- The Paris Olympics are here, but is the city ready? Not a single Olympic Games has stayed under budget in the last 60 years. Not London, not Rio, not Athens - they all bled cash. Cities are starting to wake up to the fact that hosting the event may not be worth it. In this video, I travel to Paris to interview locals about the truth behind the economics, hidden costs, and long-term impact of the Olympics.

You know that meme about letting an average guy compete in the Olympics? We should do that just so everyone watching will know how bloody good the Olympians are. Would be legitimately fun and it might increase viewership too IMO.

I actually live in Paris, and the video is very accurate. You could mention as well that France has no government right now, the olympic games are coming at the worst time. In a huge political crisis.

@@This_amari The French public elected a LePen right-wing coalition government in a majority, but a left-wing coalition led by Emanuel Macron’s party engaged in a political coup d’état which appears to have been a marginal success. Many right-wing would-be parliament members either ceded or were presumably bribed to flip in order to keep Le Pen out of the ministry. The government had been in a stalemate as to who actually takes Macron’s place, and what proportion of the parliament (s)he will have.

As a Londoner, the 2012 Olympics was the only thing anyone could think about for YEARS, even non fans. On the run up to it, there were massive festivals, massive general london infrastructure projects, the atmosphere and hype throughout the city was evident everywhere you go even 3-4 years prior.
Nothing has been able to top the 2012 opening ceremony since.

Yes I was in London during those years. I honestly think it was a massive success. Everyone was buzzing! And the area they redeveloped has remained a success to this day, so I believe.
Same emotions as a Sydneysider. Actually, Sydney 2000 is one of the greatest moments in Australian history- even if I myself was merely a toddler back then. Obviously with some personal bias, I think vibe-wise it was the greatest Olympics in the modern era.

As a person who lived in Greece for 22 years and also during the Olympic games I can tell you that it was an excuse to construct infrastructure that Athens desperately needed at the time. The Olympics was an excuse to build stuff that they needed like a new airport, more metro lines (there was an existing one that was a 100 years old), a bigger tram network and to add more facilities that were needed to support modern tourism and a modern society. It was also a chance to advertise the country and show the world that it could be successful despite having the Daily Mail trespassing in building works trying to prove it couldn't happen. People say they are still paying for it, of course they are because they are paying for stuff they needed anyway to support the local economy and the tourism that Greece has anyway. Other countries that hosted they Olympics may not have had this benefit as Paris, London etc did not need it.
I knew the cons of the Olympics outweighed the pros, but I didn't know the cons outweighed the pros by THIS much. If the Games are this detrimental to the host countries, maybe they should consider making the Olympic Games more about the sports again and less about the show/event itself. Would take some pressure off the athletes as well without diminishing their incredible performance. This was a very well made video! You earned a new sub. :)
Not to mention that many pilots and flight attendants don’t want to take flights to Paris during the Olympics. They can’t go anywhere, there’s so many people, the city’s not ready, lots of construction, it’s just sheer chaos. My mom is a pilot who flies to Paris quite often, but she has avoided Paris like the plague during the Olympics. With her seniority she’s able to avoid those trips, but one of her friends is fluent in French and doesn’t have much seniority, so she’ll HAVE to go during the Olympics and is dreading it

@@pedro6720 the whole tourist area (Arc de Triumph to The Eiffel Tower I believe) with all the landmarks and tourist spots are closed during the Olympics to prevent terrorism. You have to get a permit either 30 or 60 days in advance (I don’t remember which it is) to go into that area and it involves a lot of paperwork, showing your ID everywhere, and it’s just a ton of hassle. You can’t do anything on a limb

Honestly he isn’t wrong. Same reason I was excited for the World Cup, Qatar is a restrict country, however during the World Cup everyone went nuts and the government freezes some laws for the occasion. Celebrations everywhere everyday even inside the metro which was my favourite since I use the metro to commute to and from work when I normal days you will be arrested.

This is very good. As a person from Montreal. Host of 1976 Summer games. we also paid heavy taxes to pay off the debts. In 2024. We are still paying to repair the crumbling structures. Too much. Not worth it. Forget it. Lose lose from every angle. Thanks for educating the world about the truth.

