I just started using sphagnum moss beginning of 2020 and I just went in blindly 😂😂 I’ve had some fails but eventually got the hang of it. It is one of those things you have to eyeball yourself and use your best judgement to make sure there’s not too much or too little moisture.
OMG. I love you. I have been waiting for someone to use a scale and do this. I have had the hardest time with moss because I usually get it too wet! Thank you so much!!!!?!
I finally bought some sphagnum moss as I’ve heard amazing things, and then learned from Monty Don’s latest book how harmful sphagnum harvesting is to the environment. 🤦♀️ I mention this not to be an eco-troll, but rather to throw out another experiment video idea for you: propagating in sphagnum moss vs eco-friendly alternatives like coconut coir, PitMoss, etc. to see how effective they are by comparison. Keep up these awesome videos, you’re the best!!!
Ill give it a shot, I like perlite as well but i wonder how eco friendly it is. Ive seen some brands tout they are eco friendly when they harvest the moss but its probably lies
I know this is a year after your comment, but I just wanted to include that New Zealand Sphagnum Moss is sustainable. That is the only one that is, I think. It is a little more expensive, but worth it, if it is something you're (anyone) is going to insist on using.
This is so precise and helpful! I’ve been too afraid to dive into spagnum moss before now, but I feel ready to chop off some nodes in the morning and get experimenting after this! Thank you!!
I know it's been a while since you posted this video, but I was wondering if it's advisable to use rooting hormone with this moss propagation method? Also, great video! Thanks for the technical description.
I'd like to add a request to the others -- could you please do a video on different ways to propagate dieffenbachia? Thank you. I've just recently found your videos and find them really informative! Please keep them coming.
Best channel I found for plants so far, thank you!! Random question, but I read somewhere that propagating plants together with Pothos cuttings helps because the Pothos cuttings release growth hormones... Is that true? Does it work?
I'm not set up to measure the weight of water to moss . My take is enough water to for a humid atmosphere in the rooting zone. . I'm just guessing based on your various videos. I will try this technique for hardwood cuttings and air layering
So would you say the take away is; the best ratio for the moss would be for aeration _along_ with watering? Would you compare the feel like almost fully wringing out a kitchen sink sponge? As always thanks for the video!
Yes like the kitchen sponge 🧽 you don’t want it dripping a bunch of water when you lift it in your hand as that can lead to rot on whatever you’re trying to propagate.
@@TechplantChannel Cant wait to see it☺️ Thats unfortunate he didn’t make it though. I had a couple sprout on Christmas and so far so good🤞 my largest seedling is already reacting to touch.
I used this for hoya, along with Harli G's video. worked great b/c she did not go into such detail. BUT, has anyone ever tired adding some rooting agent to the water?
I won't be able to get sphagnum moss for a short while, and I have a monstera plant that keeps rotting in water even with callused ends and cinnamon, so for the time being I'm keeping it in some damp orchid mix to see if it stops the rotting. Can you test rooting in boil-sanitized orchid mix someday? Love your videos!
Which plastic cups are you using? I guess it has holes in the bottom for drainage? I see these cups often and don’t know where to purchase. Is it made for propagation?
I'm so glad you made this video! I recently bought some plant cuttings, and they were given to me in spaghnum moss. I've seen a bunch of your videos where you use it to propagate, but I wasn't exactly sure how the watering works. This is super helpful! Also wanted to ask, is "Orchid Moss" the same thing? I want to propagate some of my other plants in moss and that's the only thing I could find at my local store.
I’m sure I spelt it wrong. And intend to mix both mediums. I also intend to use the moss in several other plants including a mums and poinsettia. Traveling for a month and intend to use the aforementioned and the string irrigation. Wish me luck or advise of any suggestions or inform what you do when traveling.
Any tips for keeping pests out of sphagnum moss, my plants I have in the moss seem to always get infested with soil mites and springtails (I know they are important for decomposition but there are always so many 😅) I use the same brand of sphagnum moss you used in this video
ive just accepted the bug life, there are strong pesticides you could use to treat them if you wanted. but i dont know how safe that is in a bin you will be digging around in.
Hi, I am trying to save my monstera from root rot and it's my first time using sphagnum moss.... I am not sure how compact I should keep the pot with sphagnum moss? Please help!
I received a dead plant in the mail overseas and I’m trying to grow more roots with sphagnum moss. Is it a good idea to enclose the bag to create a ton of humidity?
I feel silly asking this question, but you said peat moss and sand? The video shows a black looking soil mix. I thought peat moss was green? I’m a beginner here and heard moss was good to use, but everyone is showing something that doesn’t look like peat moss found in nature. I’m confused…
No such thing as a silly question and this confusion is common. Peat moss is decomposed, sphagnum moss. If you visit a bog you'll see the green stuff which is sphagnum moss. If you dig you'll see the black brown peat that was once sphagnum moss
oh oh Ive been putting the dry moss into the container, then the plant, and at the end I add the water. So far no problems but today I propagated a few plants, hope it all goes well with this method anyway. Kinda nervous
Hey quick question plant community! I have a beautiful LARGE prop box and have 20+ varieties of cuttings (mostly tropical or subtropical and love humidity) and most have been in there for 4-6 weeks and little to no issues. They reciee 10-12 hours of light from a full spectrum grow light (attached to the lid via velcro). However, the tips seem to get "soggy" and brown/black in the last few days? Unsure why I spray it when it gets dry-looking and I also treat the whole box with Neem oil once a week. I get some mold sometimes. Any help on what's happening? Is it leaf rot? Does it need to air out more than once a day for at least an hour? I love the box and it will be my primary source of propagating.
@techplantchannel any ideas for Woollum90? I'm curious about using neem in a propagation box. I've never seen anyone recommend doing this. Would that be to prevent mold? I have heard neem can burn leaves, especially when exposed to light when wet, so maybe that is causing the soggy brown/black tips? I'm a newbie, so I'm curious to see what others have to say.
Hi, I know there are many requests from different people on video showcases. But could you try a no dormancy period experiment on sarracenias or venus flytrap? (just constant room temperature). I only hear people talking about CP dying without dormancy period but I never experience that in the tropics of Malaysia nor have I seen one person actually showing the effects. Thanks!
Dude, you got great content with so much technical explanation. Your channel is called TECH-PLANT but when it comes to technical names of plants, you say yada-yada-yada. You gotto put more effort to be technical.
Hi, would you be willing do a Pothos propagation with different types of water? Distilled, spring, reverse osmosis, tap? I’ve noticed growth on pothos roots after using spring water when nothing else was working... I don’t think I’m just insane 🥴
Sphagnum moss shouldn't be sold - learn to grow your own. When alive it's a fast growing plant, it's a more powerful carbon absorber than most plants and we really really need to conserve this wonderful plant. Please think twice before buying it...
What a scientific way of showing and explaining something we can’t feel, great job!

if you are worried about over wetting your moss, then put some holes in the bottom it will help reduce water build up

it needs a few minutes to properly re wet since its so dry. I squish it around in the water for a bit to help it soak up
