It starts with that fact that a flu vaccination won't protect you from a flu infection, but just against a single strain, of which there are a large number. The other thing is that flu (unlike childrens diseases against you should vaccinate) does on average not have any serious impacts (except that you feel really really bad) if your immune system is intact, meaning that a flu shot is primarily advisable for people with a weakened immune system, like very young or very old people or people with an impaired immune system. For an average healthy adult flu shots aren't reasonable, as along as not a highly problematic strain arises (eg H1N1), which would of course be a completely different situation. Taking your annual a shot will of course not do anything bad to you, but it will very likely also not do much good.

My kid was vaccinated at the beginning of this past fall against the flu. He still got it 5 months later but it was super mild. In the next room was a 15yo who has skipped out on some years of flu vaccines. Well, he had a 105. fever. The flu vaccine isn't a guarantee BUT it'll be much milder.
Nah, my sister and Mom always got theirs while I never got one and they'd still get sick yearly while I'd stay healthy sharing the same areas. It depends on each person individual immune system and their specific responses to the vaccine. It isn't just a helper for everyone.

Flu strains seem to change so fast, vaccines are ineffective by the time the vaccines are ready for flu season. This also happens because vaccine producers have to start production on the vaccines a year in advance so they're using educated guess and modeling to guess the strain they'll need to vaccinate against. Also, sometimes the the markers change during production and it isn't caught. This happened last year or the year before. Vaccines are grown in chicken eggs, and the strain they were growing mutated and the marker changed during production, rendering the vaccine less effective. They also vaccinate for two strains (a and b strains) as the there are early and late season flu strains. Flu strains and vaccinations are very interesting, def worth reading about.

Maybe, but that's not foolproof, and if some people think they'll be safe, there's a chance that enough people will stop being immune that an outbreak can occur among that population. The main danger of not using vaccines is that if you get it, people who can't take the vaccine (people who are immunocompromised) are put in a lot of danger.

In germany they offer now free flu shots for all family members at the pediatricians office. When our daughter got her vaccines last fall they offered to give me and my husband flu shots as well, then and there. They said the government wants it to be as easy and available as possible for parents to get their shots, too! A few years ago it did cost around 50$ each, now its free. Really greatful for that service!!

I have had red measles five times and German measles four time. I have been full vaccinated since toddlerhood. Mumps I have had twice as well. I have also been vaccinated twice as I would not have been allowed into Canada.
Before having seen the video, my guess would be that influenza viruses have a shorter lifespan than measle viruses. They therefore evolve much faster, so you're basically vaccinating against a completely new flu virus every single year.

Real question from a guy who dislikes shots... A LOT! Is there a benefit for getting the flu shot? I mean except reducing the probability of getting sick that year? Because honestly, I'd rather be sick for 3-4 days every 3-4 years rather than getting a flu shot every year. The flu can still kill a healthy person. It could kill anyone. Healthy people are more likely to survive though. Still, just take your shots. It isn't all that bad when you're redirecting your attention elsewhere.. for about 2-3 seconds.

Also it doesn't prevent the flu (like other vaccines), as there are way too many fluversions out there. It is based on a prediction of which ones are the most likely. Good prevention, but not nearly as effective as other vaccines. As I said, if I'm missing something (or even are misinformed) please link me to studies or general conclusions. Because I am a vivid defender of vaccines... just not for flu shots for otherwise healthy people.
The flu doesn't make you sick for a couple days. That's a cold. My niece hates getting shots too but man up! Literally 2 seconds and it's over... and it could save your life. Ironically my niece has several piercings and is more scared of getting a shot.

Am I the only one kinda concerned that a vaccine that targets shorter segments of HA could cause some autoimmune/molecular mimicry issues? While I trust that the people making and studying this have considered the idea, I hope they're doing human trials on a larger variety of people with this in mind. Especially since trials get done on afab people less often and they're often at greater risk for autoimmune disease. Again though, I've only got 2 years worth of college towards my hopeful future career in a field like this...
My mother have a autoimmune disease. This is a real pain... So many medicine to take... with so many bad effect... Don't remember when was the last time I got a flu shot. Probably when I was still a wee little lad. I still get the flu once, maybe twice sometimes every year but never needed any shots. Just extra rest for a week and it's gone.

I don´t know about the rest of the world, but in the Netherlands, only "risk groups" are vaccinated yearly (AFAIK), these include the elderly, the really young and the ill, plus people that are connected to the risk groups, like caregivers.

About 5 or 6 years ago the cdc admitted that that years flu shot was ineffective against that years virus but they still recommended people get the shot. Conjecture, It maybe that a mother having had measles make her own children more likely to be in the 99.9% that will effectively fight off the infection. A study also suggests that the more you are exposed to life, going outside and being in contact with forests, field, etc the stronger your immune system, if you live indoors without much exposure to life and sanitize everything, you might weaken your immune system. If humans use artificals means to act as a substitute for their immune system over time the immune system will suck to a point that is close to the end in War of the Worlds, making every vaccine essential to survive and a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Why does flu virus emerge in the winter times and not in the summer other than the proximity factor of human interaction? I.e. do they go into hibernation in the summer time?
you make it sound like it's a yearly change event rather than the fact that there are several flu strains that go around at any given time and that the flu vaccines only target the top three or so. It's not that the mutation is occurring that fast it's a fact that you're letting other strains grow while eliminating the top. If anything there should be a study conducted if a less harmful version of a flu strain competes with more harmful versions.