This explains a lot why 2 weeks ago flight tickets for Paris were cheaper than any other country in Europe. It didn't hit me the Olympics would have such a negative impact nobody would want to travel.
Semi-permanent host could be a good option. Another option I can think of is have a region or continent share the hosting then have rotation of hosts regions. This happened during the FIBA World Cup in 2023, wherein Japan, Philippines and Indonesia shared hosting rights and where the semi finals and finals where held in the Philippines. In this way, countries can share the cost of hosting while having better crowd control and security management. This could also help the country maximize its resources and availability of facilities.
And not make it so big and specially with the infrastructure.
If the ioc don't change their business model in the next 8-10 years they are legitimately done imo. The illusion of profit is gone and the prestige of hosting the olympics as well to the point where cities don't even have to compete to get the games since not enough cities are trying to even host them. Either they remove a lot of sports so that less infrastructure needs to be built, which wouldn't be appreciated by fans and athletes of those sports, or they split the competitions to multiple close host cities or maybe even host countries like the world cup for example does. Either way something needs to change asap

Honestly you saying that Paris wasn’t ready to host checks out from all the mistakes and controversies from the opening ceremony (mis-naming S. Korea with N. Korea, the “Lord’s Supper” incident, etc.)
And also the games themselves with doping from China and also a controversial women's boxing event at the moment too, with a lot of issues on both sides of arguments.

Let's all remember why the olympics started in the first place. It's a war game, designed to showcase warriors. THAT used to be the sell for the nations, people were afraid to invade you if you did good in the games.
One part that is overlooked is the amount of people who are hired for this giant gig. Just in broadcast alone about 500 professionals travel to Paris and they need places to stay and food to eat.
I think it has more to do with how the French are as they don't like this type of event, they don't like crowding and chaos.
Living in Toronto and seeing the French complain about construction made me laugh hysterically. We are constantly under construction and are not hosting anything, none of the constructions happening now have anything to do with the 2026 WC.
Also people who are not hired. The Games are relying on 20,000 unpaid volunteers to work for billionaires. Maybe they believe it will bring them prestige. It just makes them fools.

So, while you may think the 20,000 to whom you refer are fools that is simply your opinion. Those who volunteer obviously think otherwise and, since anyone volunteering doesn’t impact you, why is your negative opinion of volunteers relevant to anybody but yourself?
According to the US Census Bureau, only 22% of people speak a language other than English. So 30% of people knowing English is already way higher than Americans counting all second languages. The french knowing any foreign language goes up to 44%. So no, "Learn English" doesn't seem fair. Maybe everyone should try to learn another language.

Nonsense. The Census provides statistics on what languages people speak AT HOME, that is, their langue maternelle. It doesn't even provide any information on languages people have learned, certainly not to the incredibly low standard of the Parisiens in the video.

Excellent video. As someone living in Brisbane I already feel down about 2032. In recent months the local government changed their minds and doesn't want to spend the money to host a great Olympics. Yet the current stadiums are in serious need of upgrading. I think there should be a legacy element to the games. Infrastructure invested needs to support the future. I hope we can turn things around.
Boston almost considered bidding for this year and, considering I had to wait over 40 minutes for the train yesterday even though the north half of that train is shut down, and seeing our traffic... thank GOD we didn't.

I was in Paris last month and I was super surprised by the fact I that I haven't seen promised crouds of tourists, I haven't seen garbage on the streets and Parisians are actually super nice and such an interesting people to be around

London did get a fair bit of that money back after the land was sold off after the Olympics and the Olympic village was sold as flats. But yes it was a major loss leader. London had a legacy vision and it has predominantly come to fruition. Some of the venues were altered and reused, some were taken down and erected elsewhere in the UK. A crew were temporary, and others like the O2 and Excel were already built. I hope Paris has the same sort of legacy. At least a lot of the venues were built already like Stade de France etc.

Los Angeles actually made a small profit hosting the Olympics. They did this by using existing facilities, and putting up the athletes in college dorms. They actually used the stadium built in the 1930s-perfectly good. If managed correctly, the games can be staged at a reasonable cost. The problem is that local politicians all want to get rich-they get graft and kickback$$ buy having the national government pay to put up the white elephant buildings. Look at Rio de Janeiro and Athens-both built enormous venues that are now unused and rotting away. Hosting the Olympic games is basically a way to launder money
LA made in profit on the 1984 Games while funding 100% of the cost of the Games frim private sources; no government / taxpayer money was used to fund any part of the Games. The same is also the case for the 2028 LA Games being funded from private sources.
I know that LA using private sources and generating a profit contradicts this video’s narrative of all Olympic Games going wildoy over budget and generating losses, but some mention of LA’s experiences in hosting the Games would have added objectivity to the narrative in this video.

