  • I visit the famous elite Filipino university, De La Salle University (DLSU)! The DLSU campus has a beautiful mix of old and modern buildings, and has lots of green grass and trees. The facilities are second to none. The campus is outfitted with museums, libraries, sports complexes, and more, all on its relatively small and cozy campus.

More than 30 years ago, it was the aim of the Alumni Association and the La Salle administration to have 20% of its students as deserving scholars. I do not know if that has been attained. If you think you qualify, you are most welcome to apply. There are also many athlete students who are recruited who are scholars.

Yes, high school grades and results of your entrance exam. Not necessarily top 5% in entrance exam. As long as you are an honor student, good entrance exam result and you qualify to the course you are applying. I know because my brother got scholarship. He was not top 5% but he was an honor student in high school. It also helped that they asked for the Income tax return of my parents. So my brother got scholarship tuition and fees.

Fun fact: My art teacher while I was studying in DLSU told us that the Henry Sy Library building's architecture was inspired by trees where people can find shade and lay down under it, hence the pillars. For few years since it was built, students can actually lay down by the pillars, just like being under a tree but recently the rules have changed and they put benches around the pillars.

About the Japanese massacre at the La Salle chapel during the battle for Manila, one American Christian Brother, a Brother Alfonse, survived. The building with the giant pillars was not yet constructed in the 1990s. That used to be a football pitch where we played football/softball and had our Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) drills. The newest building then was the teeny-tiny Gokongwei Hall. When I left DLSU in 1997, the sports complex building was finally constructed. I haven't been inside the campus since. Thanks for the tour Kell.

During the Taal volcanic explosion De La Salle - Lipa, Batangas through the guidance and leadership of the Christian Brothers opened the DLSL campus to hundreds of homeless and displaced citizens of Batangas in collaboration with the local government. The Taal volcano victims were provided with shelter and fresh new beddings, clothes, 3 meals and free snacks daily, free WiFi, telephone service and medical, rental and psychological assistance. The Volcano refugees were called guests by the Lasallian community and provided entertainment by several performances of the students of DLS-Lipa and there was a huge HDTV that showed several online movies for everyone to watch. The guests were provided with hot and cold showers, free soap and shampoo, toothpaste and brush. Several washing machines and dryers with a huge drying area for clothes were all enjoyed by the Taal volcano disaster guests of DLS-LIPA, Batangas.

DLSU-D has a large museum about the lifestyle of the peninsulares of the Philippines during the Spanish era. It also has a bio-park where you can see rare butterflies. Inside the campus is a lake where you can relax by rowing a canoe. The medical campus of DLSU-D is a designated testing and research center for Covid19.
DLSU-D is scenic enough for TV, movie, commercial ad companies to do on site location shooting in it's eco-friendly Lasallian campus.

Most of the La Salle buildings and it's 16 campuses nationwide were generously donated by several of La Salle's billionaire alumni out of love, loyalty and gratitude for the kind of mentoring the Christian Brothers of De La Salle provide.
Filipino Billionaire Henry Sy of SM was so grateful for the kind of mentoring that his 4 sons got from the Christian Brothers of De La Salle that he generously donated to the construction of the multi-leveled modern library of DLSU.

Now I think you need to go watch an Ateneo vs. La Salle match in the UAAP Women’s Volleyball league, which is currently on going this month up-to next month. An ADMU vs. DLSU match is always jam packed so expect an epic game and crowd. Or go watch the “Battle of Katipunan” volleyball game this weekend which is University of the Philippines vs. Ateneo de Manila. I hope you can! Or just wait till the finals, that’s fine too, coz right now, it’s just the second round of elimination!!!
