    Outstanding...thank you sir!!
    Today i got told by every expert under the sun "Nar, nothing can be done..new receivers the only option" came home and tried splicing, some soldering, 10% improvement at best.
    Its late, couldn't let it be, jump on RUclips and watched this video.
    15 mins later and im walking across front lawn in my boxers, fimgers crossed..
    The Rustler's 2.4ghz reciever and it's new custom "minimalist look" 😆 460mm aerial, has full range again.
    Again, thank you Sir, you little ripper

      Joerg Paysen I contacted the good people at Aloft Hobbies and they recommended this...
      " they snap in and have a little rubber like epoxy on them as well. You can just lightly remove the "glue" and pop them off and snap the new ones on"
      I will wait for Bruce's video before I replace mine.

    This vid reminded me...
    A lot of us use ImmersionRC video transmitters and like myself many people have snapped the SMA connector on them as they're very fragile. The pads come off the PCB and there's no way back!
    Lesson learnt I guess... Protect the vtx and use an antenna extension to mount the antenna!
    It would be great to see a tutorial on how to re-use these broken transmitters as it's happened to literally almost everyone I've met flying with them! I will quite happily send you one in return for a good video ;-)

    Hi Bruce, thank you very much for your tie and expertise!!! One question: you showed the calculation for the aerial length. Does it always have to be a "quarter" antenna or can I also do a "half" antenna for example? Sp instead of 31 mm it would be 62 mm long?

    Hi Bruce. As a licensed radio amateur, and having experimented with various antennas for various frequencies over the years, I also found that the best length for the feeder of a 1/4 wave antenna was ANY uneven multiple (except 1), of the quarter wavelength. i.e if 1/4 wavelength = 31mm, then any uneven multiple length of coax that is a multiple of 31mm will be ok. So, NO to 31, YES to: 93 [ which is 31 x 3], 155 [ which is 31 x 5], 217 [ which is 31 x 7] etc. As you also mentioned about velocity factors this feeder length is not absolutely critical, but it's just as easy to get the correct feeder length as not, so why not try? Keep up the great videos.
    Regards Mark in the UK

    Thanks for the great vid. Very useful.
    Two things:
    1) I've finished my 1st miniquad build according to your videos plus a few other resources. The damn thing flies really well! I'm going to post a complete list of what I purchased, where I got everything, and what the total cost was. I'm a complete beginner so it will include everything I bought. I'm really happy with it. But I'd not really call it cheap!
    2) On the topic of miniquads I'm hoping you will do a review of:
    FPV Freerider RC Quadcopter Racing Simulator. Uber cheap and pretty interesting as a simulation for learning to fly racing miniquads. I'm having some issues getting my Turnigy 9x to work correctly with it. Having problems mapping my channels 1 & 2, but I'll work it out eventually. I'd love to hear your impressions of this dirt-cheap piece of software.
    Thanks again for another great video.

      Larry Grimes One more thing...I noticed that this miniquad has no ESCs mounted on the arms. How and why?

    • @laragrimes855
      @laragrimes855 9 лет назад

      Larry Grimes Is there an advantage to adding a wire out to 1/2 wavelength since you already have the cable tie running up rather than cutting back to 1/4? Adding a bit is pretty simple.

    • @xjet
      @xjet 9 лет назад

      Larry Grimes This quad (MXP230) has room between the frame and the power distribution board into which the ESCs will fit so I put them their to minimize the risk of them getting damaged when flying through the dense trees around here.

    • @xjet
      @xjet 9 лет назад +1

      Larry Grimes A 1/4-wave antenna has a different impedance to a 1/2 wave antenna so it would not be a good match to the antenna or the receiver. The result might even be a reduction in range.

      ***** great tutorial Bruce!but what is the little copper tube on the end of some antennas like flysky?

    • @xjet
      @xjet 9 лет назад +3

      Andrew Waters It's a sleeve that provides a counterpoise for the wire of the antenna itself (the bit we exposed). It does improve the radiation pattern of the antenna and can increase range -- but most RC gear has range which is several times the distance at which you can actually see a model so most manufacturers opt to save weight and bulk by not using it.

      @antonip1114 8 лет назад +1

      +RCTV-UK Let me see if I'm right: The length of the antenna WITH the shield doesn't matter. The important length is this slice of antenna WITHOUT the shield protector: 123mm? (or a 1/2: (61,5mm) or a 1/4: (30,7mm)? I'm right?
      Today I cut from the root my antenna from RadioLink R9D 2.4Ghz 9-Ch S.Bus Receiver and now I need to fix it.

    Hey Bruce! In our local flying group we discussed the following question: this is a dipole antenna and you´re manufacturing a 1/2 wavelength antenna here. 1/4 of the wavelength is without isolation and mesh. Am I right if I say that another 31mm (1/4 wavelength) of isolated cable also contribute to the dipole? Thus, 62mm have to stick out of the quad?

I was able to bend it back in place and it seems to be pretty good, but sometimes I still lose signal. Is there a good way to repair one of these or am I looking at buying a new one? • @superdau
    @superdau 9 лет назад +2

    To make it complicated: don't you have to consider the velocity factor of the antenna lead, which will make the optimal antenna length a little bit (5-10%) shorter than a quarter wavelength?