“ When you think the Olympics, what do you think of?”
I think of the coral reefs and eco system in Tahiti that had to be destroyed for the surfing, I think of the people that had to built yet another Olympic Stadion, village and so on and weren’t paid enough and all the recourses being used for said buildings when there are enough hotels and venues already. I had to think of all the people giving thousands to an industry that could help so much in other parts of the world. I think of how privileged we are to indulge in this kind of thing when others are frighting for their existence.
And I think of how I will never be able to understand why sports always get a free pass for so many things when it comes to environmental and societal rules..
i think if people cant figure out how to make the olympics financially and environmentally sustainable and good for the host cities we should just stop having them. my personal suggestion is choosing a different city for each event (or maybe grouping them together or something so all the swimmers and divers are in the same place. idk). and that way one city doesnt have to bear the brunt of hosting the olympics and construct the olympic village and spend billions on new facilities. it might feel a bit different but at least it wont bankrupt every city that hosts
My suggestion is they pick 4 PERMANENT cities for the WINTER games and the 4 for the SUMMER games that will rotate between cities and each host city should reside in hemisphere of the globe ... The benefits with this system is obviously the Olympic Village, Stadiums, infrastructure etc. will be be already established and not need to be built from the ground floor up every fours years!!! And for the North & Western quadrant I suggest LA!!!
Games in 1984 Los Angeles had a 80 million dollar surplus.
The money left went to Amateur Athletics Foundation that created youth sports programs.

Lot of misinformation:
1. Los Angeles and Atlanta both met their budgets when adjusted for inflation and turned profits.
2. Several times, cities will include infrastructure projects that would’ve happened w/o the games into the overall budget, skewing numbers.
3. It’s a question of priorities that the host and bid cities have. Makes it hard to judge the worthwhileness of a city hosting.
4. The games bring in tourists and investment both before, during, and after the games: Barcelona, Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Turin, Vancouver, London and more have proved this point.
interesting insights
1. The LA games made $230 million in profit and Atlanta made $20 million in profit. This is equivalent to the projected profit margin of a mid budget movie. And the combined spend for those games were (inf. Adjusted) in excess of 4 billion dollars, considerably more than any investment expected to turn that kind of profit. LA profited precisely because it contradicted your second point, recycling and/or up scaling existing infrastructure, making it a universal exception to the data in the video, not an example of its inaccuracy. Atlanta came in way over budget, and forced the taxpayer to cover the more than $half-billion overcharge.
2. What you’re describing is, in part, a retrospective need fallacy. In order to justify a significant expenditure, and keep the cash flowing, the organization leverages its potential alternate uses to its jilted investors. Some of this significant infrastructure is either abandoned or demolished immediately after the games (see: Rio Olympic stadium, Beijing Olympic village, Athens almost all venues), and some operates at a fiscal loss for years following the games (see Vancouver Olympic train line, London natatorium, Montreal Olympic park).
3. True! The benefit of LA hosting the ‘84 games was manufacturing a generation of nationalistic Americans that would support the following 3 decade long middle-eastern invasion of conquest. Greece needed to default on its debt to get installed out of pity in the EU multi-national bailout program. China used their Olympics to threaten the western financial hegemony, then used the failure of the games to oust China’s most popular and most liberal CCP leader.
4. Curious that you listed 5 affluent cities with pre-established world-leading tourism economies out of 6 you cared to name. More curious that you left out the several cities that saw barely any tourism at all (Beijing, Lillehammer, Sochi, Rio, etc.).
@@realistic_delinquent im not here to debate anything except the fact that theres very little to no effect from the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles (a city in the state most hated by Americans and the city spoken about with disgust and contempt by most Americans and a good portion of Californians). I dont think anyone remembered or cared about any possible nationalistic tendencies they "suddenly" picked up because of the Olympic games (that most Americans dont even watch the opening ceremonies of) and have those nationalistic tendencies that "suddenly" appeared last for almost 20 years while thinking back to 1984 Los Angeles the city they likely would avoid ever going to if it wasnt for Disneyland being closer to some then Disneyworld, which is located in a state they semi-joke but are also semi-serious about wanting to see it sink in the ocean, especially when the only thing theyre likely to remember about LA in 2001 USA is not the Olympics that occurred 17 years prior but would be thinking of the LA Riots that occurred 9 years before 2001. That being said im not saying there arent nationalist in the USA, that invading Iraq was something I support, Im not saying anything about any position youre taking except tht LA 1984 Olympics werent even an afterthought nor had any affect on anyones mentality by te time the year 2000 came. That and only that is what Im saying; although I will add numerous polls taken of Angelinos ranging between between 57% to 76% do favor the Olympics coming to Los Angeles in 2028 especially since USC a private university and UCLA a public university as well as their sports facilities and the 9 professional sports teams and their sports facilities, the 16 other major universities/colleges and even a few city colleges with big sports facilities in Los Angeles county and its somewht understandable (along with the fact that Los Angeles is filled with those willing to be sponsors of events or advertise meaning a far easier accesses thats well established which helped makes the games in 1984, just like its making USC and UCLA relevant with NFTs and private funding that will help offset some costs as well. I mean USC alone a private university got people multiple times who never went to the school to invest hundreds of millions into their university, where they had a fundraiser called "Campaign for USC" where their goal was to raise $5 billion in 5 years, they raised that $5 billion in just 4 years and went above their goal raising $6 billion in 5 years plus another billion (totally $7 billion at the end of it all)/ So Los Angeles has enough going for it where if any city has the capability to make a profit from it, itll be Los Angeles. While also true that the IOC does not add into the cost of the event any money spent on infrastructure transportation (meaning every Olympic game budget amount is higher then they admit since cities wont include cost of new roads, trains etc, Los Angeles has been trying to add public transportation for awhile, and many of us in LA are happy to see at least something getting done instead of nothing or seeing projects on timelines where itll be 45 years for some transit projects to finally be completed (since they arent in areas people would use fr the Olympics LA has chosen to go at it at the normal half-century pace). so while cost of new transport projects in LA arent included in what the cost will be, its still projects that are needed, sadly there arent more places that need transit projects done before the olympics since the areas where transit projects for the Olympics are needed just as much as in a lot of areas (side note due to NIMBYs in Los Angeles the one good thing about public transit projects in the area is that they usually avoid the weathy areas where people are less likely to use it and usually focus on areas where people would use it, just not always in the best alignment or possible routes that can be chosen from, but still more flushed out it gets the better its getting and so just for that reason alone i support it. plus with USC, Stanford and UCLA being 3 schools which contribute more athletes to the olympics then most other universities in the USA to both USA and teams for other countries with Stanford at #! and USC at #2 itll be nice to see them play here and not have to travel
LA went wah over budget. The extraordinary level of profit it made stems from the fact that it was the first time that advertising money would come into play at the Olympics.

