yearly flu shots. Commenting before watching.
A cold is nothing like the flu! I recently read a news report about a healthy guy in Alberta in similar circumstances to you. He was in a coma with the flu for about 20 days. Him and his friends are now committed to getting their shots every year. Just cuz you've never had a disease doesn't mean you shouldn't get vaccinated does it? I didn't get polio as a kid so does that mean I'm safe... no.

About 5 or 6 years ago the cdc admitted that that years flu shot was ineffective against that years virus but they still recommended people get the shot. I assume this is because developing a vaccine is expensive and if people didnt buy the vaccine that year the company that developed it could loose so much money that they would stop making flu vaccines all together.
Interesting, but seems a bit pointless conspiracy-wise. Market manipulating with medical misinformation seems a bit too against the idea of something like the CDC.

I never get a shot and I never get sick or the flu! Super human immune system!! I even almost cut off my pinky on a old rusty manwich can! Saw the bone and cartilage and nerves and tendons And my pinky healed back to my hand without going to the dr to get it stiched up! Like good old wolverine lol! Great video by the way!
Am I the only one kinda concerned that a vaccine that targets shorter segments of HA could cause some autoimmune/molecular mimicry issues? While I trust that the people making and studying this have considered the idea, I hope they're doing human trials on a larger variety of people with this in mind. Especially since trials get done on afab people less often and they're often at greater risk for autoimmune disease.
Again though, I've only got 2 years worth of college towards my hopeful future career in a field like this...

It's a bit annoying that I always get the flue a month or so before the vaccine is available (I live in a country with universal healthcare so it's free for all of us if go on and ask for it)
You very likely don't get "the flu" (influenza), but "a cold" (which are Rhinoviruses). Rhinoviruses are RNA viruses and thus mutate like hell, so there there will never be a vaccine. Actually there is also not a vaccine against "influenza" per se, but just against individual strains of which there are a lot. So you just get vaccinated against the "strain of the month" .. the currently most common one. So a flu shot is far from protecting you from the flu.

you make it sound like it's a yearly change event rather than the fact that there are several flu strains that go around at any given time and that the flu vaccines only target the top three or so. It's not that the mutation is occurring that fast it's a fact that you're letting other strains grow while eliminating the top. If anything there should be a study conducted if a less harmful version of a flu strain competes with more harmful versions.

Why does flu virus emerge in the winter times and not in the summer other than the proximity factor of human interaction? I.e. do they go into hibernation in the summer time?

Only person I know that's been sick twice this winter is my dad and my mom got sick once, both are only two people I know who got sick and both only people I know who got shots, it's literally the dumbest thing only bad stuff can happen to you from getting these shots theres no benefit just hope you dont get a bunk one

I get a fever, regardless of getting a shot or not (haven't even seen the face of a doctor in the last 3 years). Not really sure if it's flue or not. Never took a day off, never been stuck to the bed. I don't take any medication for fever or headache. They simply go away. Not really sure why. Guess I need to perform some proper experiment on my body. Let me know if you have any hypothesis.
Can easily be a minor bacteria infection.
We had the bad habit to put everything on the flu but there is a lot of stuff that can give flu like symptoms.

Here in canada doctors are starting to say you should skip a year between flu shots. Cause it was found out if you get flu shots yearly the previous years flu shot will weaken the effectiveness of next years shot and scientists have not figured out why yet.

In my Canada I've heard no such thing. It's like the autism antivax crap news that scared people away from vaccines. Just cuz you read a story doesn't mean its proven or will stand up to further scrutiny. In fact flu shots are now considered so important they're completely free in some provinces like Alberta. You shouldn't skip a year because of some fake news or internet rumor. Even responsible news organizations report obscure research sometimes but that doesn't mean it's wise to make healthcare decisions on one study.
I thought it was just mutation in general. Not just the shape... Learning every day.