    • @xjet
      @xjet 9 лет назад +2

      superdau The velocity factor applies to the coax itself but not so much to the radiator portion. Also remember we're dealing with a frequency spread of 80MHz here on the 2.4GHz band so it's never going to be an exact 1/4 wavelength of all the frequencies that get transmitted.

    great video. thanks question, my sr210 receiver has no coaxial cover. just a 8.5 cm with a single solder point in the receiver. i need a longer antenna and would like to add one but with no place to solder the ground wire. can the battery ground be used for that? since i got the receiver they have upgraded to a longer antenna. i would like to be able to fix the one i have. any ideas? any help would be appreciated. thank you

    Excellent video Bruce, can you do one on adding this type of antenna to a receiver that has one (or more) short antennas coming off it's circuit board? I have some Orange R615Xs that would be great mini quad receivers if the antennas would clear the frame.

    Great! Still waiting for your hitec radio review. Not much on the web, only some griping about bricked ones. Is the maxima really the bee's knees to say FASST / s-fhss? Is there enough in that radio for a heli flyer to want to convert his flybar heli's over?

    • @xjet
      @xjet 9 лет назад +1

      pataat oorlog The Hitec is certainly one of the lowest-latency systems around (which is a complete about-face from the days of the original Aurora 9 which was probably the highest-latency radio on the market) but in terms of resistance to interference and range, most of the modern 2.4GHz frequency-hobby systems are now pretty much equal.

      Interested to see what you think. Price point seems right. I've heard people allege that support when there is a problem is poor this neck of the woods though. And OMP/Modelflight do not carry them :/ Still

    Great video.
    Does having the opposing antenna a different length affect it at all.
    Eg one side is half the length as the other...

    QUESTION, please: about rx antennas; most tinywoops come with a AIO board. And the rx antenna is just a 26awg cable, with no ground or anything else... How come??? How does it work?? And about Lengh?
    I think Albert Kim tried to put a regular antenna in his mobula6 and put the ground somewhere and the thing got lot lot worse in range ...

  • @rodrigo207

    I read a lot of people here asking about shortening their antennas... Am I correct to assume that I can replace an original antenna for a longer one if I maintain the lengh of the exposed end?
    I bought an IRangeX RM601 that has 3.5cm antennas - it only has the exposed part with no ground on the rx itself. Is there a way of sticking a longer antenna on it?

    Rcmodelreviews hiya Bruce iv broken my flysky IA6 receiver antenna,s will it be a good idea to use RG-316 coaxial wire or must it be replaced with the RG-178 wire Bruce

    Hello. I broke my antennae in half. Can I just solder the inner wires together from both pieces or do I have to start from the end that I have left? Thanks. The end that broke has a thicker end than the antennae wire and so I am leaning towards keeping it. (it's the stock antennae that came with ia6b). Thanks

    On your next video could you explain the large difference in receiver lengths - eg Flysky is 26mm. Also good to show a BODA aerial particularly for the lower range systems and toy radios to increase range by using that cut off coax shielding.

      He answered that question above.

    • @waynerussell6401
      @waynerussell6401 9 лет назад

      Rob Gale Not really - there is a big difference between 33mm FrSky and 26mm FlySky. That is not down to manufacturing tolerances, it is a design decision. Perhaps to do with tuning sensitivity and interference - just like the old GWS FM park receivers having non 1/4 wavelength very short aerials.

    If its only the exposed part of the antenna that matters, can i actually trim the length of both my rx antennas down and do this modification and yet not reducing the signal quality of my receiver?

    How many times can you do that before the whole antenna becomes too short? I realise the end portion`s length is important BUT surly the whole length must be important also?

    bmhi quick question, i just bought a cheap basic remote the dsx, i crashed my plane today and was pretty bumbed out cuz it was my first flight with this new remote control, so i was thinking i bought a defective unit right after my other one had just broke and now im out a airplane too which was even more of a bumber but as i was thinking about what could have went wrong i suddenly remember when the guy at the hobby shop put the bind wire to my reciever he pulled my reciever out which means the attena wire was no longer going to the outside of the plane, and when i went to fly it it was fine untill i got about 200 ft than i lost control of it and it nose dived to the ground and was confetti afterwords, do you think it could have been because of the antenna wire? this almost got me back out of this hobby because i always get defective electronics but in this case im startimg to wonder if it all happend because of the antena wire not being exposed. i did a short range check but was lazy and only walked 75 ft away maybe.

    Would it be useful to cut the antenna to 1/2 wavelength to be able to have it being further away from the Carbon frame and maybee even have more gain?

  • @Ibushi

    I use an old nailcutter instead of the side cutters for small wires. Much more precise since it's got a thin profile and sharp all the way to the edges. I would have used that to cut away the outer braid.

    On Taranis X8r receiver, must the antenna wires be fully extended or just ensure the loaded elements are aligned 90 degree/ 180 degree out of phase?
