      This was literally what I said to Bill Clinton when I was his secretary in the McGovern campaign of 1972 in Dallas, Texas. Unite us. Unite the states! I'd added. It was why Clinton spent so much time in Wyoming and sadly cost the lives of some US Secret Service agents who died protecting the president's belongings in an aircraft crash. It wasn't Scottish nobles, but Robert Reich, Strobe Talbot, David Kendall, Ann Richards, Marybeth Rogers, Ron Kirk, Hillary Clinton, Stephen Spielberg, and me. So you can ask any of them whether they'd had a sense of deja vu watching the film twenty years after hearing the original words themselves.

    • @2hot2handle65
      @2hot2handle65 2 года назад +11

      It is terrible advice. Case in point, if you could use one sentence to describe how the Middle Ages worked, it would be "Men following titles."
      This movie is about as historically accurate as the Lord of the Rings. And that's not an exaggeration.

    • @pharaohsmagician8329
      @pharaohsmagician8329 2 года назад +3

      @@2hot2handle65 exactly. Plenty of terrible battles and nations have been destroyed because men with titles ordered it. But it also is very good and true advice because the next king, who wants to overthrow the current king, usually recruits passionate soldiers and officials because he showed courage and bravery and determination to his cause. That courageous man will turn into the blood thirsty tyrant in old age yes but that's another lesson. Courage and respect is what men follow. Titles and armies is what keeps them following.
      Men follow Power. The greatest threat is what they will submit too, unless they are confident they can beat it. Saying they follow courage is using the wrong word. They follow who they have to follow if they can't fight back and there's a sword to their throat

I think he was the true hero in the story because he risked it all and gave up everything to achieve redemption. Bruces eyes when Wallace told him hed follow him. Tells you a lot, Wallace gave him something right then I don't think he had ever had. Self worth, and the beginning of confidence. Such an amazing movie. Mel doesn't get the credit he deserves for all the masterpieces he has put out over the years. This and The Patriot being two movies I watched with my older brother growing up, when I was probably too young but he would let me watch when mom and dad were out on date night or whatever, one of the only bonding times we had being 5 years apart. I loved my older brother so much back then and just wanted to be like him and his attention now and then. I never really got it except those very rare nights of movies and video games and pizza. Now 15 plus years later we have blood but aren't brothers. Breaks my heart.

    I know people deride and discredit this movie for being overly romanticized and kind of inaccurate in some parts, but I love the little references made to the actual history. The conversation taking place in the video almost certainly has to be a clever nod to the famous quote by James Douglas that he says after hurling the Bruce's entombed heart into battle before rushing in after it. "Lead on Brave Heart and I shall follow thee." The last scene before the end credits could also be another reference to the same quote. Hamish hurls Wallace's sword into the open battle field and then the Scots led by Bruce charge in after it.

    Something always bothered me about "Robert the Bruce"; he's too fancy and he's got a greasy smile that says, "Show your back to me and I'll stick it in."

    In truth Wallace was a supporter of John Balliol and not Robert de Brus' claim. When Balliol was taken to London by Edward, he continued the fight in his name and took up Guardianship to keep the seat warm.

      Every fool who thinks that ideology is the way to determine leadership, is just another one of those squabbling nobles demanding that the other accept their documented claims.
      No ideology is going to save government from being corrupted by its own power.
      Learn to encourage and work with the people who want to build and guard the peace and prosperity of your community over and above their acquisition of personal power, wealth and position.
      THOSE are the people we follow. Not a bunch of blow-hards screaming ideological platitudes at their enemies.
