My experience was different than described...my male was extremely obedient, loyal, loving - very sensitive to me and excellent around strangers but never allowing them to touch. His behavior was a personality of sorts. I miss him. ❤

However my male was very protective of me and didn't like strange guys around me but was fine with neighbor boys. One guy came to take me out on a date but he just got out of the car and my male shepherd tore his leather jacket. No date that night! Out of all the Pets l owned, my male shepherd was always the one I loved the most! That was in 1969 and he wouldn't let my fiance near me. I got married and moved to Michigan. I couldn't take him with me. I cried my eyes out having to leave him. To this day I still miss and love him so much. He was my best friend,😭

I have my 5 th German Shepherd female pup. She is 10 weeks old. Already she has bonded with me because i have been feeding her boiled chicken giblets and liver AS TREATS. MY KIDS NAMED HER 'Hazel'. For some unknown reason I keep thinking she is named 'Gladys'. Ha! I have always fed my GSD's Royal Canin Dog Food. They love it and eat less compared to other kibble. On day 2 we let her sniff the 2 cats and 2 Lhasa Apsos. No problem as they all get along. I love your site. Very thorough and full of all kinds of helpful info. My parents had a female Shep. when I was born. She died when I was very young. I remember that she was very gentle. When I was 8, we got another female, who was very protective of us. As a young adult I got my own beautiful female shep. She was very obedient, and we could communicate telepathically
We adopted a female German shepherd from our local SPCA when she was about three. She had been used for the puppies she'd had and then relinquished. She was a wonderful dog - very patient with our young grandchildren. She was almost 16 when we had to put her down due to issues with her hind legs.
We have one of each. I agree on the diffrences of the genders. Our girl is 7,5 yo and very calm and sweet. The boy is 6,5 yo and also very sweet, acting the guard of the property, and playing like he is a 6 months puppy🙂
Im very happy with my female GS. Shes very attached, lazy and calm. Understands what i want from her very easily. Eats as much or less as my 4 cats. I let her do anything she want in the city. Never goes too far from me.
I have a big male German Shepherd and he's extremely protective over me and even more so my wife and grandchildren. He is a very loving boy with the family but does NOT take easily to strangers. The best part about him is that he seems to be a great judge of character, he just seems to know those who have ill intent!!!
I have always had GSD’s, in fact one of my earliest memories is learning to walk alongside my parents long haired GSD Brigg. He would push me up with his nose and I would toddle alongside him holding onto his fur. I wouldn’t have any other breed. My current GSD is 12 and he likes his activities - walks are a bit slower and shorter now but you sure are on the receiving end of one of the looks if I don’t adhere to his routine!
I have a large male German Shepherd Dog and I definitely agree that he must have daily physical and mental exercise. He is a much happier boy when he gets his activities in. I have been very blessed with my baby boy, he has NEVER chewed things up or been destructive in anyway. I just have to be careful when new people come around, he doesn't take to stranger's coming to the house very easily. He doesn't bother anyone when they are out in public, he's just funny about the house and car!!!

My wife and I bought a pair from a trusted breeder that breeds champion Shepherds with pedigrees and AKC papers. Both our Sheps are AKC certified. The male is about 2 and can be very aggressive and territorial, but is quite affectionate with my wife and I. His favorite spot is on my lap and he can get a bit frustrated when I don't let him on my lap (especially while I'm eating). The female is a bit smaller than the male, but she is so full of energy and love. She can be a bit devious at times, but she's a good girl. She can be a bit timid & shy around people, but she isn't as aggressive and can warm up to people better. We picked out some great names for them. The 2 year old male is Maverick (from Top Gun) and the "Soon to be" 1 year old female is named Sansa (from Game of Thrones).
We have a female DDR and she weighs 83 pounds. She is very gentle with our grand children,but she is very protective of them. When someone comes to the house she gets between the kids snd them. Comet is a house dog and is very housebroken and does not get on the furniture. Intruder beware, because you will have to deal with her before harming my family. Best dog we have ever owned.
My boy German shepherd is calm but don’t get him twisted he protects when strangers try to get close to our baby daughter and my girl German Shepered she’s to protective you can be 20 feet away and she already barking and trawling ready to attacks she’s sweet with the kids and our baby daughter there both good boy and girl I love them
I have just bought 2 male GSDs at 8 weeks. I love them but they are some work. I work from home and I walk them out of there crib for 5-10 mins every 2 to 3 hours. I also walk them early in the morning and when I finish work. Is this a good schedule for them? And also I want my GSDs to grow to one obidient to our family members but be aggressive against strangers as I leave in a community with lots of theft etc. I want to control this though(like a relative comes and my dogs behave if I command them). How do I train my dogs for this?
You can train them to respond to specific commands which you can use when a relatives comes around to let them know it’s safe. I’d suggest you watch some obedience training videos, or if you can get a professional trainer.
I have 4 GSD they can get even bigger like 125+# for male and 85#+ for females. But can't get a better dog. And yes VERY!!! protective. I trip and fell my older male reacted when mine son came to help me up. They don't play when it comes to their masters