In germany they offer now free flu shots for all family members at the pediatricians office. When our daughter got her vaccines last fall they offered to give me and my husband flu shots as well, then and there. They said the government wants it to be as easy and available as possible for parents to get their shots, too! A few years ago it did cost around 50$ each, now its free. Really greatful for that service!!

The Flu shot is a waste of time because Flu strains change too quickly. I'm 46 and don't recall ever having the flu, and the same goes for the rest of my family. I never had a Flu shot.

I have had red measles five times and German measles four time. I have been full vaccinated since toddlerhood. Mumps I have had twice as well. I have also been vaccinated twice as I would not have been allowed into Canada.

Before having seen the video, my guess would be that influenza viruses have a shorter lifespan than measle viruses. They therefore evolve much faster, so you're basically vaccinating against a completely new flu virus every single year.

I never used to get flu shots until one year I got actual influenza. I was flat in bed for 10 days, occasionally crawling to the bathroom. I will NEVER go another year without getting the vaccine.

Unless you have weak immunity or health issues, you don't need a flu shot. If you are a healthy person then a common flu will go away within 2-3 days.

Because honestly, I'd rather be sick for 3-4 days every 3-4 years rather than getting a flu shot every year.

The flu can still kill a healthy person. It could kill anyone. Healthy people are more likely to survive though. Still, just take your shots. It isn't all that bad when you're redirecting your attention elsewhere.. for about 2-3 seconds.

A 1/100.000 that get the Flu get killed by it is generous and probably even lower.
It kills those that are weakened. Either malnurished, HIV, other diseases, age related. But it doesn't kill you if you have a healthy immunesystem.
And EVEN THEN if you react early enough you can get to the hospital and survive.
Also it doesn't prevent the flu (like other vaccines), as there are way too many fluversions out there. It is based on a prediction of which ones are the most likely. Good prevention, but not nearly as effective as other vaccines.
As I said, if I'm missing something (or even are misinformed) please link me to studies or general conclusions.
Because I am a vivid defender of vaccines... just not for flu shots for otherwise healthy people.
The flu doesn't make you sick for a couple days. That's a cold. My niece hates getting shots too but man up! Literally 2 seconds and it's over... and it could save your life. Ironically my niece has several piercings and is more scared of getting a shot.

Am I the only one kinda concerned that a vaccine that targets shorter segments of HA could cause some autoimmune/molecular mimicry issues? While I trust that the people making and studying this have considered the idea, I hope they're doing human trials on a larger variety of people with this in mind. Especially since trials get done on afab people less often and they're often at greater risk for autoimmune disease.
Again though, I've only got 2 years worth of college towards my hopeful future career in a field like this...

Don't remember when was the last time I got a flu shot. Probably when I was still a wee little lad. I still get the flu once, maybe twice sometimes every year but never needed any shots. Just extra rest for a week and it's gone.

I know what you're doing, and I agree whole-heartedly, but the only times in my entire 38 years of life that I've ever gotten the flu, were after flu shots...3 times... 20, 22, and 23. All 3 times I spent a week in bed in severe pain and fever...so...maybe I'm an outlier here, but, its been 15 years since I've had a flu. So....alright, now Ill watch the video.

I don´t know about the rest of the world, but in the Netherlands, only "risk groups" are vaccinated yearly (AFAIK), these include the elderly, the really young and the ill, plus people that are connected to the risk groups, like caregivers.

About 5 or 6 years ago the cdc admitted that that years flu shot was ineffective against that years virus but they still recommended people get the shot. I assume this is because developing a vaccine is expensive and if people didnt buy the vaccine that year the company that developed it could loose so much money that they would stop making flu vaccines all together.

The Anti-Anti-Vax crowd makes it sound like Measles is an assured death sentence for a kid exposed which is also disinformation. It used to be considered a mild childhood disease that kills about 1 in 2000 "reported" cases. "reported" cases is usually smaller than the actual cases. Conjecture, It maybe that a mother having had measles make her own children more likely to be in the 99.9% that will effectively fight off the infection. A study also suggests that the more you are exposed to life, going outside and being in contact with forests, field, etc the stronger your immune system, if you live indoors without much exposure to life and sanitize everything, you might weaken your immune system. If humans use artificals means to act as a substitute for their immune system over time the immune system will suck to a point that is close to the end in War of the Worlds, making every vaccine essential to survive and a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Why does flu virus emerge in the winter times and not in the summer other than the proximity factor of human interaction? I.e. do they go into hibernation in the summer time?

you make it sound like it's a yearly change event rather than the fact that there are several flu strains that go around at any given time and that the flu vaccines only target the top three or so. It's not that the mutation is occurring that fast it's a fact that you're letting other strains grow while eliminating the top. If anything there should be a study conducted if a less harmful version of a flu strain competes with more harmful versions.
