Yes you do... I have been able to grow all year round through the last 4 winters. Nothing like fresh February vegetables.

I completely agree. I'm in northern Colorado, and in my cold frame I have snap peas and cilantro at the moment. I put them in at the start of March, which is WAY too early for in-ground plants in this area. It was 19F just a few days ago and we've gotten two major, wet snow storms since I planted (18 inches and 10 inches, respectively). The plants are doing great. My only complaint is that I have to remember to crack open the lid mid-morning so it doesn't get too hot in our Colorado sunshine, and then close it back up in the evening. If I forget just once, I could kill of everything from overheating or freezing. But so far, I've remembered. Side note: the 19F night worried me, so I dumped a bunch of leftover fall leaves on top over everything to provide a little extra insulation. Everything came through, so the leaves either helped, or were not actually needed - I'm betting they helped.

The leaves were probably a good idea with peas and cilantro. with other plants like spinach, kale or even lettuce it would have been over kill.

I have a couple of old 2x4 windows and some pallets. What’s the best way to use them to build a cold frame?

Just build a box that fits your beds and can also use those windows as lids. The wood from the pallets won't last too long because it is so thin, but the windows should work great.
