Sometimes these short journeys can be used to refresh a drivers knowledge of a section of line so they can still sign for it. I'm sure there was an early train from Piccadilly to Huddersfield that first went to Salford Crescent and reversed, instead of using the Ordsall Chord so the drivers knowledge could be maintained.
Most do just reverse at the old box site. As below it helps to keep route knowledge up to date. There's some that reverse at Stalybridge or there was before going back to Manchester via Guide Bridge
All the way from Phillips Park almost to Hyde Junction to reverse: maybe they should rebuild the L.N.W.R. viaduct at Ardwick to facilitate such movements.
I envy you and my wish is to travel this route and others in the USA. I love the emotion and passion in your words. Great stuff! ❤
A nice smooth quiet journey. Cheers.
That's a long way out to go and change ends.
In BR days units used to change ends on the main line near Ashburys 'box.

Trees 🌲 need cutting back at Philips Park west Jn.
That's taken nearly 40 minutes to travel a distance of around 3 miles as the crow flies :-)
