Brisk running burns more calories than cycling, but running causes more bodily stress and damage especially to knees. I've always cycled but I also competitively ran in an athletics club, but eventually one of my knees suffered. So it's just cycling now and it burns _sufficient_ calories for me. I really enjoyed this cycling-running comparison, thanks Manon! 😊

  • @chris2ao

I was in the Army for 12 years and have over that time run hundreds of miles and yeah I burned a lot of calories and stayed in shape. I also got a bunch of back, knee, and ankle injuries that I still have to deal with 8 years after I separated from the military. Even in my best shape I was running a 7 minute mile and even at a slower pace the longest I've ever run was 10 miles which was about an hour and a half. I can cycle for 3+ hours and its very low impact. I can burn way more calories because I can exercise for longer. Based on the data presented here and my subjective experience, mile for mile and time for time you will burn more calories running. Thats not the whole picture though since most people can ride longer than they can run so cycling for me burns more calories.

Pacing is key! When I’m just training, I’ll run up to 30km, in somewhere between 2hr 30 to 3 hrs depending on elevation gain (around 8:45-9:30 min/mile). I’ll run on trails for at least 2/3 of that (all of it, if I could!). I’m 44 and the only problems I get from my running are the similar to those I get from cycling - muscle strains (being old is rubbish). I used to run shorter distances all the time and absolutely hammer it, but now I only do that on a tempo run or a hill sprint session. It’s pretty sustainable physically if you do that! I was really bad at running and not getting injured until I was given some proper advice, and it’s made running much more fun than it used to be. I also managed the Bath Half in under 1hr 35mins last year training like this.
Incidentally, I also love cycling, have always cycled and still do, and it is also amazingly good fun!

    • @chris2ao
      @chris2ao 3 года назад +7

@@alexjohnstonjohnston5374 That is awesome and is a reflection of your peak physical conditioning. However, I don't think it changes my point that in order to sustain 2 to 3hrs of running you must be pretty much a world class athlete. I understand that my opinion is subjective, but it does come from someone who has run hundreds of miles and I will tell you that my longest run was at 10 miles which was a little over an hour and a half and I felt like every joint and muscle in my body was going to tear apart. This was when I was 23 and to your point maybe I could have used some proper advice to not get injured or to train better. In basic training in the Army and being 18 years old it took 2 months to get my 2 mile time under 16 minutes and the longest we ran was about 6 miles which was well under an hour of running and pushed me to my physical max.
Juxtapose that with cycling, I started road cycling for the first time in my life at the end of January. I was overweight and had done no physical exertion at all for the 10 months prior to that. Due to covid and working remote I barely left the house. In one month, I went from riding 8 miles to 50 miles and spending 3+ hours in the saddle and burning 2700+ calories which is data collected in Strava which is incredible.
Also while I understand you haven’t had many running related injuries I believe that is the exception and not normal. I think it’s a universally accepted truth that running is a high impact exercise particularly on the joints. That doesn’t mean people shouldn’t run or that it isn’t a great exercise but to my original point I think that it’s possible to burn my calories cycling primarily because you don’t need to be in peak physical condition with years of training to ride a bicycle for hours but you do to run for hours.
If you can't tell by now, I'm also really biased lol. It's not so much that I love cycling, its the I really hate running. In my life, it never got easier, I never got a runners high, I was constantly plagued with injuries and it just wasn't fun for me. I still have friends who love running and I just don't get it.

At the end of the day, the calories burned really depends on the intensity when doing the exercise. If you upped the intensity for cycling, i am sure you can burn more calories then running, vice versa.

To an extent. Max power output running will beat max power output cycling though.
And max power output on a hand bike will be lower than either. However intensely you go at it, if you are using bigger muscles and exerting more force over more distance, you will burn more calories.

hmmmm. interesting but... if you run for 3-4 hours, you will burn more calories (following the video "protocol"). if you want to compare apple and oranges, of course it will work. in that case, you can find people who can't run or pedal for 30 mins so, they can spend 2500 calories from sitting on the sofa with a playstation. but that takes something like 24 hours. my point is: that would be out of the context too.

The body adapts over time to the activities you perform. People who are good at running are good at it because they’re body has adapted to that activity over repetition same with a person who cycles. The difference is only what you prefer. While I’m only a beginner cyclist, I can comfortably ride around 16-17 miles 5 days per week. I also spent 13 years in the US Military and being assigned to an Infantry Regiment for 4 years we ran an average of 18 miles per week . In fact the US Army standard was 4 miles in 36 minutes at a 9 minute mile pace, however that may be different now. Whilst I can still run, I prefer to ride because I get to see more and go further for the same amount of effort.

