  • The BMW G81 M3 Wagon turned a lot of heads when it first came out and even broke a lot of hearts when it wasn't available in the United States.
    In this video, I get to see the First G81 M3 Wagon in the United States from dAHLer. We also see what happened 24 hours before the Kies Auto Show 2023.

    M3 touring meets all the legal standards for US but Bmw are not interested bringing it here. Sad 😞

      My guess is that if you want to make it road legal, you would need to hire a bunch of engineers to design modifications to the cars, to make them meet crash tests and other standards. Then buy a bunch of copies, apply your modifications and hand them over for crash testing. If successful then congratulations you can keep your car.

    M3 Touring looks amazing, but it would not sell well in the U.S. so its a business decision in the end. Its got all the hype right now, but if it was actually for sale in the U.S. you wouldn't see many buy it over an X3M or M3 sedan. This is the reason fastbacks do well in the U.S. you get the sedan and the hatchback trunk without it being a station wagon. America is all about SUV's/Sedans and the hype around the touring in the U.S. is mostly because of rarity.

      That's just not true. The US buyers don't bite on "normal" spec wagons (Volvo V90, MB E class non AMG, VW Jetta variants, Jaguars, Buicks, etc). Because of this, money was never invested by BMW to certify the wagon variant of the G20 here in the states. To certify it retroactively just for the G81 would've been cost prohibitive for both BMW and potential customers. Again, this is not to say that the decision to cut the touring from the US was a bad idea. As successful as the G8X platforms have been, they still are a fraction of sales compared to non-M 3 and 4 series. And the data clearly showed we weren't willing to buy enough touring variants of the normal cars to justify the certifications. However; Audi proved with the success of the RS6 that US customers will absolutely buy a high end, performance wagon. While the G81 would not have been cheap, it would've undercut the RS6 and the E63 AMG wagon. Additionally, the coming M5 touring is further evidence of the business case in the US for high performance wagons. I also have a deposit on one already.

    • @CarsWithKeav
      @CarsWithKeav Год назад +1

      @@brandonchism6960 I wouldn't think the G81 is in the same category as the E63 and RS6. M5 touring is much more in that category because high performance V8 and the sounds. In the U.S. I think the M5 touring would do better selling versus the M3 touring. I think that is why BMW didn't bring both. I personally still don't think the G81 would do well. Not saying nobody would buy it, but it has to be enough to make sense and you don't want to cannibalize an already small market by having two performance wagons in the U.S. Just my opinion.

    • @brandonchism6960
      @brandonchism6960 Год назад +2

      @@CarsWithKeav we agree there. They aren’t in the same category. However, it repeatedly outperformed the RS6 in comparison tests while costing less. And compared to the last BMW wagon variants we received, it’s much larger. That aspect aside, the RS6 for many of us was supposed to be THE high performance wagon. It ended up being a A6 wagon with a v8. But the G81 is a proven M3 with a big ass and luggage capacity, lol. Doing shows like Invasion and various bimmer link ups, the overall success of the G8X platform is a missed opportunity for the touring in the US. For the first time, an M car was released in the states during a time where nearly every car was a customer ordered allocation versus a dealer offering. Couple that with the volume of dealers campaigning to BMW that guys like me were willing to trade out of a previously purchased G8X for a touring variant means loss of repeat sales from confirmed buyers. I’m not saying it would outperform X3M. I’m saying the enough of them would’ve moved that bringing the much more expensive M5 touring next year would have a stronger business case based on the sales numbers of the G81.

      @TheWeavingBagel Год назад

      1. It wasn't initially designed with the us market in mind and thus was not designed to meet us safety standards. Modifying the design proved to be too costly of an endeavor for BMW when they looked into it.
      2. Do you not like the grill design or do you not like the station wagon body style?

      @@TheWeavingBagel So say hypothetically, somehow you managed to get one in the US, would it be impossible to get like an official registration? or is it that ur getting pull over instantly?? or is it a matter of time that they’ll know u have one n if they do catch you with it what would be the consequences

    • @TheWeavingBagel
      @TheWeavingBagel 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@akaswimmin 99% that you won't be able to register it because the frame/vehlicle body won't be in their "database" of vehicles that you can register. Yes you could bring one over here but if you drive it you run the risk of being caught and the vehicle destroyed by the authorities.
      Also even though you didn't ask this it's worth mentioning that Swiss tuner dahler managed to bring one up for standards and sold one in the US.