1. Looking at the pure games profit is a poor way to look at the benefits of the investments. Atlanta’s Olympic Stadium more than paid for itself long after the games, ditto w the improvements made to MARTA. The bigger benefit however was the elevation in Atlanta’s profile. The city has boomed since the games were awarded and several of the city’s leaders cite the games as a catalyst factor. Rio’s original Olympic plan was developed by Barcelona’s team and would’ve seen investment spread across the city along corridors that needed it. Organizers and politicians binned these plans and instead directed investment to properties they had financial stakes in. Typical developing-world corruption. Athens abandoned the original plan too to use temporary and existing venues, going so far as to firing the President of the bid committee. The new plan was an act of hubris; they built permanent venues in an attempt to sway the IOC to permanently bring the games to Athens. Beijing, Sochi, etc. are all examples of the same hubris at play. Even Tokyo fell into this trap.

The overall point I’m making is that LA84, Barcelona ‘92, Atlanta ‘96, Sydney 2000, SLC 2002, Turin 2006, Vancouver 2010, London 2012, Pyeongchang 2018, Paris 2024, etc. Show that there are successful hosting models that do not create longterm issues for host cities. At the end of the day, it’s up to the host city/host nation and organizers on whether or not those models are followed. The IOC does not force cities to build permanent venues, it actively encourages them to use temporary and existing whenever possible. All of the counter cases you list were cases of cities actively rejecting models that had previously worked in favor of hubris, pride, and greed. To tar the entire Olympic Movement or the process of hosting the games with the actions of irresponsible hosts when there are *far more* examples of successful hosts is just nonsensical.

Queenslander's DID NOT want the Olympics, but we now have to suffer with Brisbane 2032. The other country also dropped out. Our hospitals and schools are suffering and could desperately use the money (public health system). And half of our state's population will not see any benefit because we are 1600km (994 miles) away from Brisbane.
They are saying they will use existing stadiums, with minimal upgrades, but we will see. It was kind of funny that the Politician who wanted it appointed herself the head of 2032 games committee before she quit politics. Nice cushy job with none of the backlash when the games come.

The facilities from the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City are all being used, they are not rotting away. There are plans to expand some of those same facilities for the 2034 Olympics.
The London olympics inspired alot of people who had never played sports to get into sports!

