US is the land of opportunities -- but only after you get the green card. In H1B, you are just an above average paid worker who is not allowed to earn money from anywhere other than your sponsor's salary ( & sponsors will pay you less than what they pay the GC and citizens because they know you are dependent on their sponsorship). H1B extension is at the mercy of USCIS's whims and fancies dependent on the policies of the political party that rules the US at that time. For example, during India's friend 'Dolan' Trumbs period, lot of genuine H1B extensions were denied and many Indians had to return to India ( If you are a resident Indian laughing at this, WAIT -- for every NRI who returns to India with overseas global job experience, another resident Indian looses a job opportunity in India -- and that resident Indian could be you !). Unless you come in H1B as a manager with international management experience or in L1 visas, the green card wait time is 10-15 years if not more.. and in those years you are constantly living in the fear of next extension getting denied, students education getting broken midway, struggling to find visa stamping dates etc. A part of your paycheck goes to fill the social security benefits for US citizens. So if you never become one, its basically you paying for the retirement of US citizens. H1B is a sacrifice of peace of mind for quality of life and money ! Being an h1b myself for over 9 years in US, my advice to anyone (especially students) who want to migrate and ultimately work freely in the US and want to traverse the easiest path -- get a Canada work /student visa instead. Much more easier. During your first year at work you can apply for PR. I think 3 years into PR you can apply for citizenship. Once you are a Canadian citizen, you can work freely in US onT visas which are loose and not restrictive as H1bs. If you still want to be a permanent resident in US, your employer can apply GC. You go through the ling wait time anyway but you have the back up option always to go back to Canada and denials on T visas are very rare.
100% true! But Canada might not be an easy path , but just a path with a backup in which you won’t end up in returning to India. Though there are more optimistic ways like EB1 category processes, T or H1 still require sponsorship. And to get GC thorough T / Canada citizenship, it would circle back to country based quote which is completely based on individual’s birth place , not nationality (say a person born in India and with a Canada citizenship, would have to wait similar to a person in H1 waits). If US is the destination country with a dream or US - GC/Citizenship , obviously H1 would be tough but right choice. But if you just want get the flavor or working in US without getting GC/Citizenship , Canada path would be a sure shot hit (after Citizenship).
TN visa’s can not have dual intent, ie to apply green card, you need to be in either H-1B or L1. same case for E-3 visa as well (for Australian Citizens). It may be possible to apply for green card from outside USA, but not while working in US on a TN visa
The current annual statutory cap is 65,000 visas, with 20,000 additional visas for foreign professionals who graduate with a master’s degree or doctorate from a U.S. institution of higher learning. This quota is for all the countries, its not like 65k per country.