I’d really like to know “Dr. Ollie’s” take on this. There is a mountain of research on this topic. It’s also highly dependent on pace, weight and efficiency of the athlete, age and what we are looking to measure: calories per unit time, total calories achievable. E.g., I can cycle for 5-8 hours. I can’t run at the same level of perceived effort for 15 minutes. A fun show but short on science.

I really don't care which sport burns more, I just love pedalling. Plus cycling is far more "body-friendly" than running and this is not just from my own experience. Cycling, I've never had any injury caused by overtraining, working too much, just the usual fatigue and muscle damage which can be "cured" by resting or doing recovery rides. Running in the past, I've run into back problems and left calf pain which forced me to stop running for days or even weeks.

I found that to get the same aerobic effect from cycling, I need to double the time and a little more than quadruple the distance. For me running 4 miles in 30 minutes is about equivalent to biking 18 miles in 60 minutes. No hills. The ratio hasn't changed much over the years. When I was younger it was more like 4.5 miles running in 30 minutes and 20 miles biking in 60 minutes.

    • @yellowcakepie1
      @yellowcakepie1 3 года назад +8

I've been commuting in a very hilly area for several years on a bike. The hills are definitely easier to run and sprint up. Biking up the hill requires a sprint to build up momentum then grinding out the rest of the climb on a low gear which is much more exhausting than running up the same incline. You're moving 20-30 extra pounds up the same incline than running because you need to move your bike up the hill as well. There's no free lunch in physics.
Going downhill however, cycling is much more efficient for obvious reasons ;)

It estimated calories burned and when I jogged, the calories dropped even though I was going faster. It makes sense when you think about you switching from walking to running at some speed. You naturally sense that running is lower effort from there on up. It opened my eyes to Speed Walkers being just as much athletes as anybody. It still looks kind of silly though.

I run a fair bit, ultra distance off road when I can. My experience is that cycling burns more “fat” calories as I’m in HR Zones 2-3 most of the time, very rarely in zone 5 on a bike. Running though sees me in Zones 4-5 most of the time so not as many “fat” calories burned. That’s why like to do both, best of both worlds. As for which burns most... for me both burn a similar amount it’s just where they are burned from that differs.

Yes both sports do have their own injuries knee problems, back pain and joints issues. But the best thing is get out there and enjoy the freedom that both sports have to offer run or ride at a comfortable pace for yourself. I'm battling with an injury since 3 months back currently. Train rowing and kept following my training plan that consisted of nothing but rowing+strength training despite feeling the injury coming on( rib fracture). A more diverse training plan might have prevented that kind of injury. So for example do a couple of cycling sessions each week rather than row. Less repeated same kind of strain on the body.
Started cycling after the injury and going forward once I'm healed I will split my training into 60/40 rowing/cycling. Sure I will not be as strong a rower doing that but who cares really? I mean for anyone who isn't competing at a world class level what does it matter if your performance in one single sport isn't the best it could be?

I've been a runner for the last ten years or so, and I absolutely love it. However, I'm getting a bit older now and after finishing a marathon a couple years back, I found myself fighting some persistent leg issues which I can't seem to get past anymore. So, I'm just starting to pick up cycling a bit. I found the bit about how easy it is to grab a bike and go out for an hour or two vs doing the same while running to be completely accurate. It took me a ton of training before I could consistently run for an hour or two. I'm fairly out of shape now (I'm only good for maybe a half hour to forty five minutes run at most these days). However after just a couple of practice rides, I went out for an hour forty last weekend. I was amazed that I could do that. Based on my experience, I thought it would take months of training before I could do that. Granted, in that time I only went like 21 miles, which I'm sure is slow as molasses compared to most cyclists, but I was pretty happy! Came back and found that even after a long ride like that , it didn't aggravate my high hamstring problems like running even a couple miles tends to do! So, I'm hoping to do a lot more cycling going forward. Thanks for this video!

Calories = Duration (H:M:S) * 1440 * METS score for the speed and physical activity * 3.5 * body mass in Kg / 200. The METS score for cycling at 14 mph is 10 and is defined as, "Racing or leisure, fast, vigorous effort". The equivalent METS score for running is at 6 mph.

@Jarred Daw there is but for cycling it is usually much longer. Hence more time to burn calories. Also running is usually more stressing than cycling. You are putting in so much effort in a short time your body doesn't have time to start burning fats. It just burns glucose already in the muscles. If you want to lose weight better start with low intensity training like walking or cycling. You will be able to keep going longer and your body will start burning fat. Once you have lost weight you can step it up and improve your fitness.

