Originally it was a lightning bolt sticker designed by Owsley Stanley to be used to mark the Grateful Dead's gear. The skull was added later and by 1976 it had its current form.

Mickey was the one that opposed his father. The lyrics "You know better but I know him" and "Steal your face right off your head" were things Hart told Garcia when they were going to turn the books over to him. Mickey grew up with his mother and didn't know his father until he showed up after reading his son was in a band. Mickey and both his parents were experts in military style drumming.

Yeah.... he played the first night of the Capitol Theater run starting 02/18/71, a show that premiered many new songs, all of which became standards for the band till the very end. The piano player is Ned Lagin that night. Mickey's last show till 10/20/74.
Yeah that was a real rough time for Mickey. He had been wanting to reconnect with his father for years. His dad was famous drum corp drummer. Mickey only wanted Lenny's approval. It literally broke him in two.

Like so many Dead tunes, this song transcends its original inspiration and has evolved over time to hold different meanings for fans and the band. Of all the folks out there "discovering" the Dead and introducing new fans, you really pick some of the deepest tracks. Thanks again, you made my night.
I am sure more than one deadhead was experiencing ego death at this point of the show and then they play "He's Gone" must have been very poignant. At that point there is nothing left to do but SMILE, SMILE, SMILE
Also, PigPen died right around the same time... some related it to him. He lived fast & hard... "9 mile skid on a 10 mile ride"... wasn't a long ride but he was truckin' so hard he had to brake early. RIP PigPen
It was indeed going into another song- Eyes of the World- then into drums/space. 2nd sets were often virtually seamless, with each song flowing right into the next. The Dead were well experienced enough to know to keep the ball rolling at this point in the trip!

I remember Oakland 93. This giant biker dude would not respect my blanket. Kept ignoring me all night. Then he saw me write down the song. He asks what song is that. I said lazy river road. He nicely moved off my blanket with a smile on his face.

The Grateful Dead are the most Iconic and unique American rock band.....their humility and longevity is timeless....brilliant lyrics, sublime melodies, with just the right amount of 'let's wing it and see what happens", and always wrapped in oodles of authenticity. Greatest LIVE performances....journeys really.....most wonderful part of this Long Strange Trip ....could not be more grateful for the Dead.

As for Jerry wearing the "same outfit" it became pretty much standard. The dude must have had 200 black, short sleeve t shirts! One good thing about checking off a "reaction song" is that now you can go listen to as many other versions as you want! And there are many great ones! As a working musician, ( who's played in Dead cover bands ) I can personally testify that it's actually harder to play slowly, it requires far more discipline. Plus, any mistakes one might make, stand out all the more starkly. Mad props to Jerry...💜🎶✌
There is slow, and then there is Jerry slow. Complex, deep and haunting. Some of my favorites: China Doll, Stella Blue, He's Gone, as geez there's too many. Summer '89 was just too good as well. Such thick and polished sound.

My Deadhead friends were like “Watch that SPEED there, Casey Jones. I’m so thankful for people who recognized I was self destructing back then and had the patience to give me space to slow down and breathe a bit, plus the psychedelics saved my life from ruminating over past trauma. I agree with that song. Jamal will love Jerry double live from 91. Has all of that. I saw the Sunday Gospel Revival at Del Fest and Dre Anders and many many guests on stage Kentucky thunder , Gibson Bros , Traveling McCourys , Del, , and everyone else singing eventually got on stage and sang My Brothers and Sisters”it was beautiful. Definitely inspirational and healing happy. I don’t think he’s ready for Don’t Let go yet. But getting there. The frustrating thing about this is Jamal not letting the show just play .. sounds like Spoonful or nobody fault but mine or TOO

Grateful Dead changed my life in 1982 when I saw them for the first time. Toured with them until 1995 when the end of the road came. I’m definitely blessed to have seen Jerry live thank you God 🙏❤️👽🎶🎶🎶
Yup, I was there! ‘89-‘92 Jerry was on fire!🎸💥 So many great Foxboro memories- The Dead 3 times, once w Dylan, Pink Floyd, The Who. Worst stadium seats ever, but what a great venue anyway. Adam Vinatieri closed it with style!
I've never head this version of He's Gone before and it's immediately become my favorite version so far. Brent and Bobby at the end with the backup vocals were so great!

