I appreciate your patience with this rascal of a horse. I must admit i was giggling throughout this video, not necessarily at you, but to the horse, talk about having his own mind. I am quite sure he knows what he is doing, and loves it.. I love it! :) Good work, you kept his feet happy even though he is a pain to you! Thank you for sharing!
Yep, basically dealing with a 1200 lb brat. Had a horse do that and made sure to work him before the trim , it helped but it's still tiring no matter what.
I’m sorry Caleb, but I couldn’t help giggling through this video, he certainly did make it as hard as he could for you, but, I think he was playing you, just like a naughty bored kid😂gee wizz that was hard work, great job though, thoroughly enjoy your videos, thank you for being so patient with him, and thank you for posting, take care Caleb.👍😂💙🐎
I don't know why I watch these videos, I know nothing about horses, but it is really relaxing and satisfying to watch, especially you explain the whole process, and learning what you people do with shoeing. Thanks. Australia.
He is a natural comedian Caleb. Just cannot help himself in front of the camera. Knowing he irritates you makes him think he is doing his part in the movie 😁. Great job and thank you!!
I marvel at the work you farriers do. The horses that have been exercised first seem to give the least amount of trouble. After watching a farrier work I wonder if there is a nice hot tub waiting for you...makes my back ache just watching these videos. BTW...good job with a difficult horse.🤗
One thing that helps in work that keeps you bent over for long periods, is a good chiropractor that understands your work, and says come over, we will work you in.
@@robertqueberg4612 Oh, I bet! Probably like lawyers...keep one on retainer. Still at some point the chiro is going to say..."man, you need to find another line of work". (maybe).
Have you tried to give him a hay bag to work on while you are trimming his feet? or some one to hold a lick while trimming? Just a suggestion. Love your work. Great job even on a active horse!!!
Horses and kids. It seems that we only remember the two extremes of behavior. I have heard of “sure-fire” cures for this type of behavior. A long piece of duct tape stuck to the nose as a distraction, to my best friend’s uncle biting the end of a mule’s ear off to make it stand for shoeing. That was before Mike Tyson was born.
This is me and my daughters horse. Mine is such a prick! My daughter passed away from cancer at 16. We bought him as a 2 year old, he's now 19. He was owned by all men, 4 owners before us! My daughter through her treatments, and an allograph trained our horse alongside a very well known trainer. He is so f'n light, leg and seat, side steps, and my daughter jumped him in a bosal. Son of a bitch prick knows better. Thank God mine isn't shod, he's got very nice feet. Sorry but he drives me crazy and yep, exhausting!
I feel your pain my friend. I have been shoeing my quarter horse for 20 years now and he is the exact same way. It feels like I get a little shorter after each shoeing! It really sucks when its hot and humid. Keep up the nice work.
Another great video! Thank you for a longer version, I do feel bad that your friends horse misbehaved so much, but I am glad you were able to complete it. Is he like that with his hind feet as well?
I was watching a farrier do a horse like this. He goofed around so much that the farrier lost his patience & slapped him but good w/ the flat side of the rasp. Strangely enough, he straightened right up!
Horse was defo doing it on purpose, he knew you were frustrated. Animals are so incredible, almost like they have a 6th sense. But you did well and did the job, even with lots of physical exertion.
Geez, what a tiring video to watch!! And I just got to the barn and am waiting for my farrier to arrive for my 2 four year olds. They are due for a trim, and 1 needs shoes put on as he's getting foot sore, even just doing groundwork in the arena. He has very little sole depth to him. So shoes for him for sure. The other one is doing great and has tons of hoof. I hope you have a great weekend, Caleb!! Best Regards from your friend, the Retired Paramedic and Horse Trainer in Ontario, Canada, Jenn 💖🇨🇦🇺🇲
I had to smile when he about knocked you over!!! I had a buckskin mare that hated, let me reiterate hated men! We’d have to catch her up the night before the farrier was due! I think she could smell him coming, lol, she’d act a fool - I hated we’d have to twitch her!! Needless to say, was hard to find a farrier. 😂
I hope that your buddy appreciates what you have done for him I know some farriers that would just pack up and go home rather than work with this horse.
Is the DIM the same stuff my dentist uses to make a casting of a tooth for a crown? I hate that tray, I always feel like gagging when it's in my mouth.
If this horse has trouble standing while you shoe him, maybe it's because it is uncomfortable for him, maybe he has a sore back or an arthritic joint. Has he been seen by a vet or a body worker? Horses do this for a reason and not just because they are being "bad". Give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe put his foot down more often, you are holding it for quite a long time.
I watched a video where the farrier couldn’t hold up a foot cause the horse kicked and moved too much. He put a 6 inch piece of duct tape on the horses nose and it stood still for him. I wonder if this is true.
He’s a stinker but he does have really poor caudal structure. I wonder if it’s harder for him to stand nicely, even with a shoe on for support when his foot has the issues that it does. Not pointing fingers or anything. Just observing.
Caleb! Why WHY is this horse lickin the doggoned WALL!? He's either a sweetie or nuts or super thirsty lickin the sweaty wall! Yeah? Whatever, I like this horse! You're ver patient! Thank you, arthur b (Ngai)
I'm sorry! I was laughing! I've had horses and totally respect how difficult it is to shoe horses and truly appreciate your craft. What he needs is the rasp slapped on his belly to get his attention to behave. You're right. He is a jerk!
What a brat. 😂😂😂 I have a horse that likes to pull our farriers hat off. He also loves to try a to pull his shirt off over his head, ruffles his hair with his teeth, etc. Of course this is a horse you never bend over with your back to him when you’re trying to do something because he’ll come up quietly behind you, put his nose under your butt and lift sending you ass over tea kettle. He’s our practical joker. He has a whole repertoire of annoying tricks.
I have a big TB mare who I barefoot trim. She is very difficult, I mean very difficult for my little 5’4”, 110 lb self. After years of studying equine behavior, I’ve learned thee is no such thing as a jerk horse, a bad horse, there’s only a horse speaking in the only language he knows….behavior. So, I used a positive reinforcement training method to help my painful mare be able to accept the hard part of standing on three legs long enough to let me trim and balance the foot!! It’s taken some time, but the end result is less time, less stress, for us both. I click and treat frequently when my mare offers a good position, and I might click and reward that effort 1000 times in the course of a trim, in order to reinforce the positive aspects of a difficult, even painful task.
Awesome but that's not my job lol that's the owners job. And unfortunately there are some horses that don't stand because they are untrained or because they have been allowed to be an asshole. It is not always because of pain
@@caleberickson_The_Dying_Breed well, ok, the behavior may seem “jerk”, but it’s honest, the only way a horse knows how to communicate behavior. Yes, owners need to understand equine behavior and learning theory!!❤️
Try putting a roughly 6 inch piece of duct tape on the horses nose running down the middle and hanging off the muzzle. It distracts them.might work, I've seen some really bad horses stand perfect doing this.
My god, who left the horrible scar on your left inside forearm? That is some gnarly keloid scarring. Can't you hobble that horse so you can work on him better?
Had a 6year old mare like that, you gonna make me stand on three you going to work for every cent she was beautiful appy but stubborn made the ferrior cry
I have a few horses that like to throw me around and jerk it away. What I do to let them know that they are being jerks is put a chin chain on and through the halter run a small rope back to my elbo so I can let them know they are goofing up at the exact second. With those kind that is the only way to talk to them.
Theses kind of horses you can just see them drop that shoulder and just lay on the farrier, makes me very angry . I have just stepped out from under these critters and they literally fall over sometimes, makes them stand up and pay attention .
The owner needs to get somebody to hold the horse, maybe stick a bucket under his nose, at least scold him when he's a brat...If he knows better, then he needs a come-to-Jesus moment...
I appreciate your patience with this rascal of a horse. I must admit i was giggling throughout this video, not necessarily at you, but to the horse, talk about having his own mind. Man what a tough customer that horse is.