The Strava numbers are nowhere near as exact for running as for biking, even on a treadmill, for us amateurs. A serious athlete will however perform regular fitness diagnostics, at which the energy consumption is measured by more accurate means, usually a combination of oxygen consumption and blood gases. This information allows you to compute energy consumption fairly well, knowing heart rate and measured output/pace.

Average runner does about 3mi each run (3‐4) and runs 3x a week for about 10.5mi a week.
Average walker (walking/hiking for fitness) does about 5mi a day 5x a week for a total of about 25-30mi a week.
Average walkers burn more calories than average runners despite the fact that runners burn more per mile
Average cyclist do 40-50mi a week. Most people don't bike unless they are pretty dedicated to it as a means of either transport or fitness or both
Walkers typically win this game. They walk more than we run or bike as an average. If all you care about is staying healthy for life, take an evening walk. I bike because I love it

Nice job ladies!! I'm older and a cyclist.....believe it's lower impact and easier on the joints for us older folks but really respect those out that are pounding the pavement!!

Well running generally you burn more but barely anyone can run an hour or more consistently without getting injured. Also the stronger you get as a cyclist the more work/energy you use over an hour. So it's quite relative. If you compare an elite runner and elite cyclist training over a week I reckon you'd see the cyclist burning more calories overall (also cyclists likely train twice as long as runners per week). I generally burn close to 1k calories doing an hour of sweet spot so but an average 13k (1hr) run for me is also around that. But couldn't do 13k runs back to back to back.

My comment is this the runner was running more naturally, that is the Arm movements were as if on the road as well as the Legs and small muscles balancing to stay vertical. the cyclist was only using Mostly Quads and calf’s. But when racing on the road a cyclist uses a lot of Core to get us and spring and use upper body to gain more speed for Sprints out of turns and up hills. Just my thoughts, Great show as always.

Good to see the slo-mo of the foot strike. The good thing about both sports is that going hard is different for everyone, but hard is still hard.

Depends which one you're better at. As a runner of 10 years but only a cyclist of a few months, I am able to try harder running than cycling, as I my cycling fitness is very low. I'm able to maintain a heart rate of 170+ bpm running at max effort for an hour, but can only maintain about 150 bpm cycling at max effort for an hour. On the other had, 150 bpm while running feels easy. I think it's because cycling is more demanding on the muscles, so my muscular endurance rather than aerobic fitness is the limiting factor.

The GCN - GTN collabs are the best!

Where I live, you can't run outdoors in the Winter snow and ice.
But I can easily ride my racing bike indoors on a magnetic resistance trainer.
I burn 200 calories in 20 minutes with an average heart rate of only 100 bpm.
That's merely spinning low rpm in mid-range gears.

usually if i go running, it's somewhere between a half and one hour and if i bike, it's multiple hours unless i'm stuck indoors on the trainer and then it's back well under an hour. i think i get close to the same intensity for either, but total calories on the bike are way more because i can go for much longer.

I'm still waiting for y'all to produce more content for those of us who are not racers. For those of us who use our bikes for transportation, for carrying cargo, for utility, for recreation, for therapeutic purposes, like you said you were going to do.
Please don't get wrong for the most part I do enjoy your videos und I understand that the improvements that you discuss with regards to racing do eventually trickle down to us everyday cyclists. But there are things that we "everyday" cyclists need/use on a daily basis that racers would never consider putting on their racing bikes.
Such as pannier racks, pannier bags, handlebar bags, light sets, bells/horns, trailers, locks.

Finally, the ladies had a go at a proper challenge. I loved it. The result is not that important as I watch both GCN and GTN :) Well done both of you.

I absolutely hate running, you put so much effort in it and I feel like I'm always in the same place, whereas with cycling I feel like I'm going on a journey, I can stop somewhere lovely for a coffee etc. For instance today I did a short bike ride 1h30 but I travelled 30km and I'm in good shape for tomorrow to go somewhere else if I where running I don't think I would have done more than 14km and I would be absolutely broken to bits

Typical calorie burn for me is 50 calories per mile on a bike and a 100 per mile in a run. I can travel twice the distance on a bike at the same overall intensity and effort, and thus end up at pretty much the same figure. More important to know is what the after exercise burn is. You would likely tax your muscles far harder on the run and likely need more actual muscular recovery and calorie consumption.
