So actually according to ?uestlove in his Red Bull interview, the “Lauryn track” was NOT “Feel Like Makin’ Love”, it was a completely different set of MULTIPLE beats that could’ve been a track with Lauryn but they never decided on which track (meaning Jay Dee beat) was gonna be used. And Lauryn never committed her vocals to tape that we know of. So in a last stitch effort they decided to cover “Feel Like Makin’ Love” , which is why Jay Dee isn’t credited, because it replaced the Lauryn track. It wasn’t actually the track she was supposed to be on. ruclips.net/video/yCxVzCe2N1Y/видео.html he starts talking about it at 42:38.
The timeline of events and who did what when definitely gets murky. I’m pulling my info from Dan Charnas’ research and interviews from his excellent book “Dilla Time”, but as we’ve seen with the Soulquarians before, there are multiple conflicting stories about what happened. In this case, regardless of what specifically happened, it’s a shame that we never got a Dill/D’Angelo/Lauryn track, and especially that Dilla didn’t get credit for (at minimum) his influence on this album. To represent both sides of the story for the record, I’ll pin this comment. Thanks for the link and citation!
@@diggingthegreats absolutely agreed, love your videos, thank you so much for shedding light on these amazing stories and music that is overlooked so often 🙌🏼
Bro, these videos never disappoint with the information that construct most of my favorites from this time, as for the mashup…🔥. It’s nice to see Alien Family getting some love and it was the very first beat that I ever heard after actually discovering J Dilla. It’s been love ever since. It was at a pivotal moment for me and it literally changed my life. He was already gone 🕊️and I remember the tears that fell when I found out. I just wanted to pay my respects. I always felt J Dilla presence in Voodoo and when I looked on the back of the CD cover for him, I was disappointed. But yo, you brought what I already felt was real out in the open. Thank you for what you do. You the GOAT!! 🐐
Really appreciate how much you discuss D'Angelo. It's criminal how underrated he is in today's landscape, but I'm sure when he returns it'll be to his rightful place on the Soul throne.
I don't think so, Black Messiah didn't make much of a splash in the mainstream, even though it was one of, if not the best albums of that whole decade imo. But that's cool, D'Angelo isn't really chasing fame at this point of his life, he seems to be purposely avoiding it actually. He just puts out a classic album every decade, to bless us with some good soul music.
@@LookingForAName... “Black Messiah” didn’t make much of a splash?! Huh????? In February 2016, Black Messiah won a Grammy Award in the category of Grammy Award for Best R&B Album at the 58th Grammy Awards. 🙄 Put more respect on D’s name yo… every time that cat drops something he wins big… #Casual

I bought the book “Dilla Time” because of your recommendation in a previous video and DEVOURED it. I learned, I laughed, I cried… it was an amazing book. Gonna be gifting it to multiple friends!
Bro I'm SOOOO GLAD that your channel popped up in my suggestions. I was always considered the source of most things "Dilla" in my circle, but you took me to school! I now recommend your channel now for further insight when asked about Dilla's story. Keep up the amazing work, bro.
THANK YOU MAN. Jesus Christmas. I'm in the middle of Dilla Time now. I bought two copies. One to abuse, mark and highlight in and the other for my book shelve. Keep em coming man. I gotta share this link. Salute.
I had wanted to read dilla time it was on my wishlist but due to these videos I actually purchased it and am 7 chapters or so deep. Thank you very much for motivating me to do something I needed for my music. ❤
Bro. I just recently found your channel and have to say that your content quality is off the charts. I had my 16 year old daughter, who loves Voodoo but doesn’t have the ties to it like I do because I was 20-21 and heartbroken when this album dropped (voodoo was the soundtrack to the breakup but one mo gin was the my script if I was ever to see her again [I haven’t lol]) and she sat through the soulquarians video and the chicken grease video, and the D Angelo Voodoo documentary. These music history lessons are incredible! I love the lessons, the playing, the mixes, and most importantly, the dancing. I am on the edge of my seat waiting for the next installment. I have a suggestion. Can you cover Madlib and all of his aliases? All of him as jazz musicians and as Quasimodo. There has to be a ton of content surrounding him. Oh, did I mention that I absolutely love the dancing in these videos?? Also, she said that you have an amazing beard.
Avengers of Neo Soul looool couldn’t have said it better. Just came across your channel and have binge watched several of your videos already like the lectures I wish I could stay awake in during college . Such great quality and love how much homage you’re giving to these legends!