If its a lick, as soon as he pulls his foot away, the lick goes away. Soon he will stand and be happy with letting him have his feet.

I learned to shoe on horses like this one. A bunch of dude horses in Estes Park .
Such a stinker this one is!!! You are so patient with him.
I take it this horse would be " riding the short bus"
Awesome job
Better living through chemistry Man !
i had a horse like that but he only did it to one Farrier that he really didn't care for lol
Maybe he was licking some walls with lead paint on them.
Doing a good job

Mine is like this for the farrier due to having arthritis is both back hocks. It explains their action but doesn’t make it any less annoying.
This horse has been checked out throughly. Bottom line is there are assholes in horses and people. He's this way because it was aloud for years

I've had only marginal success with the tape it doesn't do a whole lot in my experience
Loved the video
❤️❤️❤️
He's not wild, he's not mean, he's just a dork! I just watched a guy in the UK (Pete) get kicked so I'd say you're ahead of the game.
I have had farriers slap them in the belly with the rasp when they are like this and it seemed to help and it didn't bother me
feed him a little marijauna, lol.
Nice work. But holy cow, that´s one nasty scar. Don´t tell me it was a horse pulling job from your hands, with nails unringed...
No I actually had several scars in that area from nails but I tore 2 tendons and the surgical scar Coverd them all up