The great thing about Robert Hunter is that he intended a lot of his lyrics to be open to interpretation, and have different meanings for different people. So what you said at the end is good, Listen and find your own meaning,

100% I had a great moment on a sunny hot summer day getting back from a long bike ride climbing the last hill and I just completely clicked with that song in a way I can't describe. I love that Europe 72 album.
Nothing left to do, but smile, smile, smile. Whatcha gonna do. The Dead for all their success never were driven by money. In fact they were very generous. I suggest Jamel, watching the Amazon Prime docu-series, Long Strange Trip. It will help in understanding the different songs and the context, as they would sing about what was happening in their lives. Couple that with all the LSD experimentation and you have some very interesting stories but to song. Life lessons get passed on. Like I have said in the comments in the past....in many ways it was like Church. And sometimes it felt like they were singing directly to you. It gets kinda deep. Appreciate your keeping the music alive and hopefully expanding the fanbase. Peace. Try listening to Bjork, a couple song suggestions: Cocoon, Joga, undo, declare independence, earth intruders....you’ll be glad ya did. Very experimental trip hop, avant-garde, electronic craziness. Jamel, Lenny was Mickey's (one of the drummers) dad. Mickey left the band for a few years after this happened, but ended up coming back in 1974? It was obviously a painful thing that happened, and awesome when Mickey was brought back, because he was part of the band and it wasn't his fault.
One of the official Grateful Dead symbols is Steal Your Face, the lightning bolt skull which was the cover art of the album by the same name. The one on your hat is called the Space Your Face. I met the guy who designed that sometime in 89 or 90 in either Nassau or Albany (Knickerbocker Arena). He got busted selling that on t-shirts at shows for copyright infringement and then Jerry saw the shirts, had the charges dropped and pulled him out of jail and bought the image from him for the wonderful price of tickets for life.
A few thoughts. First, note that "nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile" is probably the most iconic Dead lyric. Garcia was noted for making eye contact and smiling with people near the stage, and this line always brought a huge round of applause. Second, it is a Robert Hunter song. I didn't literally interpret it the way you did, but the thing to note is this: You're not quite sure exactly what he is talking about, but you know exactly what he means. Third, and this is a major LOL moment - when they start the vocal jam, and you, Jamal, say "do it one more time." All the Dead Heads are laughing, because they know the are going to do not just one more time, but for 3 or 4 minutes. Keep up the good work. You want a reaction, listen to the original Live/Dead recording of St. Stephen - the opening guitar work ....!!!! I remember the first time I heard this - play it loud - you will have a REACTION!

John K was excellent-- I used to follow his old band, Hairball Willie about 30 years ago--- grate originals, and their Dead covers were fantastic. John would play US Blues with an electric fiddle with a wah pedal, it was awesome!!
I’m a 46 yr old deadhead.. saw them play about 25 times in my teens and early 20s. That was so much fun to watch someone listen to this for the first time. I just lost a very close mentor and friend on February 26th. I remember before heading to bootcamp I shared this song the day I had to leave. I'm 3 weeks from going home and he passed away so this song is getting me through this grieving period. The grateful dead is truly a band to get you through the tough times
Regarding the fate of Lenny Hart, he was located by a private detective and arrested in San Diego on July 26, 1971, while baptizing people and using the name "Rev. Lenny B. Hart". He was convicted of criminal embezzlement and sentenced to six months in jail. Lenny Hart died of natural causes on February 2, 1975. He had been teaching music in Mill Valley since his release from prison. According to Dennis McNally, "Mickey went to the funeral home, cleared the room, took out the snakewood sticks that had been his inheritance, played a traditional rudimental drum piece, "The Downfall of Paris" on Lenny's coffin, and split."

Like so many Dead tunes, this song transcends its original inspiration and has evolved over time to hold different meanings for fans and the band. Of all the folks out there "discovering" the Dead and introducing new fans, you really pick some of the deepest tracks. Thanks again, you made my night.

It was indeed going into another song- Eyes of the World- then into drums/space. 2nd sets were often virtually seamless, with each song flowing right into the next. The Dead were well experienced enough to know to keep the ball rolling at this point in the trip!

I remember Oakland 93. This giant biker dude would not respect my blanket. Kept ignoring me all night. Then he saw me write down the song. He asks what song is that. I said lazy river road. He nicely moved off my blanket with a smile on his face.

You're family now, for sure, you know some of our dirty laundry!! :) Two iconic phrases in this song that endure in Dead lore to this day, "Steal Your Face" (that's a "Stealie" on your hat) and "Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile!". As for Jerry wearing the "same outfit" it became pretty much standard. The dude must have had 200 black, short sleeve t shirts! One good thing about checking off a "reaction song" is that now you can go listen to as many other versions as you want! And there are many great ones! There are few guitarists who are willing to play as slowly as Jerry. Slow Jerry may be an acquired taste, but it's certainly worth acquiring.
As a working musician, ( who's played in Dead cover bands ) I can personally testify that it's actually harder to play slowly, it requires far more discipline. Plus, any mistakes one might make, stand out all the more starkly. Mad props to Jerry...💜🎶✌

There is slow, and then there is Jerry slow. Complex, deep and haunting. Some of my favorites: China Doll, Stella Blue, He's Gone, as geez there's too many. Summer '89 was just too good as well. Such thick and polished sound.