One of the great things about this channel, aside from learning a ton of new stuff about music that I love, is imagining what other topics you can draw inspiration from to make more videos. I'd love a deeper dive into Voodoo, especially the instrumental alchemy between Questlove, Charlie Hunter, and Roy Hargrove on "Spanish Joint". The acoustic demo for that song is on RUclips as well and it's amazing!
I would like to see you do a video on The Neptunes! Your research is incredible and I appreciate the time and effort you put in the music and it’s history💜
OK my dude, I see you and I subbed! I see that you are heavily into the same artists that I love, and you tell the stories behind the art that is just as interesting. Dope track by the way!
This channel is gold and this is one of the few decisions the youtube algorithm did well :) Will you break down MF DOOM & Madlib in the future? Would love to see that. Greetings from Berlin, Germany
I would really love to hear your take on the Neo-soul supergroup that didnt happen… and boy for the album to drop 17 years after the fact: Jon B’s “Jack Herrera”. The history behind it is crazy!
Another great video man, please keep it up. I'd be lying though if I said I didn't hear Snakes the second you started that remix. Second you hit the drums I heard "Sometimes I feel alienated because I'm not up in the stadium playing or on the radio saying"
I was walking around NY, on the periphery of the business, during that time. I had always heard that the label was struggling with Voodoo before it dropped because "it was too dark" and it was being delayed as they tried to find a single. I heard there was a song they were trying to do with Lauryn, but Rohan killed it. I never said this before because it always felt like unfair gossip. To this day, idk what is true and what is not...but so much time has passed for this little bit of gossip to matter. So, I'm just letting it fly here.
So who are the artists now that are continuing to make neo soul music that you can recommend. Watching ur videos has made me fall in love again w/ all the music the soulquarians made. Commons like water for chocolate is in my top 10 all time fav albums btw.
Interesting to note, in the original post on OKayplayer, Quest says: "jaydee did the lauryn track. and it has an al green feel to it mixed with a little ''got til it's gone'' (jaydee did that too...)." And now we know definitively (from Charnas's research) that Dilla didn't do *that* either...
Wow! I was surprised that Dilla did not have any credits on Voodoo especially since Questlove was talking about altering his drum feel based on Dilla's unquantized time and D'Angelo's guidance in the Red Bull Music Academy interview
I guess he didn’t get credit because it was more of an influence than direct production. At most he could have gotten a “thank you for the inspiration” credit. Just like Marvin Gaye and Prince could have gotten an influence credit also. 🙂
Questlove actually "got D'Angelo's attention" by playing the intro to "Four" by Madhouse (Prince's side project) at a Roots concert. Video: ruclips.net/video/8tp5BHK8m5w/видео.html
Right! Quest has told the story multiple ways, with either Four or a Dilla style beat being the thing that he played to get D’Angelo’s attention. In my Soulquarians video I mention both, Regardless, Dilla played a crucial role in the formation. Here’s the interview where he mentions the Dilla groove: (story around 52:00) ruclips.net/video/r_nmfs-TgGQ/видео.html

I saw a Russel Elevado quote (the legendary engineer behind a lot of the Soulquarian artists stuff) saying several of the songs were live instrument replications of Dilla beats. I can definitely hear the Dilla thing for the song chicken grease. Those block guitar chords and the timing sounds just like him. Like they were replicating the choppy sound of someone triggering guitar samples.
