KFM Wing Build & Intro... My start into flying wings

  • Decided to take a leap into the world of flying wings. This is something I have never done before. Flying wings generally only have 2 control surfaces called elevons...they function as an elevator and ailerons. So only 2 servos are required for flying wings.
This particular wing is the KFM wing. With KFM, foamboard is stacked on top of each other to create the airfoil rather than the using spars, bevel cuts, and foldover to create the airfoil shape. So it's much quicker and easier to create a KFM based airfoil. This particular wing is highly recommend not just for the simplicity of quickness of the build BUT also for its ability to take abuse and survive crashes.

The KFM Wing is particularly intriguing also. It's even SIMPLER!!! 😲

Yeah very simple. I'm really wanting to see the durability of it. I do want to fly it successfully but a part of me wants to crash it real good too... Is that wrong? Lol

      Wrong?? Not sure....
That little guy in the back of your head wants to know if she can actually take it.
And I take it, you don't have millions invested in Computer Simulation equipment. 😜😂

Exciting stuff!!! 😁 I've been intrigued myself. With RC Flying Wings in general.
You already know that I come from an entirely different background...
Real Flying Wings required SO MANY advanced technology and Avionics - just to fly in a STRAIGHT line....
The fact that these can be replicated in $1.00 Foam Core Board and TWO Servos - is baffling to me!!! 😲😖 Yet it works, and flies WELL. Of COURSE it wasn't possible at all, in the 72MHz days, without digital Channel Mixing! Still.......
An associate of Jack Northrop, the primary Designer of the Wing, explained to me the absolute simplicity of its operation - which was anything BUT simple!!
But that at the core, is the purest, most efficient Flying Machines ever.
Northrop's first production Flying Wing, the XB-35, built in 1944, was the FIRST Large Aircraft that could carry a 9000lb payload, over 8000 Miles! Meaning, had Britain LOST, WE could have Bombed Berlin, from Boston!!
Back to advanced Avionics, that Plane had unstable Yaw swings... That made accurate Bombing impossible.
It wasn't until 1987, when the Avionics had caught up, that the B-2 Stealth Bomber - SAME dimensions, weight and a pure Flying Wing like the 1940's design, was successful.
Your Aviation History Lesson for the Day!! 😋

Thats interesting. Really it doesn't surprise me that they've at least attempted a flying wing in previous times. In the early days folks had some really creative ideas!

Also, back then, People were ALLOWED to think that big, and squander millions of Bank's Dollars on ideas that seemed crazy at the time...
The only reason why we didn't have a Flying Wing Bomber right after WWII? Politics! 😠😠
Convair had invested MORE in buying Congressmen than anyone, Northrop didn't even want to play that game....
So the Air Force soon CANCELLED the updated YB-49 (an all JET version of the XB-35), to go with Convair's B-36!
"6 turning and 4 burning" BIG, SLOW, problematic Lumbering Bomber, that the Air Force HATED!!!!!
The only ones who love that GINORMOUS Bird, is Historians and Model Builders!!! 😲
The 49 flew 15,000ft higher than the 36, was 150 mph FASTER than the 36, and believe it or not, VERY hard to find on primitive Radar!!! The World's first "Stealth" Aircraft!
So now you have some History, with the controversy. 😉

Nice choice, been looking at that wing and other options for when I want to try elevons again(I've had a lot of trouble with them myself). The stock FT Long Ez is notorious for having a few bugs and being difficult to fly. If you still have interest in it, I'd say modify the design. Make it bigger with a more durable wing, and it should fly well.

Yeah I didn't get along too well with the Long EZ. I am thinking the KFM will do better...especially in terms of durability. There are some planes I think that FT should have made larger initially...the Long EZ is probably one of them as well.

Please do a detailed video of the PicoWing. It small and looks like fun. Would be great to build along

I'll check into it...a small wing sounds like a cool project.

Cool stuff.. You going to video the maiden?
