I am starting seeds to keep me busy! Making comments to hopefully grow your channel( more people need to know about you) because you offer great advice and very easy to follow instructions. 🤗 From a fellow far N Texan preparing today for our Winter storm warning ❄️
Clubs and late nights are out for 2025. Birds and pollinators are in! Great tips and reminders. Like someone else said, you make it and we will watch it. 😊 I’m so glad you make them! Looking forward to next month’s checklist.
Thanks Amanda! It's really cold, but great to know that we can still be doing things in the garden. I've had some health issues for a few months. But I'm much better and getting the itch to get outside! Your vedio has given me an even bigger itch. 😅 Blessings to you and your family in the New Year!!!!
We just got our "big" snowfall here in Maryland, and just before, I filled all my feeders (9). I think all the birds in our area came here to feast!! I would say there's been no less than 4 dozen birds out there. For Christmas, my husband got me a Bird Buddy, the feeders with a built-in camera. I wasn't sure I'd like it, but I was wrong. It's so much fun. Also, another youtuber talked about an app called Merlin. It will record bird sounds and tell you which bird you're hearing. I've had at least a dozen different birds recognized by the app. It, too, is a lot of fun. So, more birds, I'm right there with you!!
❄️ I really did enjoy this. It is so helpful in deciding what I should be taking care of out in my garden in January. You did a great job with listing all the details! (lol chores 😂)
Zone 8b PNW and I always wish I could leave my perennials up for the birds but all this rain turns them into mush. It's a little muddy for gardening around here right now but I have been sheet mulching and spreading compost. I noticed yesterday that the hellebores and snow drops are peeking through the soil. 🥰
I am in West Texas 8b. Love your video. My purple fountain grass is very aggressive here. It's perennial for me and triples in size each year, drowns everything out near it. To keep it in check I would need to pull it up and divide it annually. Maybe I should put it in pots because it's a bit of a pain. Today I took cuttings off of my autumn Joy Sedum which is still flowering, and brought in a couple of geranium babies. I wish I had taken cuttings from my coleus, but it's already gone. One of my goals for the new year is reusing or expanding what I have. Good luck with this hard freeze we're about to have. Happy gardening.💙
Hey! It’s great you want to attract wildlife. Unfortunately, that can mean things like armadillos as they are a natural part of the environment haha. As for birds (and I’m not saying you have to go all native or abandon cut flowers), but natives truly are the best plants for attracting birds. It is becoming more popular and there are more resources than ever available. I’m not sure exactly what resources are available to you locally because I live in a completely different area of the country, but native plant finder is always a great place to start. Just type in your zip code and you get lists of native plants to your county. Birds and plants are intricately linked. It’s truly a “plant it and they will come”. I’m sure there are other resources for native bird plants to Texas as well. Wildlife gardening just takes it to a whole other level in my opinion. I’ve never looked back and almost exclusively plant natives now because the joy you get in attracting and supporting your local native wildlife is beyond anything else gardening has brought me. It makes you realize how much power and positive impact we have in just our small backyards. Plus it goes beyond supporting wildlife, native plants are better for soil biology/health, water filtration, cleaning out pollutants from the environment, clean air, reducing runoff/erosion, less need for fertilizers and pesticides which pollute the land, and others.
Thanks for sharing your expertise! I usually refer to one of our state universities that specializes in natives. For the armadillos, they only hang out in my garden when we have a drought … they light my raised beds that are on drip because the soil is still soft and they can access food easier than the dried hard clay of our native soil during a drought. I live in a newer suburb that destroyed the local wildlife but it is slowly working its way back ❤️
❄💙📖 Very good tips for winter gardening jobs! I have been going through my pots and tools, redoing my garden journal, deciding about seeds, wondering why I didn't get to planting all my bulbs--now going in a pot in the garage! Happy Winter Days!!!
loved the video. thank you for sharing great tips and info. i will be doing some cleaning in my garden real soon. this time of season i get a little down. but, i have lots to get done it's just getting started with it. lol hope you have a great day!!!
Hi Amanda, I enjoy your videos. You provide a lot of good information. 😊 Can you show the Henbit and Chickweed in the camera, so I can identify which ones I have? I am in Zone 6B in MA. I think I have Henbit, but it might be Chickweed. Thank you. 🌞
I’ll be sure to do that next time! Henbit has purple flowers and it’s leave are have scalloped, round leaves. Chickweed has white flowers and its leaves have a point on them. Hope that helps!
Thank you so much for the advise . I’m in Ft Worth and new to gardening from May of 2024. It has seemed pretty confusing as to when to prune which plants. I m going to make you my go to Gardner this year if that’s alright with you. I keep buying seeds to plant now but really not knowing which ones to plant. I have a greenhouse and grow lights and heater, so I’m ready to plant some seeds. Wish me luck!
All great things to do in the garden! I know I've asked this before, but what is that evergreen next to your driveway where you are pulling weeds? It seems like a real Texas trooper for year round interest
They are Dwarf Alberta Spruce. They struggled with spider mites when they were first planted but haven’t had any issues in a few years. They have been very slow growers which I am happy with.
Great video- very thorough, easy to follow, and informative. I have a question about bird seed... how do you prevent/ manage discarded seeds under the feeders that usually create a weedy mess on the ground? Thanks!!
I don’t stress about it but mine is in the grass … I would feel differently if the seeds were falling in a garden bed. However, I’ve seen some people mulch with cardboard around the base of their birdfeeders to catch the dropped seeds.
I created a "bird" garden under my bird feeder this past season. My kids and I loved watching what the birds planted for us...sunflowers, milo, millet. Then birds also ate off the plant that grew!
It’s a Dwarf Alberta Spruce … struggled with spider mites for the first two years but has thrived since then. It is very slow growing. I bought them as after Christmas clearance plants!
I ordered some journal documents from your sister and assumed you use a 3 ring or 5 ring binder but that isn't what I got. Where did you get your binder?
I use a disc planner system … basically it’s a set of plastic discs that hold the pages together. You can get them on Amazon and my sister sells the covers as well. Here a link to them on Amazon … amzn.to/404jOGI

I am so happy to hear that you like the video editing process! You do your videos as you need and want them to be...and we will watch:)
Thanks! I really appreciate your support!
Thanks sweet lady. You’ve helped this new Gardner immensely. I’m 60 and thus was my first year, I couldn’t have done it without you. 😊
That’s amazing! You’re going to be a fantastic gardener!

Yep, I’m not a fan of mushy plants!
Love that bird feeder!

It’s so interesting to hear how plants behave differently in different zones! It sounds like you already have a good jump on next season!
Have a wonderful day
You too!

What garden beds from Amazon are your favorites? I have $380 worth of Amazon gift cards and was thinking about getting some raised garden beds.
This is the link to my most recent beds purchase!

oh and maybe more container gardening?
Definitely have more of that this year!
Thank you for the info! Can you share what type of evergreen is the one at 10:25? Looks beautiful for our Texas 8b area.
