Just to put this in context, it's the entrance hymn from Vespers, sung after the conclusion of the main set of thematic hymns for the day ("Lord I have cried unto thee"; that is, a set of verses structured around selections from Psalms 141, 130, and 117.)

O Gladsome Light is sung every Saturday evening at Vespers in the Orthodox Church. There may be different melodies but the words are the same everywhere in the world.

Valaam is a Monastery in Russia. There are many Russian Orthodox Chants (typically sung in Church Slavonic, not Russian) that originate from this Monastery... or are in the style of the chants sung by the Monks at Valaam.

Russia is is famous for their menschoirs, been there seen it life. Especially there Basses are fabulous. Amd whats interresting, many of them cant read notes, sing everything by ear. Almost just as as good, are the chinese Munks. Fortunatly i also had the opportunity to see them life in China.

    Translation:
O Gladsome Light of the holy glory of the immortal, heavenly, holy, blessed Father,
O Jesus Christ: Having come to the setting of the sun,
having beheld the evening light, we praise the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit: God.
Meet it is for Thee at all times to be praised with reverent voices, O Son of God, Giver of life. Wherefore, the world doth glorify Thee
There's an English version on RUclips also.

Is the liturgy done in St. Basil's Cathedral anymore? Or have they stopped after the end of the Tsar?

    • @pikppa

The services were stopped for a while but then Stalin revived the Orthodox Church and the practice begun again. Of course there are services today now that Russia is once again an official Orthodox country. There are 8 churches inside the Kremlin. All actives.

Saint Basil the Fool for Christ. "If any of you thinks he is wise in this age, he should become a fool, so that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight." 1 Corinthians 3:19

@g8tor03 That translation is so off as to be basically wrong. Someone tried to make English poetry out of it, but you can't do that without mangling the sense. No Orthodox bishop I know would ever approve such a travesty of a translation in any of his parishes.
Someone who wants to know what they're singing can Google "Phos Hilarion".