This is something I’ve believed a long time and what lured my interest in contrast to all the punk rock noise I was making when I first learned to play. My Deadhead friends were like “Watch that SPEED there, Casey Jones.
I’m so thankful for people who recognized I was self destructing back then and had the patience to give me space to slow down and breathe a bit, plus the psychedelics saved my life from ruminating over past trauma.

I agree with that song. Jamal will love Jerry double live from 91. Has all of that. I saw the Sunday Gospel Revival at Del Fest and Dre Anders and many many guests on stage Kentucky thunder , Gibson Bros , Traveling McCourys , Del, , and everyone else singing eventually got on stage and sang My Brothers and Sisters”it was beautiful. Definitely inspirational and healing happy. I don’t think he’s ready for Don’t Let go yet. But getting there. The frustrating thing about this is Jamal not letting the show just play .. sounds like

I read an interview once where Jerry described it like this...later years everything was more consistently better. The highs weren't as high and the lows weren't as low

Yup, I was there! ‘89-‘92 Jerry was on fire!🎸💥 So many great Foxboro memories- The Dead 3 times, once w Dylan, Pink Floyd, The Who. Worst stadium seats ever, but what a great venue anyway. Adam Vinatieri closed it with style!

I've never head this version of He's Gone before and it's immediately become my favorite version so far. Brent and Bobby at the end with the backup vocals were so great!

Nothing left to do, but smile, smile, smile. Whatcha gonna do. The Dead for all their success never were driven by money. In fact they were very generous. I suggest Jamel, watching the Amazon Prime docu-series, Long Strange Trip. It will help in understanding the different songs and the context, as they would sing about what was happening in their lives. Couple that with all the LSD experimentation and you have some very interesting stories but to song. Life lessons get passed on. Like I have said in the comments in the past....in many ways it was like Church. And sometimes it felt like they were singing directly to you. It gets kinda deep. Appreciate your keeping the music alive and hopefully expanding the fanbase. Peace.
Try listening to Bjork, a couple song suggestions: Cocoon, Joga, undo, declare independence, earth intruders....you’ll be glad ya did. Very experimental trip hop, avant-garde, electronic craziness. Enjoy

Jamel, Lenny was Mickey's (one of the drummers) dad. Mickey left the band for a few years after this happened, but ended up coming back in 1974? It was obviously a painful thing that happened, and awesome when Mickey was brought back, because he was part of the band and it wasn't his fault.
One of the official Grateful Dead symbols is Steal Your Face, the lightning bolt skull which was the cover art of the album by the same name. The one on your hat is called the Space Your Face. I met the guy who designed that sometime in 89 or 90 in either Nassau or Albany (Knickerbocker Arena). He got busted selling that on t-shirts at shows for copyright infringement and then Jerry saw the shirts, had the charges dropped and pulled him out of jail and bought the image from him for the wonderful price of tickets for life.
A few thoughts. First, note that "nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile" is probably the most iconic Dead lyric. Garcia was noted for making eye contact and smiling with people near the stage, and this line always brought a huge round of applause.
Second, it is a Robert Hunter song. I didn't literally interpret it the way you did, but the thing to note is this: You're not quite sure exactly what he is talking about, but you know exactly what he means.
Third, and this is a major LOL moment - when they start the vocal jam, and you, Jamal, say "do it one more time." All the Dead Heads are laughing, because they know the are going to do not just one more time, but for 3 or 4 minutes.
Keep up the good work. You want a reaction, listen to the original Live/Dead recording of St. Stephen - the opening guitar work ....!!!! I remember the first time I heard this - play it loud - you will have a REACTION!

John K was excellent-- I used to follow his old band, Hairball Willie about 30 years ago--- grate originals, and their Dead covers were fantastic. John would play US Blues with an electric fiddle with a wah pedal, it was awesome!!
I’m a 46 yr old deadhead.. saw them play about 25 times in my teens and early 20s. That was so much fun to watch someone listen to this for the first time. I just lost a very close mentor and friend on February 26th. I remember before heading to bootcamp I shared this song the day I had to leave. I'm 3 weeks from going home and he passed away so this song is getting me through this grieving period. The grateful dead is truly a band to get you through the tough times

Regarding the fate of Lenny Hart, he was located by a private detective and arrested in San Diego on July 26, 1971, while baptizing people and using the name "Rev. Lenny B. Hart". He was convicted of criminal embezzlement and sentenced to six months in jail. Lenny Hart died of natural causes on February 2, 1975. He had been teaching music in Mill Valley since his release from prison. According to Dennis McNally, "Mickey went to the funeral home, cleared the room, took out the snakewood sticks that had been his inheritance, played a traditional rudimental drum piece, "The Downfall of Paris" on Lenny's coffin, and split."
