Why do many people say that black people should not go to the Sturgis Area? Every year near the time of the sturgis rally this discussion comes up as to why we shouldnt go. There were various reasons mentioned but I as the leader of the Peace Army took the time out to take a motorcycle trip to sturgis. This is what I found out....There are more people who are welcoming than you could ever think! Dont be afraid to get out and explore.

As a white 80 yr old Floridian, I am so sick of the media trying to scare people of each race against each other. Go where you want and do what you wish without fear. 99.9% of us just want to get along and live in peace. The media was trying to scare minorities away from Florida needlessly. I’m thrilled that you had the same emotional reaction to that trip that I had. I felt your sense of awe. So very glad you went and will go back!

I truly wish that all Americans could take the time and be able to afford to travel and see our great country. There is too much crap coming out of Washington and Hollywood which just seems to divide us all as a country. I wish you the best.

I am a white man in his late 50s. I appreciate greatly the messages in this video. No one should have ever told G-Kue (sp?) that Sturgis was not for a black man. No one should tell people that they can or cannot do anything because of their skin pigment or ethnicity. We should all be free to do as we wish so long as we harm no others.
I also really appreciate the love for America shown in this video. I choose to see it differently, from two wheels I power with my legs, but it is beautiful. Recently, I was riding in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Beautiful!

I am not a biker, but a wannabe wanderer. My parents loved to travel, and loved the open road. My dad always used to say: "The adventure doesn't begin when you reach your destination, it begins when you begin planning your adventure." I was on a long drive from Williams, AZ to Tucumcari, NM. It was on the long straight section to Santa Rosa, that I began to get really sleepy. As I was being lulled to sleep by the road, I suddenly heard someone call my name. It was my dads voice, he was telling me how beautiful this part of the country was during the day and what Santa Rosa and Tucumcari were like and if I had time to visit our family in KS. In turn I told him how everyone was doing, that we were all doing okay. We had a great conversation and I eventually reached my destination, a Love's truck stop in Tucumcari. I cried, then thanked him for keeping me company and awake. Was it really the spirit of my dad keeping me awake, I don't know, but I like to think it was.

Of course bad things can happen, but people are generally good, and race and political persuasion have nothing to do with it. When you are hungry, or wet, or cold and someone helps you, your prejudice dissolves. But sit at home and you just identify with a narrative.

You just won another subscriber. I'm white, my best friend was black. George Floyd and the lies of media separated us. I hadn't even seen the news, my father was dying. I was told not to feed him anymore and felt like I was murdering him. I called my best friend. She brought up Floyd and said I was racist and blocked me. I never even got to tell her what I was going through. Or find out why I was suddenly different to her. I will never see her the same. I love people. I grew up color blind. And that someone would tell you its not for you is ridiculous! Live your best life. I envy you and pray for trips like these on my bike. Thank you for sharing, brother. Hugs from Texas, from a loving sister on 2 wheels!

This brought tears to my eyes. I am an old white woman who went cross-country 5 times in my youth. Loved every minute. The concept that people would have tried to separate you from that experience breaks my heart so much. You seem like such a nice guy and that alone will open 90% of the doors and the 10% of people who might close the door to you, in those cases you would be better off to let those particular doors to close. But the Bible says to brush the dust off of your feet when you aren't welcome someplace and as a Christian, if Jesus had to talk to people way back then about sometimes not being welcome, we can't expect different.

I love sharing this story. My late husband, a black man, and I were moving from Seattle back to Virginia Beach and we ended up in Sturgis the first night of the bike festivities.. It was so hot that day. I had been putting towels in the cooler and then wrapping them around my husband's neck because our AC stop working in northern Idaho. We were beat, we had our 1yr old with us. My husband had battled the Uhaul all day as it wasn't loaded very well and his arms and shoulders were burning. We stopped at several hotels and discovered everything was sold out. At our last try before we ended up sleeping in our Ford Explorer we went into the motel lobby. A typical biker guy was checking in. He was a portrait of what you think of as a biker. He had it all, longhair, leathers, patches the whole deal, tatted up and as tall as my husband who was 6-6. Some people might have found him rather intimidating. As he was walking to leave he stopped at the door as the front desk lady apologized to us and explained there was no room anywhere in town. The biker turned around and said "They can have my room, I can crash with friends tonight." I will never forget it. We thanked him over and over again and then he rode off on his bike to find his friends. I was used to uncomfortable stares from other white people when I was out with my husband. It was 1999 and we had been living in Idaho for some time before going to Seattle. A mixed race couple in Idaho was a rare thing back then. This man was so kind to us, it really touched us both. We didn't get his name and we always regretted it. I hope we have passed the kindness on over the last 24 years. No matter where you go there will be people who hate. Our children have felt it especially as me moved between Boise and Virginia many times over the years and permanently in 2008. Ignore the hateful & embrace the loving.
Our son , Zeke, who was with us on that trip is almost 25 and rides a huge Yamaha Roadstar. He wonders about going to Sturgis one day and wonders how he would be received there as a black (biracial) man. We lost my husband at the start of the pandemic and the following year my father-in-law who used to ride with a club when he was in the military died of cancer. My son misses his dad and wishes he could share his bike adventures with his Papa who was affectionately known as Doc-G.
Edit :Zeke's birthday is August 29th and I think I'm going to order him one of your hoodies.
One of the other experiences on that trip that was more than profound for my husband was Little Big Horn. He got chills and said it felt like he had been there before. Ride safe!

