The Katipuneros, the local revolutionaries, defeated the Spaniards before declaring independence in 1898. Spain refused to admit defeat to the Filipinos, and it surrendered its colonies, including Guam and Puerto Rico, to the U.S. after losing the Spanish-American War in Central America via the Treaty of Paris. The Spanish were no longer in control of the Philippines when the Americans came to the country by the end of the 19th century. The arrival of Americans triggered the Filipino-American War in 1899.
It turns to a gorgeous dancing fountain with multi-colored lights at night time, blowing water 30 - 50 meters high up into the air. You should see that at night.
Not sure bout the Filipino-Dutch connection there, but the Indonesian flag has a direct connection. When Indonesia was getting rid of the colonials, they tore the blue stripe off the Dutch flag and that’s how the Indonesian flag was created.
