NEVER sign a contract without viewing the place at least once or at the very least go for somewhere that has been approved by your university. Here in the UK many universities have their own letting agencies or online portals with verified landlords and letting agents - if a landlord doesn't take care of their properties or tenants they can get struck off the list. You can also check the Land Registry to see who owns the property and Company's House to see who owns the letting agency or the company running a building (also shows you dates and other companies they own or have owned previously).

As someone who lives in NJ, that price for an apartment over in Northern Jersey is a bit too low. Therefore it is considered something as “too good to be true”. Please be careful out there everyone. People will take advantage of others in desperate times like now!
My GF and I were looking at houses and came across a number of scams like this. A number of reposts with phone numbers changed. One guy met us and acted like he forgot the keys when out of nowhere the real owners showed up. We tried to get the police involved, but they didn't show up after an hour and a half, and unlike TV you can't hold a person for them.
• 0:48 - When they say stuff like "do you want more info pls??", that's a pretty big tip-off that they're a scammer, that's exactly how scammers talk _all the time_ . ¬_¬ • 3:36 - He's counting the bathroom as a separate room? 🤨
They don't always call so how would you know that the ad pic doesn't match the person's voice? When you meet they could say they are co partner of the business. It's easy to see how people fall for it; they said their a landlord and if they have keys what are you not going too believe?

I work in real estate and property management and this happens ALL the time. Legitimate listings get copied from somewhere like Zillow and pasted elsewhere with a lower price and completely different contact info. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve been called by someone who was confused to see our listing for the place they’ve been emailing another person about it. NEVER pay anything for a property you haven’t walked through. Also, a major vacation rental problem. We have several which we only offer through protected sites like VRBO and Airbnb. Twice, during the extreme busy season, we’ve had families show up at our houses who thought they’d booked them by sending money to some yahoo on Craigslist, only to find the house already occupied by our guests. Now they’re out of the money they saved for a vacation and they’re stuck with nowhere to stay in fully booked town! Just awful.
Mad love for *ASTRATRUSTHQ's* AWESOME "no nonsense" attitude! ✊ I work in customer service and I would literally hire her as my boss and pay her 10x the normal salary. She is absolutely amazing 🙏 Please accept my heartfelt gratitude. I look forward to another 10 years! 😊
@@evelinholmes6401 I have known a few definitely honest Nigerians living in the US, and met several of them. Those people I have known seemed bright and hard working. The problem in places like Nigeria is probably more the lack of opportunity. Desperate situations make people do all kinds of questionable things - look at the situation in Somalia for instance with warlords and piracy.
I came across something similar almost two years ago. Found a house that was supposedly for rent at an almost unbelievable price. I became quickly suspicious of the awfully cheap price, the address was not listed correctly, and there was actually a “FOR SALE” sign in the yard of that house. In the email it said he was “out of town” and to go peek in the windows as he wouldn’t be around to let us in with keys and that if we liked it we could sign the paperwork and send him/her the money. I quickly realized it was a scam, reported the listing immediately, and then contacted the true owners for the property to let them know someone was trying to use their listing to scam people.
Yup, same thing happened to me. I told the realtor...after researching on my own that the house was too good to be true. Kept making excuses to delay meeting up, e-mailed me fake paperwork, etc. When I called them out, they threatened to kill me. I did file a police report and forwarded everything to the police, but of course nothing ever came of it.
@@brendabilotti1912 thats because the police dont actually do anything that requires more than driving a few blocks and beating people to a pulp and most of those times they even take hours upon hours to get there they dont hunt for scammers they dont hunt for pedophiles they dont take action in anything that truly desperately requires it
@@brendabilotti1912 Oh, my god. I'll bet you were really scared. I been following some of the scambaiters and a few of these evil scammers use threats of death, calling the police, or taking all of the money in a bank account. The true scum on earth and internet.
Same thing happened to me, thankfully I didn't pay them any money. We went to go visit the property, saw it was for sale and someone else who didn't own the property was trying to list it as a rental.
I respond to every scam call I can... I know I win when they realize they wasted their time and get combative. Ive made it to second level three times with warranty scams. Obviously I need to up my game. You are a hero.
One of my son's was scammed out of almost all he had to move into an apartment a few years ago. He was so ashamed he didn't reach out to tell me he needed money to live on. It completely broke my heart.
This is an old scam, too. "Hey, we're on vacation and can't show you the house/apartment. Just send us the $2,000 and we'll mail you the keys. Trust us!" **WINK**
The thing is people can be so desperate that they would just jump into this without even thinking. That’s how scammers make so much money. Kinda how tech scammers get away with making so much off of the elderly or non tech savvy people.
Me and my buddies almost went through a similar scam, but we didn't wanna go with the blatant risk of not getting the keys, plus the place still looked lived in.

Unfortunately, we ran into a ton of these types of scammers when moving to San Francisco for school earlier this year. It's a total minefield, thanks for making people more aware of these types of scammers.
I believe it, rents are crazy here in the Bay Area and there's a lot of assholes who will try and take advantage of the market.
Wow is that true! Protect yourselves! No one else will! Do not send money to anyone who wants you to do a bank transfer! Do not send gift cards...EVER!
This was pleasant to watch.
Most people ignore these. Most people hang up when they get a suspicious call.
It's very awesome when you know how to call out the scammer and scare them away.
I swear, somebody has to get this man a detective show😂

How the scammer thought anyone will fall for this and how people actually fall for this is beyond me.
Believe it or not; some people have.
They don't always call so how would you know that the ad pic doesn't match the person's voice? When you meet they could say they are co partner of the business. It's easy to see how people fall for it; they said their a landlord and if they have keys what are you not going too believe?
@@rebekahfield4083 Well the man can't even spell in English so thats the first red flag. Second is the low price, third is the fact that someone else owns the place, fourth is the price change on the contract. With the second low flag I would stop talking to the guy

Just awful.

@@evelinholmes6401 You should watch his video about the photo contest he held for Nigerians. There ate many good ones you will see in that video.
For Sale By Owner has been used by people house-sitting to get a deposit on the house, but it's not for sale.

The thing is people can be so desperate that they would just jump into this without even thinking. That’s how scammers make so much money. Kinda how tech scammers get away with making so much off of the elderly or non tech savvy people.