And for the beautiful sites you got to experience. I AM SO PROUD OF YOU FOR MAKING THIS TRIP and not letting anyone tell you that you shouldn't!!
I was raised on motorcycles, my late husband and I planned on buying two bikes and we're saving to do so, he took ill suddenly when I was 40, just before he slipped into a coma that eventually took him from me forever, he made me promise to buy myself a Harley and ride the tires off of it, and he would be riding with me as my angel. A year after his passing I bought that Harley, I rode it every day. 2 yrs of having it, in 2009 I rode the entire Natchez Trace Parkway from the top in Tennessee to Natchez Mississippi, round trip was 1300 miles for me. It was a beautiful and peaceful ride, and also a test of my endurance for long distance riding on my own. My plan was to make my husband's and I dream ride out west, see all the amazing beautiful sites. So I began saving for that ride for June of 2010 and I was so excited for it. But I ended up having a bad accident in March of 2010, non bike related, that ended up changing my entire life forever. I was 3 short months away from finally living out our dream ride, it still breaks my heart to this day.
So just know that I took such great joy in watching you enjoying and experiencing all of the beauty that is out there and not letting anyone stop you from doing what you deserve to do! Your Mama is undoubtedly VERY proud of you, I certainly am! Much love and respect❤

I don't know what you're talking about with the 50's... I TRULY hope that you aren't talking about Jim Crow laws and Sundown towns being equivalent to chattel slavery!!! Jim Crow and the Reconstruction era where definitely prejudiced and at times outright rac!st, but that's gone on all over the world since the beginning to EVERY "type" of person... almost always those of lower economic means. The History of the USA isn't exactly what any of us think it was, first person in the US to own a human FOR LIFE was named Anthony Johnson (look him up). 1 million troops died in the Civil War, some Southern Black folk fought on the Confederate side.
Lastly, this COUNTRY never owned any person. People owned slaves, keep in mind that there were quite a few Black men who reached the "status" of Planter (50+ slaves, I believe). How can it be dividing by race if African kings flooded the market through violent raids and African-Americans also owned African slaves? It was a terrible stain on our History but it's far more complex than you make it out to be. Study up, my friend... you're not a victim anymore than anyone else in the same economic class. Voter suppression, lynchings, racial gun control all affected lower economic White folk too. Rise above the rhetoric, it's tough to let go of hate, but you'll never know freedom unless you do. ☮& ♥

Needed to see this today thinking about my Pops .Most beautiful part where your dear Mother sent you a sign with the sunshine at the " dignity of earth and sky" monument . She is watching over you ,shining on you friend. There is nothing but love out there for everyone , hate dies when you shine light on it and call it out 🥹🙏✨🪽

I feel ya' man... My father committed suicide when I was 22...
I'm 50 now and there is not a day that goes by that I don't want to talk to my dad...
It hurts, but we gotta keep going for them!
And NEVER apologize for showing emotion for a lost family member...

yes, you're absolutely right, you shouldn't have to apologize for something so natural, your love for your father is a natural and beautiful thing. God bless you and your father!

As a fellow black man and traveler...NEVER not go somewhere because of someone else's bad experience, experience it for yourself. As long as you're safe and being cool, you can go anywhere you want. I "lucky" enough to go to Air Force Field Training at Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota and I had the chance to see most of that...I was also there during the actual Sturgis Bike fest...It was amazing seeing all of the bikes there. South Dakota is definitely a travel stop and something that is a must see!

As a Native American, you're invited TO ALL OF our great nation. I was incredibly moved by that Dignity statue and memorial. That's sacred lands and I truly believe your mom smiled down on you. She kept you safe during that ride, my brother. I hope you one day visit my beautiful state of Arizona; Monument Valley, Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, Sedona and beyond. Safe travels, brother.