The opening and closing ceremonies still amaze me even now, the planning, choreo, design, the image of the chimneys and the rings going up, all the mary poppins flying down to save the day, it was amazing.
The saddest part however was that the building was taken down instead of repurposed.. its now just blocks of flats 😢

Might be interesting and really show that Olympians are the cream of the athletic crop. People today are like “they only got bronze. What good is bronze.” They got 3rd in the world! Seriously! Bronze is fantastic! But people don’t think that way anymore. Maybe a charity event where average people compete against olympians. Show the difference.

I think you should also show in your video what Paris does different than for example Athens. The beach volley arena, Versailles arena etc are all temporary stadiums. Some months after the games there will be empty locations again and no unused stadiums. The swimming arena hosted the Taylor Swift concerts in may 2024 and will be used again for ther events and as a rugby stadium. The athletics stadium Stade de France was built for the 1998 world cup in football/soccer, used for 2016 euro cup etc. The tennis stadiums existed already and are used every year for the french open etc. So I think they really learned from other citys to not have unused venues after the games. 👍

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Utah is the exception to the rule. They actually did turn a profit, from what I understand. I think this was due to using available resources where possible (used University of Utah's football stadium for the opening ceremonies, etc) and maybe because Utah was not as toursity as a place like London or Paris, so it actually did bring in tourists. I would be interested in a further breakdown!
The Olympics in Calgary made money as well. They were reinvested into helping our athletes and left a beautiful legacy.

The Olympics should happen every 2 years. Each sport should hold seperate events prior as preparation so that the countries can make up the costs.
The winter Olympics in Sarajevo 1984. were very expensive for Yugoslavia, but the government did everything to look perfect and modern. After the Olympics, most of the things weren't unfortunately used. In 1992. everything was destroyed after serbs decided to attack Bosnia for going independent from Yugoslavia

Oh, you should have come to the nort-east suburb, we have thoughts on the Olympics ! Over here, "preparing for the olympics" meant a ton of social cleansing, forcefully moving homeless people, destroying a shelter and pressuring people to move out of their homes to build the olympic village, destroying community gardens to build a stupid pool... We feel spat on by the whole thing, like we poor people are a stain to wash off before tourists arrive. When the reason they built the olympic village over here in the first place is because it's the cheapest real estate around Paris.

Hosting the Olympics in Sochi was a WILD idea. Knowing how unprepared the city was + how insane the corruption is....
Years ago I lived in a condo in Colorado that was built for athlete housing for Olympics that never happened. Denver won the Olympics bid and then decided against it for the 1976 Olympics. The complex was called Aspen Shadows, but everyone locally called it Aspen Guettos. It was not really guetto, this was a tourist town in an expensive area. They were really small and poorly built. You could not really fit a full size bed in the bed rooms. The roof blew off on one of the buildings when I lived there during a wind storm. The complex is still there and actually very expensive to own a condo there now because everywhere in that area is expensive. This was in Silverthorne Colorado, it would of been the Winter Olympics.
It seemed like complete opposite when the US hosted in Atlanta in '96...the area actually benefited from it but i think the funding for majority of it was different than how they do it currently. I can see how it could help but at the same time that formula isnt universal
As a person who actually lives in Paris, for sure businesses like hotels and restaurants haven't been profiting from the Olympic games unlike what was usually promised. But what the people in the video forget to talk about is also how bad it was for all the people that may not be in a comfortable financial situation in the first place.
First we have the workers that built all the facilities, a lot of them have been injured or even died in the process.
Then the homeless that were staying in the center of the city where all the office workers, tourists, etc are to get money were all relocated to farther areas outside of Paris so as to "clean" the city off its poverty and look better for the world to see.
In the same fashion, low income families, often with children, as well as students, where massively evicted from their homes to house more policemen for the Olympics. All of them either had to find a new and more expensive apartment in a hurry, or would end up in the streets. Also, students had been complaining for years about cockroach infestations, mold, electricity and water issues in their apartments and no one batted an eye, but when it's the policemen who complain about it, suddenly they made sure to clean everything out.
All of that and many other things happening on top of a VERY difficult time politically with the rise of far-right movements over the country making the people divide between far-right and left activists.
You can check that and other things out easily on the internet, just thought it would be interesting for people to know that on top of what was already said, which is also very accurate that's for sure !

I’ve always loved the Olympics and the 2000 Sydney games were the first ones I really remember as a child. So when I got the chance to visit a few years ago and saw the Olympic Stadium and it was vacant and kind of run down (I won’t say it’s totally abandoned because I’m not sure if they still use it for events) it was honestly pretty sad.