It has long been proven that neutering is not a solution for aggression. I've had two males in my life over 26 years, and I would not neuter either one. They were my angels. Stop this nonsense about castrating males.
I have a male 9 1/2 yr. Old German Shepherd. I can't tell you how many times I've been told I need to neuter him, that's not the way to treat aggression as you know.Not only that, early spaying and neutering has been proven to cause several different cancers. In the UK, few people desex their dogs, yet they don't have the homeless pet population that America does.
I don’t agree with several conclusions. However all my 6 GSDs have been from German lines, who are trained more overt protection, search and rescue and agility. They are tested for health issue such as hip dysplasia. German dogs have to have certified hips. I have had 3 females and 3 males. The best predictor of behavior was the training and behavior of the biological parents. As I buy German dogs they are more naturally oriented to protection and use of their noses to identify the character of humans. I do socialize them immediately to children, friends, contractors and the police. I like having 2 dogs at a time, so I get one of each sex. I don’t breed them. Their job is to love and protect me, my property and my family. Their love and devotion is deep. As a was more active with my dogs, they obeyed me more than my husband. It wasn’t because they viewed me as the parent, they viewed me as the leader. I have 25 years of owning these German GSDs. My love for them is very deep. But they follow me because I am the leader. However, as family visits more often they become more affectionate with family, and people I hire to work. I don’t ever leave them alone with a contractor or worker. When I am out of my home, their job is to protect the home. I have had all my dogs get rid of potential burglars. They never fail. When I come home they are full of love for me. They love me more than my family. They never say no to me. Occasionally they will find a personal,object, like a slipper, and rip it to shreds. A GSD takes time and devotion. But as their leader, I am paid back in spades. Plus if have been saved from burglars and on one occasion, 2 rapists. I train using professionals for a few months, have studied a lot, and use positive reinforcement. For me, praise works better than treats. Best thing I do is say Thankyou Charlie, you are such a good boy. Add pets to that praise, and I can take them anywhere. My dogs enjoy both hardware stores and art galleries. lol. They are smarter than most humans. 😂

I knew a couple who had to put their German Shephard in a closed room because it would viciously attack anyone outside of the family. It barked and growled insanely the entire time I was there. I love dogs, but that one was a brute. I remember the man smirking at me. Horrible memory.
this dog as all dogs if got as a puppy is as active as it's master and is as violent or loving as it is exposed too...this goes for all animals......we are all products of our envirement and dogs are NO Different....my female was pure and was 30 inches at the shoulder, passed at 12yrs..had to keep her ears clean and care for her coat, watch for tics and fea's and anything that did not belong...my males were all smaller but had the same issues...brush 2 times a day and still they shed...never had a problem with their coats...brought them up to love, never had an issue....my females without any special training were extremely protective of my children when my children were small....when the kids were playing in the yard in their play pens they were less than 1 yr old my female would make her presence well known when people passed by or came to close to their play pen if they were strangers

My female will jump over a fence. Her athleticism is truly incredible. She maybe smaller but trust me she will get the job done

I have never seen a 65# full grown GSD- male or female. Expect 85#+ female and 95#+ male

My female GSD is only 22 in 23in, 50+ lbs healthy
